The question of what happens when you miss a connection

Mme Dubois : Bonjour monsieur.
Mme Dubois : Alors, voyons voir…
Mme Dubois : Une heure environ.

The situation takes place at Gare de Lyon in Paris. Thomas, a 22-year-old student, has just missed his TGV to Lyon because of traffic jams. He heads to the ticket counter where Madame Dubois works, an experienced SNCF employee, to find out what his options are and to buy another ticket.
DIALOGUE
Thomas : Hello madam, uh… I have a big problem. I just missed my 2:30 PM TGV to Lyon because of massive traffic jams on the ring road!
Mme Dubois : Hello, sir. Ah, Paris traffic jams… that’s a classic! Do you have your ticket with you?
Thomas : Yes, here it is. It was a reduced-fare ticket, you know, for young people. What can I do now?
Mme Dubois : Let’s see… Hmm, it’s a Prem’s ticket for €35. The problem with this kind of ticket is that it can’t be exchanged or refunded.
Thomas : Oh no! Seriously? But it’s not my fault I missed the train!
Mme Dubois : I understand your frustration, but the fare conditions are clear. However, we can look at the options available to you.
Thomas : Okay, I’m listening. I really need to get to Lyon tonight for a job interview tomorrow morning.
Mme Dubois : Ah, that’s important then! Well, you have several options. There’s a TGV at 16:15, but you’ll have to buy a full-fare ticket.
Thomas : How much does it cost exactly?
Mme Dubois : Uh… for the 16:15 train, it’s €89 in second class. There are still seats available.
Thomas : Ouch! That’s twice what I paid! Don’t you have anything cheaper?
Mme Dubois : Well, yes, there’s also the Intercités train at 17:45, much cheaper: only €25.
Thomas : That’s better! But what time does it arrive in Lyon?
Mme Dubois : So… it arrives at 22:30. It’s longer, isn’t it, but it’s economical.
Thomas : Hmm, 22:30… It’s a bit tight for tonight, but oh well. Are there any seats left?
Mme Dubois : Wait, I’m checking… Oh, there’s a small problem. This train is delayed today because of track work.
Thomas : Oh no! How long is the delay?
Mme Dubois : About an hour. So expected arrival around 23:30. Is that still OK for you?
Thomas : Pfff… it’s really not my day! Well, the 16:15 TGV, is it on time at least?
Mme Dubois : Yes, that one is no problem. Departure and arrival on time. You would arrive at Lyon-Part-Dieu at 18:25.
Thomas : Listen, it’s expensive but I have no choice with this interview. I’ll take the 16:15 TGV. 89 euros, is that right?
Mme Dubois : Exactly. Card or cash?
Thomas : Card, please. Uh… by the way, if I miss that one too, what happens?
Mme Dubois : Well, it’ll be the same problem! Full-fare tickets can be exchanged, but with a 10-euro fee.
Thomas : All right, noted. And to avoid that, how far in advance do you recommend I arrive?
Mme Dubois : For a TGV, at least 20 minutes before departure. But honestly, with the checks and everything, I’d say more like 30 minutes.
Thomas : OK, so I need to be there by 15:45 at the latest. Which platform is it?
Mme Dubois : Here is your ticket. It’s on track M, platform 23. Do you have a map of the station?
Thomas : Uh, no, I’m not very familiar with this station. Is it far from here?
Mme Dubois : No, no, it’s straight ahead, then turn left after the shops. You’ll see the illuminated signs showing the destinations.
Thomas : Perfect. And if I get lost, are there staff I can ask for directions?
Mme Dubois : Of course! Or you can use the SNCF Connect app, it shows the way to the platform.
Thomas : Great! Well, I hope everything goes well this time. Thank you very much for your help!
Mme Dubois : You’re welcome, it’s nothing! Have a good trip and good luck with your interview!
Thomas : Thank you! Goodbye!
Mme Dubois : Goodbye sir, and make sure you leave on time this time!
