Polite refusal to add a new person with an explanation

Julien: Ah bon ?
Julien: Une autre fois ?
Julien: *souriant* Ça me va ! Bon, je vais vous laisser alors. Profitez bien de votre soirée !
Thomas: Merci !
Bon, on y va ? Marie nous attend.
Camille: Allez-y !

Camille: Oh, Thomas! You’re already here. Sorry I’m late, I had a class that just wouldn’t end.
Thomas: No problem! I went ahead and ordered. A coffee for you?
Camille: Perfect, thanks. So, are you still up for tonight at Marie and Paul’s?
Thomas: Of course! It’ll be nice to see the whole gang again. By the way, how many of us will there be in the end?
Camille: Uh… I’d say about ten. The usuals, you know: us, Marie, Paul, Sophie, Antoine…
Julien: Hi Camille! How are you?
Camille: Oh, hi Julien! Yes, I’m fine, and you? Thomas, this is Julien, we’re in the same contemporary literature class.
Thomas: Nice to meet you, I’m Thomas.
Julien: Likewise! You look like you’re having a good time. What are you doing tonight?
Camille: Uh… well, we’re going to some friends’ place for a quiet little get-together.
Julien: Oh great! I haven’t partied in a long time. Is it open or is it private?
Thomas: *looks at Camille with a questioning expression*
Camille: Uh… *hesitates* I mean… it’s more of a get-together among close friends, you know…
Julien: Oh really? But we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well by now, haven’t we? We’ve been working together since the start of the semester.
Camille: Yes, of course… but this one is kind of special, actually.
Thomas: *looks uncomfortable* Maybe another time…
Julien: Another time? But what’s so special about tonight, then?
Camille: *sighs* Listen, Julien, I don’t want to be unpleasant, but it’s the anniversary of Marie’s breakup with her ex…
Thomas: Exactly, she needs to be surrounded by her closest friends.
Julien: Ah… I see. But maybe I could help her forget, couldn’t I? I can be good company!
Camille: I’m sure of that, but you understand… Marie only feels comfortable with us right now.
Thomas: She’s going through a difficult time, you know.
Julien: *a little hurt* Yeah… Well, I understand. I think.
Camille: Please don’t take it personally. It’s really not about you.
Thomas: Absolutely! Under different circumstances, I would have been happy to.
Julien: Hm… What if I brought something? Some wine, some cakes?
Camille: *embarrassed* Julien… really, that’s kind, but…
Thomas: The problem is that Marie expressly asked that it be just the usual group.
Julien: *insists* But she doesn’t even know me! How can she know if it would bother her?
Camille: Exactly! That’s the problem. She doesn’t want to meet new people right now.
Thomas: You know how it is, matters of the heart…
Julien: *disappointed* Well… all right. I guess I don’t have a choice.
Camille: Listen, what if we planned something for next week? A movie or dinner?
Thomas: Excellent idea! That way we can really talk and get to know each other.
Julien: *softens* Ah… that would actually be nice.
Camille: Perfect! I’ll message you this week so we can make plans?
Julien: Alright. Sorry for insisting, you know. I’m not used to…
Thomas: Don’t apologize! It’s normal to want to go out and meet people.
Camille: Exactly! And now that Thomas and I know you better, we can include you in our upcoming outings.
Julien: *smiling* That works for me! Well, I’ll leave you then. Enjoy your evening!
Thomas: Thanks! And I hope to see you soon.
Camille: See you soon, Julien! I’ll call you this week, promise.
Julien: *walking away* Perfect! Have a good evening, friends!
Thomas: *relieved* Phew… that was a bit awkward.
Camille: You bet! But I think he got it. And anyway, we’re really going to set something up with him.
Thomas: Of course! He seems nice after all. So, shall we go? Marie’s waiting for us.
Camille: Go on! I hope she’s feeling better tonight…
