Problem with a failed payment – what to do?

Marie: Une puce, pourquoi ?
Ahmed: Parfait.
Marie: Ben oui ! 2-5-8… euh…
On va essayer autrement.
Ah oui ! Je l’avais pas vu… Merci pour le tuyau !
Ahmed: Pas de quoi ! Bon voyage, madame !
Marie: Merci encore ! Vous m’avez sauvé la journée ! Au revoir !

Marie: Oh come on! This machine isn’t working! *[taps nervously on the screen]*
Ahmed: Excuse me, ma’am, are you having a problem with the ticket machine?
Marie: Ah yes! My card won’t go through… I’ve already tried three times! It says “payment refused” every time.
Ahmed: I see… I’m an RATP employee. May I take a look? Which card are you using?
Marie: Um, my Visa card. It usually works everywhere! Well, I think…
Ahmed: Okay, so… does your card have a chip or just a magnetic stripe?
Marie: A chip? Why?
Ahmed: Perfect. The problem might be that you’re not inserting the card far enough into the reader.
Marie: Oh really? I just put it like this… *[mimes the gesture]*
Ahmed: No no, look. You have to push it all the way in, right to the end, and wait for the little “beep”.
Marie: Okay… *[tries again]* Oh no! Declined again! This can’t be happening!
Ahmed: Wait… Your PIN, are you sure it’s correct?
Marie: Yeah, of course! 2-5-8… uh… Hmm, now I’m not so sure…
Ahmed: It happens! Want to try again? But be careful – after three failed attempts, the card may be blocked.
Marie: Blocked? Oh no, not today! I have an appointment in the 16th arrondissement in an hour!
Ahmed: Okay, listen. Let’s try another way. Do you perhaps have another card? Or any cash?
Marie: Yes, I have my credit card… But for cash, uh… *[rummages through her wallet]* I only have 3 euros in coins.
Ahmed: Okay, try your credit card. But first, I’ll restart the machine – that sometimes fixes the problem.
Marie: Can you do that?
Ahmed: Yeah, we’ve got a special key. *[manipulates the machine]* There we go… Now try your first card again, but slowly.
Marie: Okay… *[tries again cautiously]* Oh! It’s working! “Select your ticket”… Great!
Ahmed: Perfect! So, what would you like to buy?
Marie: A booklet of 10 tickets, please… uh, well, I mean… *[laughs]* What do I do now?
Ahmed: *[smiling]* Press “T+ booklet”, then “Confirm”.
Marie: “T+ booklet, Confirm”… There! €16.90… That’s expensive, though!
Ahmed: Yeah, prices went up again last month. But it’s still cheaper than buying single tickets.
Marie: That’s true… *[the machine makes a noise]* Oh, what’s happening? The screen’s gone black!
Ahmed: Oh no! The machine just crashed! But your payment should have gone through…
Marie: What do you mean, “normally”? And my tickets then? And my €16.90?
Ahmed: Calm down, ma’am. Look, has your card already been charged?
Marie: Uh… on the machine’s screen, it said “payment accepted” before it crashed.
Ahmed: Okay. In that case, your tickets might be stuck in the machine. I’ll open the compartment.
Marie: Are you sure? I don’t want to have any problems…
Ahmed: No problem, I’m authorized. *[opens a panel]* Ah! Your tickets are here! The machine didn’t eject them.
Marie: Oh, thank goodness! Thank you so much! I wouldn’t have known what to do without you!
Ahmed: You’re welcome! It happens more often than you’d think. Next time, if it happens again, go straight to the ticket counter or call the number on the machine.
Marie: There’s a number? Oh yeah! I hadn’t seen it… Thanks for the tip!
Ahmed: You’re welcome! Have a good trip, ma’am!
Marie: Thank you again! You’ve saved my day! Goodbye!
