Problems with class schedule – changing groups

DIALOGUE

Mme Bertrand : Bonjour Julie ! Ça va ? Je vous écoute.
Julie : Bonjour Madame Bertrand.
Julie : Ça me tente bien !
Mme Bertrand : Ah oui, Sophie !
Julie : Oh, ça me fait super plaisir !
Thomas : Julie comment ?
Julie : *chuchote* Moreau ! Julie Moreau !
Mme Bertrand : Julie Moreau. Tu la connais peut-être ?
Thomas : Moreau… Moreau…
Ah bon ? … D’accord, parfait ! Merci Thomas ! *raccroche*
Julie : Alors ? Qu’est-ce qu’il a dit ?
Mme Bertrand : Bonne nouvelle !
Julie : Promis ! À bientôt et encore merci !

Julie, a second-year undergraduate student, goes to the cultural activities office at her university. She wants to speak with Ms. Bertrand, the coordinator, because she has scheduling problems with her theatre class, which conflicts with her new required courses.

DIALOGUE

Ms. Bertrand: Hello Julie! How are you? I’m listening.
Julie : Hello Ms. Bertrand. Uh… well, I have a small problem with my Tuesday evening theatre class.
Ms. Bertrand: Oh? What’s going on?
Julie : Well, this year I changed my major and now I have mandatory tutorials on Tuesdays until 7:30 p.m. So it’s impossible to get to the theatre workshop by 7:45 p.m.
Ms. Bertrand: Oh no! That’s annoying… Can’t you negotiate with your professor to leave a little earlier?
Julie : I’ve tried, but he refuses outright. He says the tutorials are already short enough as they are.
Ms. Bertrand: Hm, I understand. Well, let’s look together to see if there are any other possible time slots. When are you available?
Julie : Well, I’m free on Monday evenings, on Wednesdays after 5 p.m., and on Friday afternoons.
Ms. Bertrand : Perfect! Well, I actually have a theatre group on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s with Thomas Dubois, do you know him?
Julie : Uh… no, not really. What is he like as a teacher?
Ms. Bertrand : Oh, that’s wonderful! Very energetic, lots of humour. He mainly works on improvisation and contemporary theatre.
Julie : That sounds great! Is there still room in that group?
Ms. Bertrand: Wait, I’ll check… *checks her computer* So… Monday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m… Ah, darn!
Julie : What’s the matter?
Ms. Bertrand : That group is full, unfortunately. There’s already a waiting list of five people.
Julie : Oh no… What about the other time slots?
Ms. Bertrand : On Wednesdays, I have a workshop at 5:30 p.m., but it’s classical theatre, more focused on Molière and Racine.
Julie : Hm, classical theatre isn’t really my thing… I prefer modern theatre, you know.
Ms. Bertrand : I understand. Wait… *thinks* Oh! What if I contacted Thomas to see if he could, as an exception, take one more student?
Julie : Would you do that? That would be great!
Ms. Bertrand : Of course! How long have you been registered?
Julie : I’ve been doing theatre here for two years. Last year I was with Sophie Martin.
Ms. Bertrand : Oh yes, Sophie! She spoke very highly of you, actually. That could play in your favor.
Julie : Really? What did she say?
Ms. Bertrand : That you were very dedicated, always punctual, and that you had real potential for acting.
Julie : Oh, that makes me so happy! Sophie was such a great teacher.
Ms. Bertrand : All right, I’ll call him right away, Thomas. *dials the number* Hello Thomas? It’s Corinne… Yes, I’m fine, and you? Listen, I have a student here…
Thomas : *on the phone* Ah, is it for the Monday group? I told you it was full, didn’t I!
Ms. Bertrand : Yes, I know, but it’s a special case. Julie was with Sophie last year, a very good student…
Thomas : Julie, what?
Julie : *whispers* Moreau! Julie Moreau!
Ms. Bertrand : Julie Moreau. You might know her?
Thomas : Wait, isn’t she the little blonde who performed in “No Exit” last year?
Julie : *surprised* Ah! Was he in the audience?
Ms. Bertrand : He’s asking if you were the one who performed in “No Exit”?
Julie : Yes, that’s me! I was Inès.
Ms. Bertrand : *on the phone* Yes, that’s her… Oh really? … Okay, perfect! Thank you, Thomas! *hangs up*
Julie : So? What did he say?
Ms. Bertrand : Good news! He remembers your performance and he agrees to make an exception.
Julie : No kidding? That’s fantastic! Thank you so much!
Ms. Bertrand : There’s just one small condition…
Julie : Which one?
Ms. Bertrand : You’ll need to arrive a little early for the first sessions to catch up on what they’ve already done.
Julie : No problem! I can come as early as 5:30 PM if needed.
Ms. Bertrand : Perfect! I’ll sign you up for Monday 6:00-8:00 PM with Thomas Dubois. It starts next Monday.
Julie : Great! You’re saving my life! How can I thank you?
Ms. Bertrand : By being as wonderful a student as you were last year! Go on, and have fun!
Julie : Promise! See you soon and thanks again!
