Dialogue at the lost and found office at the station

Mme Dubois : Bon, alors…

English translation

The situation takes place at the lost and found office of Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris. Mrs. Dubois, an employee of the office, welcomes Mr. Martin, who has come to retrieve his backpack that he forgot on the train the day before. A small complication will arise during the verification of the owner’s identity.
DIALOGUE
Mrs Dubois : Good morning, sir. What can I do for you today?
Mr Martin : Hello madam. Um… I hope you can help me. I lost my backpack yesterday on the Paris-Lyon train.
Mrs Dubois : Ah, very good. You’re in luck – we received several bags last night. Could you describe your bag for me, please?
Mr Martin : Well, it’s a black backpack, quite large, from the brand Decathlon. There’s a small red pocket on the side.
Mrs Dubois : Hmm, that matches a bag we do have. Which train exactly did you leave it on?
Mr Martin : It was the 18:47 TGV, coach 12, seat 45. I remember it well because I had to run to catch it!
Mrs Dubois : Perfect. And what was in your bag? It’s to verify that it’s really yours, you understand.
Mr Martin : Well… there was my sports kit, a book on the history of France, uh… my laptop, and also a packet of mint sweets.
Mrs Dubois : Hmm, that’s odd. The bag we have doesn’t contain a laptop…
Mr Martin : Oh? But that’s impossible! I’m sure of it – I had put it in the main pocket!
Mrs Dubois : Wait, let me check again… *she consults her register* Oh, sorry! I was looking at the wrong entry. There is indeed a laptop, a black Dell.
Mr Martin : Phew! You scared me! Yes, that’s exactly it, a black Dell.
Mrs Dubois : Sorry for the confusion. Right, now I need to see a piece of identification so I can return your bag.
Mr Martin : Of course, here is my ID.
Mrs Dubois : Thank you… *she examines the card* Uh, Mr Martin, there’s a small problem…
Mr Martin : Huh? What problem?
Mrs Dubois : Well, on the bag’s tag it says “P. Martinez”, not “Martin”. Are you sure this is your bag?
Mr Martin : Oh dear! Wait… Martinez is my full last name! On my official papers it’s Martin-Martinez, but everyone calls me Martin.
Mrs Dubois : Ah, I see! But on your ID it only says “Martin”…
Mr Martin : Darn! That’s true, I had my name officially shortened at the town hall two years ago. But my bag tag still had the old name!
Mrs Dubois : Hmm, that’s a bit awkward… Would you happen to have any other documents with your old name?
Mr Martin : Uh… yes! My passport! It’s still in my old name, I haven’t had it changed yet.
Mrs Dubois : Perfect! Show me that, please.
Mr Martin : Here… *he hands over his passport*
Mrs Dubois : Excellent! Pierre Martin-Martinez… Yes, that matches perfectly. Sorry for all these checks, but you can’t be too careful.
Mr Martin : I completely understand! It’s actually reassuring to see that you’re being careful.
Mrs Dubois : All right then… *she goes to fetch the bag* Here’s your backpack! Could you quickly check that everything’s there?
Mr Martin : *he opens the bag* So… the laptop, yes… the book, the sports clothes… the candy… Everything’s there! Thank you very much!
Mrs Dubois : You’re welcome! You just need to sign here for the release form.
Mr Martin : Of course! *he signs* Tell me, how long do you keep lost property?
Mrs Dubois : It depends on the item, but generally three months. After that, if no one comes to claim them, we donate them to charities.
Mr Martin : That’s an excellent initiative! Well, thanks again for everything. You’ve saved my life!
Mrs Dubois : Great! It’s nice to see people leave happy. And next time, don’t forget to check carefully before getting off the train!
Mr Martin : I promise! Have a good day, ma’am!
Mrs Dubois : You too, sir, and have a good trip!
