Thomas: Ben moi, ça me va !
Thomas: De toute façon, l’Angleterre, ça me botte ! On pourra visiter Londres, non ?
Thomas: En tout cas, moi ça me va !
Léa: Ouais, t’as raison.
English translation
The Dubois family gathers in the living room on a Sunday afternoon to plan their upcoming holidays. The parents, Claire and Marc, discuss with their two teenage children, Léa (16 years old) and Thomas (14 years old), plans for the approaching winter holidays and are already starting to think about the summer holidays.
DIALOGUE
Claire: Okay, kids, we need to decide about the winter holidays. They’re in three weeks!
Léa: Mom, you know I dream of going skiing! All my friends are going to Val Thorens with their families.
Thomas: Oh no, not skiing again! It’s really expensive and besides, I’m terrible on the slopes.
Marc: Uh, wait… I’ve looked at ski resort prices and frankly, it’s blowing the budget this year.
Claire: Oh, really? Is it that expensive?
Marc: Well, yes! Just renting the chalet for a week would cost us around €1,200, not to mention the lift passes…
Léa: Oh no! But Dad, couldn’t we maybe find something cheaper?
Thomas: I suggest we go to Grandma’s in Brittany. At least it’s free and the food’s great!
Léa: Thomas! We’re not going to spend our winter holidays at Grandma’s! It’s freezing cold there in February.
Claire: Well, why not? Your grandmother would be delighted to see us…
Marc: Or how about this – we could compromise. What if we went to the Vosges? It’s cheaper than the Alps.
Léa: The Vosges? Seriously, Dad? My friends are going to make fun of me!
Thomas: Well, that works for me! At least we can still go skiing, right?
Claire: Listen, Léa, we can’t afford to be show-offs this year. Our boiler gave out last month, remember?
Léa: Yeah, I know… OK, fine for the Vosges, but for summer, we’re doing something really nice!
Marc: Ah, exactly! For the summer I’ve had a brilliant idea. My colleague is suggesting that we swap houses with an English family.
Thomas: What do you mean, swap houses?
Claire: It’s a house swap, honey. They come to our place and we go to theirs. No accommodation costs!
Léa: Great! And where exactly do they live?
Marc: In Devon, near the coast. Apparently it’s beautiful and they have a large house with a garden.
Thomas: Uh… but they speak English, right? My level of English isn’t great…
Claire: Exactly! It’ll be a chance to make progress. And besides, we’ll be on our own in their house.
Léa: Wait, Dad, there’s a problem… I was planning to go to camp with Chloé this summer.
Marc: A camp? But that costs a fortune too!
Léa: Well, Chloé’s parents said they could help me pay for it…
Claire: Oh no, my daughter! We don’t accept charity. If you want to go with your friend, you’ll have to manage with your pocket money.
Thomas: Anyway, I’m really excited about England! We can visit London, can’t we?
Marc: Of course! And besides, the exchange rate is pretty favorable right now.
Léa: Well… what if I worked this summer? I could babysit or help out at Grandma’s shop?
Claire: Well, that’s a good idea! You could start taking on more responsibility.
Thomas: I want to work too! I can walk the neighborhood dogs!
Marc: Easy now, kids! Léa, you can work, but Thomas, you’re still a bit young.
Thomas: That’s not fair! Why does she get to and I don’t?
Claire: Because she’s 16, my little one. You, enjoy your vacation a little while longer.
Léa: So, it’s settled then? The Vosges in winter and England in summer?
Marc: Uh, I still need to confirm with my colleague about the house swap…
Claire: And we need to book for the Vosges quickly if we want to get something decent.
Thomas: That works for me! At least we’re going on vacation – that’s something!
Léa: Yeah, you’re right. And anyway, England could be fun. We’ll take photos for Instagram!
Claire: Perfect! So, Marc, will you take care of contacting your colleague this week?
Marc: It’s as good as done! Come on, we’re going to have a great vacation, you’ll see!
