Thomas : Tu as raison, excuse-moi.
Claire : Hm… ça me semble bizarre.
Tu as réfléchi ?
Claire : Justement !
Thomas : Elle a grandi depuis !
Thomas : D’accord, d’accord. Bon, moi je pourrais prendre août alors. Deux semaines de montagne.
Claire : Avec Sophie ?
Thomas : Euh… oui, probablement.
Thomas : Bon, bon… Et pour le jour de l’An ? Tu y as pensé ?
Claire : Hein ? Ah oui…
Thomas : Ça me va. Mais tu fais quoi ? Pas une soirée trop folle j’espère !
Claire : Thomas !
Claire : Exactement.
Thomas : Ça me paraît équitable.
English translation
Claire and Thomas have been divorced for two years and have two children: Emma (12) and Lucas (8). They meet at the café to arrange the upcoming summer holidays and the end-of-year holidays, now that Claire is living with her new partner Marc and Thomas has a new girlfriend, Sophie.
DIALOGUE
Claire : Hi Thomas! Sorry I’m late, I had trouble finding a parking spot.
Thomas : No worries. So, shall we go over the holidays and the end-of-year celebrations? The kids keep asking me what’s planned.
Claire : Yes, we need to get organized. For Christmas, I was thinking we could do the same as last year: Christmas Eve at your place, Christmas Day at mine?
Thomas : Uh… actually, it’s a bit complicated this year. Sophie would like us to spend Christmas at her parents’ in Alsace.
Claire : Oh? And what about the children? You can’t let them down at Christmas!
Thomas : But I’m not letting them down! I suggest we swap: I’ll take Christmas Eve in Alsace with them, and you can have the whole 25th with Marc.
Claire : Wait, wait… Marc has his kids too, you know. We had planned to have a big meal all together. It’s important for creating bonds.
Thomas : Well, exactly – doesn’t that work out nicely? You’ll have more time with the whole gang.
Claire : Thomas, don’t use that sarcastic tone, please. We’re trying to work things out for the sake of the children.
Thomas : You’re right, I’m sorry. So, what if we spent Christmas Eve together, the four of us, like before? I mean… without the partners.
Claire : Hm… that seems strange to me. The children might get the wrong idea, don’t you think?
Thomas : Maybe… Well, what about the summer holidays then? Have you given it any thought?
Claire : Exactly! Marc has rented a villa in Spain for three weeks in July. The children could come with us.
Thomas : A villa? Nice! But, uh… I had plans with them too. Sophie loves the mountains – we were thinking of going hiking.
Claire : Ah… And Emma, who hates walking! Do you remember our last holiday in the mountains?
Thomas : She’s grown since then! And Lucas, he loves adventure.
Claire : Yes, but… three weeks in Spain is still nicer for children, isn’t it? Beach, pool…
Thomas : Claire, let’s not argue over this. How about we split it? Two weeks each?
Claire : The problem is that Marc has already paid for everything for July… Darn, it’s complicated!
Thomas : Didn’t he think to ask us before booking?
Claire : Well… We don’t have to ask you about everything! Marc is making an effort to fit in with the family.
Thomas : All right, all right. Well, I could take August then. Two weeks in the mountains.
Claire : With Sophie?
Thomas : Uh… yes, probably. Is that a problem?
Claire : No, no… it’s just that the children don’t know her very well yet.
Thomas : Exactly – it’ll be the perfect chance! You can see that Marc, he’s the one who insists on being there.
Claire : He’s not imposing at all! The children like him a lot.
Thomas : All right, all right… And for New Year’s? Have you thought about it?
Claire : Huh? Oh yes… We could alternate with Christmas. If you take the children for Christmas, I’ll have them for New Year’s?
Thomas : That works for me. But what are you doing? I hope it’s not too wild!
Claire : Thomas! Emma is twelve, of course we’re not going to a nightclub! We’ll have a little party at home.
Thomas : With Marc’s children too?
Claire : Probably, yes. Why, does that bother you?
Thomas : No… it’s just… I’d like our children to have some time just with us too, you know?
Claire : I understand. And you, will you do the same with Sophie?
Thomas : Touché! You’re right, we’re in the same boat after all.
Claire : Exactly. Okay, so to recap: you get Christmas and I get New Year’s. For the holidays, July with me in Spain, August with you in the mountains?
Thomas : That seems fair. But we should talk to the children about it together so they fully understand.
Claire : Good idea. Shall we video-call them tonight?
Thomas : Perfect! And… Claire? Thanks for agreeing to work things out. I know it’s not always easy.
Claire : It’s not easy for us either, you know. But anyway, the important thing is that the children are happy.
Thomas : Completely agree. Right, I’m off to pick up Lucas from school. See you tonight for the call!
Claire : See you tonight! Give him a kiss for me.
