Discussion with a family mediator about finding a compromise

DIALOGUE

Mme Dubois : Bonjour Sophie, bonjour Marc.
Sophie : N’importe quoi ! Je travaille autant que toi, hein !
Mme Dubois : Stop, stop. On va reprendre calmement.
Sophie : Ah bon ? Tu me reproches ma promotion maintenant ?
Marc : Non !
Sophie : Euh…
Marc : Ah bon ? Je savais pas que tu culpabilisais autant.
Mme Dubois : Vous voyez ? Vous commencez à mieux vous comprendre. Maintenant, parlons solutions.
Mme Dubois : Parfait !
Mme Dubois : Formidable !
Je me sens déjà mieux.
Sophie : Oui, moi aussi. J’ai bon espoir qu’on y arrive.

English translation

Sophie and Marc, a couple married for fifteen years, are going through a difficult period in their relationship. Their frequent arguments are affecting their teenage son, Théo. They have decided to consult Ms. Dubois, an experienced family mediator, to try to resolve their conflicts and find common ground before considering a separation.

DIALOGUE

Ms. Dubois : Hello Sophie, hello Marc. Please make yourselves comfortable. So, what brings you here today?
Sophie : Um… well, it’s complicated. We can’t talk anymore without it ending in an argument.
Marc : Yeah, and above all, Théo is starting to suffer. He told us he’s fed up with our shouting matches.
Ms. Dubois : I see. Théo is your son, is that right? How old is he?
Sophie : He’s fifteen. And honestly, I can see why he’s so upset. Just yesterday, Marc completely lost it over a housework issue.
Marc : Oh no, wait! You’re twisting everything! It’s not just about the housework, it’s that you never do anything at home!
Sophie : Nonsense! I work as much as you do, okay!
Ms. Dubois : Stop, stop. Let’s take things calmly. Marc, could you explain your point of view to me without accusing Sophie?
Marc : Well… um… it’s just that I feel like I’m carrying everything on my shoulders. Work, the shopping, the paperwork…
Sophie : And what about me then? Théo’s homework, his medical appointments, the laundry… You don’t see any of what I do!
Ms. Dubois : Okay, I sense there’s a problem with the division of responsibilities. But tell me, how long have you both been feeling misunderstood?
Marc : Oh… since Sophie was promoted, I’d say. It’s been… two years?
Sophie : Oh? You’re holding my promotion against me now?
Marc : No! Oh, come on, Sophie, listen to me instead of getting angry right away! It’s just that since then we’ve had less time together.
Ms. Dubois : Marc is right to point that out. Sophie, how do you feel when Marc mentions that period?
Sophie : Well… it’s true that I’m traveling more often. But I thought he was proud of me, actually.
Marc : But I’m proud! It’s just that sometimes I feel more like a roommate than a husband.
Ms. Dubois : Well, that’s interesting. Sophie, how do you take that remark?
Sophie : Uh… it hurts, to be honest. I feel lonely too, but in a different way.
Marc : Oh? What do you mean?
Sophie : Well, when I get home in the evening, you’re often grumpy. I feel like you resent me for having succeeded.
Marc : No, not at all! It’s just that… well, okay, maybe I’m a little jealous sometimes.
Ms. Dubois : Bravo, Marc – it’s brave of you to admit that. And you, Sophie, do you ever have feelings that are hard to admit?
Sophie : Mmh… yeah. Sometimes I feel guilty about not being there enough for Théo. And because of that, I get angry with Marc.
Marc : Oh? I didn’t know you felt so guilty.
Ms. Dubois : You see? You’re beginning to understand each other better. Now, let’s talk solutions. What could improve your everyday life?
Sophie : Well, for starters, we could make a schedule for the household chores, right?
Marc : Great idea! And we could block out one evening a week, just the two of us?
Sophie : Oh yes! Like before… I miss our little dinner dates, just the two of us.
Ms. Dubois : Perfect! And what about Théo? How can we involve him in this new organisation?
Marc : We should talk to him frankly, explain that we want to make things better.
Sophie : And besides, he could help us more. At fifteen, he can certainly do his own laundry!
Marc : Ah, we’re agreed on that! It’s time he took responsibility.
Ms. Dubois : Excellent. But be careful – one difficulty could arise: your personalities. Sophie, you’re a perfectionist, and Marc, you tend to put everything off, don’t you?
Sophie : Uh… it’s true that I like things to be done properly.
Marc : And I procrastinate, that’s for sure. How can we make sure we don’t fall back into our old ways?
Ms. Dubois : By being understanding of one another. Sophie, accept that Marc does things differently. Marc, follow through on your commitments, even if imperfectly.
Sophie : It’s going to take effort, but… I want to try.
Marc : Me too. Deep down, we still love each other, don’t we, Sophie?
Sophie : Well, of course, you idiot! Otherwise we wouldn’t be here!
Ms. Dubois : Great! We’ll draw up a short contract with realistic goals. Are you okay with meeting again in two weeks?
Marc : Absolutely! And thanks, Ms. Dubois. I feel better already.
Sophie : Yes, me too. I’m hopeful that we’ll get there.
Ms. Dubois : Right, let’s get started on saving your relationship! See you soon and good luck!
