Dialogue after a minor conflict: will “old friendship” survive everything

DIALOGUE

Claire : Tiens, salut Thomas… Ça alors, quelle coïncidence.
Thomas : Euh… salut Claire. Oui, effectivement. Comment ça va ?
Claire : Ça va, ça va… Et toi ? Tu as l’air… ben, un peu gêné, non ?
Thomas : Tu as raison.
Thomas : Justement !
Claire : Thomas… je me sens tellement bête maintenant.
Claire : Tu as raison.
Claire : Et moi, je sais me taire ! Enfin… j’espère !
Thomas : On verra bien !

After an argument two weeks ago over a misunderstanding about a party, Claire and Thomas, friends since high school, run into each other by chance in their usual café. The atmosphere is tense, but both seem determined to clear the air and save their long-standing friendship.

DIALOGUE

Claire : Oh, hi Thomas… Well, what a coincidence.
Thomas : Uh… hi Claire. Yes, indeed. How are you?
Claire : I’m fine, I’m fine… And you? You look… well, a bit embarrassed, aren’t you?
Thomas : Embarrassed? No, why would I be embarrassed? Well, maybe a little, I admit it.
Claire : Listen, Thomas, let’s not pretend nothing happened, okay. It’s been two weeks since we last spoke.
Thomas : You’re right. That whole thing about the party at Maxime’s was really stupid.
Claire : Stupid? Thomas, you accused me of telling stuff about you! In front of everyone!
Thomas : Oh really? Me, I accused you? But Claire, you were the one who freaked out when I said that…
Claire : That I was a gossip! In front of our friends! Can you believe it?
Thomas : No, that’s not what I said! I said someone had blabbed about my problems with Sophie.
Claire : And you looked me straight in the eyes when you said it! Everyone understood that it was me!
Thomas : Uh… really? I didn’t realize. Darn…
Claire : What do you mean you didn’t realize? Thomas, we’ve known each other for fifteen years!
Thomas : Exactly! Fifteen years of friendship, Claire. Do you really think I’d think that about you?
Claire : Well… at the time, I thought so. It hurt like hell, you know.
Thomas : Oh dear… Claire, I’m sorry. Sincerely. I wasn’t referring to anyone in particular.
Claire : Oh really? Then who told you about my business? Because it’s true I did tell Léa about it…
Thomas : Léa? But Claire, Léa’s a real chatterbox! She tells everyone everything!
Claire : Huh? You think so? But she promised me she wouldn’t tell anyone…
Thomas : Poor Claire, then you don’t know her. She spilled everything to Maxime the next day.
Claire : No! Seriously? What a bitch!
Thomas : Yeah… So you see, it wasn’t you I suspected.
Claire : Thomas… I feel so stupid now. I should’ve asked you for an explanation instead of storming off in a fury.
Thomas : No, no, I should’ve been clearer. And yelling at you in front of everyone was lousy of me.
Claire : We make quite the pair, don’t we! Fifteen years of friendship and we’re arguing over a misunderstanding…
Thomas : Yeah… But by the way, are you still mad at me?
Claire : Well… a little, just for appearances! But no, I’m fine. And you?
Thomas : Me? But I never held it against you! I was just upset that you left without saying anything.
Claire : I was too angry… And I was ashamed too, because it’s true I talked about your relationship problems.
Thomas : It’s no big deal. Among friends, we confide in each other, it’s normal.
Claire : Yes, but I should’ve been more careful about who I talked to about it.
Thomas : Come on, let’s not talk about it anymore! The important thing is that we’ve cleared it up.
Claire : You’re right. Well, that’ll teach us to trust Léa!
Thomas : Ah, that’s for sure! Well, shall we have a coffee to seal the reconciliation?
Claire : With pleasure! And next time, we’ll talk directly to each other, promise?
Thomas : I promise! You don’t throw fifteen years of friendship out the window over something like that.
Claire : Exactly! Come on, tell me instead how things are going with Sophie now.
Thomas : Well… that’s another story! But at least this time I know who to turn to!
Claire : And I know how to keep quiet! Well… I hope so!
Thomas : We’ll see! Come on, cheers!
Claire : Cheers! To our old friendship that’s survived everything!
