Discussion about cleaning together with music as a family ritual

Ça me motive plus !
Claire : D’accord ma puce. Thomas, lance donc “Balance ton quoi” !

In the Moreau family’s living room on a Sunday morning, the family gathers for their weekly ritual: a big clean-up set to music. Claire, the mother, tries to organize the chores while her husband Thomas and their teenage daughter Léa negotiate their responsibilities with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

DIALOGUE

Claire : Okay then, let’s get started with our cleaning session! Thomas, can you put on the usual playlist?
Thomas : Uh, which one? Last week’s, or have you made a new one?
Claire : I put together a little mix… There’s Daft Punk, Stromae, and I added Brassens for you.
Léa : Oh no, not Brassens when I’m vacuuming! It makes me want to fall asleep!
Thomas : What? Georges Brassens makes you want to fall asleep? Come on, Léa!
Claire : Okay then, we’ll leave that for later. First, let’s divide up the chores. Léa, will you take care of your bedroom and the bathroom?
Léa : Uh… my bedroom’s fine, but the bathroom… Can’t I do the kitchen instead?
Thomas : Oh no! I was planning to do the cooking while listening to my old rock records!
Claire : Thomas, you’ll vacuum the living room and our bedroom. I’ll take care of the bathroom and sorting the laundry.
Léa : Mom, can we start with some Angèle? It motivates me more!
Claire : Okay, honey. Thomas, go ahead and play “Balance ton quoi”!
Thomas : Ah, that’s music that gets you moving! Here we go!
Léa : Great! So, what should I start with in my bedroom?
Claire : Tidy up your desk first, then make your bed, and then vacuum.
Thomas : Oh dear… the vacuum cleaner has a problem, it’s making a strange noise!
Claire : Darn! What’s going on now?
Thomas : Well, it’s not picking up very well anymore and there’s a smell… uh… not great.
Léa : Yuck! Dad, when was the last time you changed the bag?
Thomas : The bag? Uh… do I need to change the bag?
Claire : Thomas! I’ve been telling you for months to check! So, do we have any spare bags?
Léa : I saw some in the hall closet last week.
Claire : Perfect. In the meantime, Thomas, can you dust the furniture?
Thomas : Okay, but I’m turning the volume up then! This Stromae song totally rocks!
Léa : Dad, not so loud! The neighbors are going to complain again like last time…
Claire : That’s true, we had a little visit from Mrs. Dubois, didn’t we!
Thomas : Oh yeah… “Excuse me, but your music…” So what? We’re cleaning, we’re allowed to have fun!
Léa : Okay, I’m done with my room! Can I take a break?
Claire : Already? Are you sure you’ve done everything?
Léa : Well… I’ve tidied up, made the bed… As for the vacuum, I’m waiting for Dad to fix ours!
Thomas : There you go! I changed the bag. It’s working perfectly again now!
Claire : Great! Okay, Léa, can you finish your room then?
Léa : Alright… fine. But can we play some Kendji Girac afterwards?
Thomas : Oh no, not him! Can’t we stick with French rock? Some Téléphone?
Claire : Kids, let’s compromise: each of you picks two songs, taking turns. Is that OK?
Léa : Sounds good! I’ll pick Kendji and… uh… Soprano !
Thomas : Well… for me it’ll be Téléphone and… hmm, a bit of Indochine!
Claire : Perfect! I’ll go with Angèle and… Zaz! Come on, get to work, artists!
Léa : By the way, Mom, are you cooking tonight or are we ordering pizzas?
Claire : After all that cleaning? Well… why not some pizzas! What do you think?
Thomas : Excellent idea! We’ll have earned ourselves a nice little break from cooking!
Léa : Great! Well then… let’s get to work! The sooner we finish, the sooner we can relax!
Claire : That’s the spirit! Come on, all together: “One, two, three… clean-up!”
Thomas and Léa : “One, two, three… clean-up!”
