Dialogue about the first meeting together with the children

Sophie: Zut ! Ma sauce était justement à base de tomates… Bon, on va improviser alors.
Marc: Tu as raison. À tout à l’heure, ma chérie !

DIALOGUE

Sophie: So, Marc, are you sure this is going to go well today? I admit I’m a little nervous…
Marc: Uh… well, I’m nervous too, you know. It’s the first time we’ve brought our whole little tribe together!
Sophie: Emma asked me again this morning if your boys are nice. I think she’s afraid they’ll be too rowdy for her.
Marc: Oh really? But Lucas and Tom are eager to meet her! Well, it’s true they’re… how to put it… pretty energetic, you know!
Sophie: *laughs* Energetic is an understatement! Emma is rather calm, she likes to read, draw… I hope they’ll find things in common.
Marc: Actually, Lucas loves to draw too! And Tom… uh… Tom likes everyone, don’t worry.
Sophie: By the way, what are we doing for lunch? I had planned pasta, but I’m wondering if…
Marc: Oh dear! I completely forgot to tell you! Lucas can’t stand tomatoes anymore – he’s been like that for a few months. He throws a tantrum as soon as he sees one.
Sophie: Darn! My sauce was actually tomato-based… Well, we’ll improvise then. And Tom, does he have any allergies or things like that?
Marc: No, he’ll eat anything. Even too much, actually! *laughs* But tell me, Emma, isn’t she too picky?
Sophie: Well… she’s going through a somewhat difficult phase at the moment. Since the divorce from her father, she’s sometimes… wary of the new adults in my life.
Marc: Ah… I understand. My sons also had a hard time at first. Lucas even asked me if you were going to replace his mother.
Sophie: Oh, poor thing! And what did you tell him?
Marc: No, of course not – I told him you were someone important to Dad now. Uh… I hope I did the right thing?
Sophie: Yes, that’s perfect. I told Emma that you were my boyfriend and that your children were part of your life.
Marc: Great! By the way, what time are they arriving again?
Sophie: In half an hour. My ex-husband is bringing Emma around noon, and you?
Marc: Actually… uh… a little problem. My mother was supposed to bring them to me, but she just called. She’s having car trouble.
Sophie: Oh no! So what do we do?
Marc: Well, I’ll go pick them up, but it’ll take me at least an hour round trip. I’m sorry…
Sophie: Hmm… does that mean Emma will arrive first and end up alone with us?
Marc: Uh… yes, that’s it. Do you think that’s awkward?
Sophie: Actually, that could be a good thing! That way she can get used to you at her own pace before your boys show up.
Marc: Oh, that’s true! I hadn’t thought of it that way. And besides, we’ll have time to make something other than tomato pasta!
Sophie: Exactly! How about making croque-monsieurs? All the kids like them, right?
Marc: Ah, great idea! Okay, I’m off to pick up my little monsters. See you in a bit!
Sophie: Marc, wait! You didn’t forget anything?
Marc: Uh… actually, yes?
Sophie: *smiling* A kiss, maybe?
Marc: *laughing* Oh yes! Sorry, I’m so stressed I’m losing my mind!
Sophie: Come on, go ahead! Everything’s going to be fine, I’m sure of it. We make a great team, you and me.
Marc: You’re right. See you in a bit, my darling!
