Summary: is this club “my place”

Thomas : Ça, ça me plairait !
Thomas : Il a dit ça ? Quel culot !
Thomas : Et moi alors ? Tu me conseilles de venir ou pas ?
Sophie : Franchement ?
Bon, on commande ?

Sophie : Hi Thomas! Sorry I’m late, the photo club meeting ran over.
Thomas : No problem! So, how did it go this time? You seemed pretty enthusiastic last week.
Sophie : Uh… well, actually, it’s complicated. I have mixed feelings, you know.
Thomas : Oh really? Tell me everything! I was thinking of signing up too…
Sophie : So, on the positive side, the photo outings are really nice. Last week we went to the Saint-Ouen flea market; it was great for street portraits.
Thomas : That sounds great to me! And the overall atmosphere?
Sophie : Well… that’s where it gets complicated. Two groups have formed and frankly, the atmosphere is sometimes tense.
Thomas : What do you mean? Cliques?
Sophie : Exactly! On one side, there are the “purists” led by Jean-Claude, a 60-year-old guy who swears by film and black-and-white photography.
Thomas : And the other?
Sophie : The “modernists” with Camille, a really nice girl our age who’s totally into digital, Instagram, all that. The thing is, they can’t stand each other.
Thomas : Darn! And you, where do you stand in all of this?
Sophie : That’s the problem! I like both approaches. Jean-Claude taught me some extraordinary things about composition, but Camille has mastered astonishing retouching techniques.
Thomas : Hm, that could be enriching, couldn’t it? To have both points of view?
Sophie : Yeah, except today it really got out of hand. Jean-Claude flat-out said that what Camille and I were doing “wasn’t real photography.”
Thomas : He said that? What nerve!
Sophie : Wait, it’s not over! Camille shot back that his photos were “old-fashioned” and that he had to “evolve with the times”.
Thomas : Ouch… And the other members, how did they react?
Sophie : Most stayed silent, uncomfortable. I was really embarrassed. That’s not at all the kind of atmosphere I was looking for in a club.
Thomas : I understand… But you told me the president was cool, didn’t you?
Sophie : Martine? Yes, she’s lovely, but she’s 75 and she doesn’t really dare to rein people in. She tries to keep everyone happy.
Thomas : And on the technical side, are you at least learning anything?
Sophie : Oh, that’s undeniable! Jean-Claude really knows his stuff, even if his teaching leaves something to be desired. And Camille showed me software I wasn’t familiar with.
Thomas : Well, there are pros and cons then. What are you going to do?
Sophie : Well, I think I’ll give the club another month or two. Maybe the tensions will ease.
Thomas : Or maybe you could act as a mediator? Reconcile the two groups?
Sophie : Huh? Me? Are you kidding! I’ve just arrived – I’m not going to get involved in their affairs.
Thomas : Uh… yes, exactly! Sometimes an outside perspective helps. You could suggest projects that combine the two approaches.
Sophie : Hey, that’s not a bad idea! Like an exhibition with analog prints and digital creations?
Thomas : Exactly! It could show that the two can coexist.
Sophie : Mm… I’d need to be sure it’s really my thing before I get that involved.
Thomas : And by the way, are there any other clubs around here?
Sophie : I checked. There’s a younger club in Belleville, but they only do street art and urban photography. It’s a bit restrictive.
Thomas : And what about the photo-hiking club you told me about?
Sophie : Oh yes! I had completely forgotten. They organize nature outings every weekend. That could be nice, especially with the nicer weather coming.
Thomas : There you go! And besides, nothing’s stopping you from doing both for a while, just to see.
Sophie : That’s true… Alright, I’ll give it a try for a few more sessions. In the worst case, I’ll have learned a few things and met some people.
Thomas : What about me then? Do you think I should come or not?
Sophie : Honestly? If you can handle the drama and you’re really motivated to learn, go for it. But if you’re just looking for a relaxed hangout with friends, run!
Thomas : Thanks for your honesty! I might instead look into the chess club after all…
Sophie : Well, at least the pawns don’t argue with each other! So, shall we order? All this excitement has worked up an appetite!
Thomas : Come on, let’s go! And keep me posted about the rest of your photographic adventures!
