Summary of the month: what was good, what to change in time organization

Marc : Tu as raison.
Marc : Mais on oublie souvent !
Marc : Ah ben tiens, parlant d’Emma…
On a dépassé !
Marc : Aïe ! De combien ?
Sophie : Environ 200 euros…
Sophie : Alors, si on résume…

English translation

It’s the end of November. Sophie and Marc, a married couple with two teenage children (Emma, 16, and Lucas, 14), are quietly sitting together in the living room after dinner to take stock of the past month. They want to reflect together on what worked well in their family organization and on possible improvements for December.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Well, the kids are in their rooms… We can finally catch our breath a bit! You know, I’d like us to take stock of this month. I feel like we’ve been running around non-stop.
Marc : Oh yes, good idea! It’s true that November has been pretty intense. Between Emma’s tests, Lucas’s football practices and our respective jobs… Phew!
Sophie : Exactly! Okay, let’s start with the positives. What did you like this month about our organization?
Marc : Uh… well, I think the Sunday game nights were great! We managed to keep them almost every Sunday.
Sophie : That’s true! The kids loved it too. And the shared schedule on the fridge is actually working pretty well.
Marc : Oh yes! Even though I was skeptical at first… But now I always check it before making any plans.
Sophie : And the Saturday morning click-and-collect grocery pickups save us so much time! No more wandering the aisles with the list that keeps getting longer.
Marc : Speaking of groceries… Do you remember that Saturday when I forgot to place the order? We ended up with nothing for lunch!
Sophie : Oh darn, yes! Luckily we still had some pasta… Actually, that’s something we should work on. Maybe we should get better organized for grocery shopping.
Marc : You’re right. And I think we should also rethink the routes. This week I had to make three round trips to Lucas’s middle school because he’d forgotten his things!
Sophie : Oh dear, don’t even mention it! And how many times have I rushed to drop Emma off at her piano lessons? Maybe we could organize a carpool with the other parents?
Marc : Good idea! By the way, the Durands suggested arranging carpooling for soccer practice. Their son Alex is on the same team as Lucas.
Sophie : Great! That would free up some time for us. Okay, and as for meals, what do you think?
Marc : Uh… honestly? I think we eat the same things far too often. And on some evenings it’s really a rush to prepare dinner.
Sophie : I agree. Weekend batch cooking works when you stick to it, but…
Marc : But we often forget! And when we get home late at night, well… it’s pasta or pizza!
Sophie : Exactly! And the kids are starting to complain. Emma pointed it out to me again yesterday: “Mom, can we have something other than pasta?”
Marc : Oh, speaking of Emma… We need to talk about her behavior this month. She’s been rather difficult, hasn’t she?
Sophie : Oh yes! Especially that thing about going to Léa’s… Do you remember? She’d told us it was just a snack, but it turned out to be a party!
Marc : Luckily Léa’s mother called me! But, well, it’s that age too… We need to find a balance between trusting her and staying vigilant.
Sophie : Yes, and Lucas too – he’s starting to grumble about his homework. We always have to be on his case.
Marc : That’s true. Maybe we should set up a proper “homework” slot for everyone? Like from 6 to 7 p.m., everyone gets to it?
Sophie : Not a bad idea! And we could use that time to prepare dinner together. It would also give us some time as a couple.
Marc : Ah yes, that’s important! We haven’t taken much time for ourselves this month… When was our last date night again?
Sophie : Uh… well… early October, I think? With the movies and the restaurant… It’s been a long time, hasn’t it!
Marc : Far too long! We absolutely have to schedule something for December. And make it a regular thing, not just once!
Sophie : Okay! Once a week would be nice. Even if it’s just a walk or a drink on the terrace.
Marc : Perfect! So, budget-wise, how are we doing this month?
Sophie : Well… it’s not great! Between winter clothes for the kids who are growing, extracurricular activities and our impromptu outings… We’ve gone over budget!
Marc : Ouch! By how much?
Sophie : About €200… Mostly because of that washing machine breakdown, actually.
Marc : Oh right, that’s true! Okay, for December we’ll be more careful then. And let’s try to get a head start on the Christmas gifts.
Sophie : Excellent idea! We could even make a list with a maximum budget per person?
Marc : Yes! And involve the kids too. So they understand there are limits.
Sophie : So, to sum up… In December: carpooling with the Durands, a “homework” schedule from 6pm to 7pm, one evening per week as a couple, a controlled Christmas budget and…
Marc : And batch-cooking on Sunday afternoons! No more excuses for pasta every night!
Sophie : Perfect! You know what? I already feel more organized just talking about it!
Marc : Me too! Come on, shall we have a cup of tea to celebrate our resolutions?
Sophie : With pleasure! And tomorrow we’ll put all that neatly into the family schedule!
