Michel: Exactement. Donc on va faire un planning fixe. Hugo, tu peux t’occuper du mardi ?
Hugo: Hein ? Mais pourquoi toujours moi ? Léa peut très bien le faire aussi !
Léa: N’importe quoi ! Toi tu as juste la flemme de te lever tôt !
Claire: Les enfants, calmez-vous. On va partager équitablement.
Léa: Ça me va !
Michel: Zut, j’allais oublier !
Hugo: Promis papa ! Cette fois-ci, les voisins pourront pas râler !
English translation
In a family home, it’s Sunday evening and the Dubois family gathers in the living room to organize the household chores for the week. The parents, Claire and Michel, want to set up a fair schedule with their two teenage children, Hugo (16) and Léa (14), regarding who should take out the trash and when.
DIALOGUE
Claire: Okay, kids, sit down. We need to talk about organizing the house this week.
Hugo: Oh no, not another family meeting! Can’t we just watch Netflix in peace?
Michel: Hugo, it’ll only take ten minutes. The problem is that this week nobody took out the trash on time.
Léa: I took out the trash on Tuesday! It was my turn!
Hugo: Uh… well, I had football practice on Wednesday, I completely forgot.
Claire: Exactly, that’s why we need to be better organized. The garbage collectors come very early on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Léa: Yeah, and last week the neighbors complained because our trash can was still full on the sidewalk!
Michel: Exactly. So we’ll set up a fixed schedule. Hugo, can you take care of Tuesday?
Hugo: Huh? Why is it always me? Léa can do it just as well!
Léa: Come on! You’re just too lazy to get up early!
Claire: Kids, calm down. We’re going to split it fairly. Hugo on Tuesday, Léa on Friday. Is that OK with you?
Hugo: Yeah… but if I have a test on Wednesday, I have to study late on Tuesday night. How am I supposed to get up at 7 a.m.?
Michel: You have to put the trash out the night before, not the same morning! The garbage collectors come around 7:30 a.m.
Léa: Oh really? I thought you had to put them out in the morning!
Claire: No, sweetheart, it’s Monday night and Thursday night that you have to put them out.
Hugo: Wait, I’m lost here… What exactly do we have to do?
Michel: Okay, let’s start from the beginning. There are three bins: the green one for glass, the yellow one for recycling, and the grey one for the rest.
Léa: Yes, I know that. But which one do we put out when?
Claire: The grey bin and the yellow one every week. The green one only once a month.
Hugo: Oh, I didn’t know about the green one! And it’s heavy on top of that!
Léa: Okay then, I’ll take Monday nights and you take Thursday nights?
Hugo: Uh, wait… On Mondays I often have football late, I come home exhausted…
Michel: Hugo, stop making excuses! You can easily do it when you get home.
Claire: Or we could do it differently. What if we alternated every week? One week it’s Hugo who takes care of everything, the next it’s Léa?
Léa: That works for me! It’s simpler that way.
Hugo: Yeah, not a bad idea. But what if I’m away for the weekend at Grandma and Grandpa’s?
Claire: In that case, you’ll let Léa know in advance and she’ll take over.
Léa: Okay, but same for me if I have a sleepover at Chloé’s!
Michel: Very well. And what about the green bin this month-how do we handle it?
Hugo: Well, we can do it together, can’t we? It’s really heavy with all the bottles!
Léa: Good idea! We’ll take it out together on the first Monday of the month.
Claire: Perfect! And what if someone forgets twice in a row?
Hugo: Does he do the dishes for a week?
Léa: Or he takes out all the bins the following month!
Michel: Shoot, I almost forgot! This week is special – it’s Easter Monday. The garbage collectors will come a day later.
Claire: Oh right, that’s true! So Tuesday evening and Friday evening instead of Monday and Thursday.
Hugo: Alright then, I’ll start this week. I’ll take everything out on Tuesday evening.
Léa: Cool! I’ll take it next week. By the way, should we put the schedule on the fridge?
Claire: Excellent idea! That way everyone can check.
Michel: Alright, that’s settled! Can we watch the movie now?
Hugo: Great! But first, I’ll jot that down in my phone so I don’t forget.
Léa: Me too! And I’ll set an alarm to remind me.
Claire: Very well organized, my children! I’m proud of you.
Michel: Come on, now to the living room! And Hugo, don’t forget: tomorrow evening, first mission!
Hugo: I promise, Dad! This time the neighbors won’t be able to complain!
