Dialogue about joint trips in a “patchwork” family

DIALOGUE

Claire : Salut Thomas, tu as une minute ?
Thomas : Tu l’as dit ! Et Lucas, il préfère quoi lui ? La mer ou la montagne ?
Claire : La mer, clairement !
Genre un long week-end ? Ça pourrait marcher !
Thomas : Ouais !
Thomas : Parfait !
Salut !

DIALOGUE

Claire : Hi Thomas, do you have a minute? We need to talk about the children’s summer holidays.
Thomas : Ah yes, hi! Uh… yes, of course. I was just about to call you about that. Sophie and I would like to take the kids to Brittany with her two daughters.
Claire : Oh really? Well, listen, that’s bad timing because Marc and I had planned to go to Brittany too… with his son Antoine.
Thomas : Huh? Seriously? We’re not going to end up on the same beach, are we!
Claire : Haha, no, just imagine! Alright, we can sort it out. When are you leaving exactly?
Thomas : Late July, from July 22 to August 5. And you?
Claire : Oh no! We’re at the beginning of August… There’ll probably be an overlap. The kids won’t understand why we can’t all go together.
Thomas : Yeah, that’s tricky… By the way, Emma told me she absolutely wants to go surfing this summer. Did you know that?
Claire : Uh, no! She told me about horseback riding! You see, she doesn’t tell us the same things…
Thomas : Typical Emma! So, what about the dates, then? Because Sophie has already booked the cottage.
Claire : Well, we’ve paid too – Marc put down the deposit! Listen, maybe we could change regions? Would La Vendée interest you?
Thomas : Hmm… I need to talk to Sophie about it. Her daughters love that part of Brittany; they’ve been going there since they were little.
Claire : I understand… It’s complicated to accommodate everyone in our blended families, isn’t it?
Thomas : You said it! And Lucas, what does he prefer? The sea or the mountains?
Claire : The sea, definitely! He’s eager to learn windsurfing. Besides, that could be a solution – could we have a holiday together?
Thomas : A holiday together? You mean… all of us?
Claire : Why not? The children would be thrilled! We’d rent a big house, everyone their own room…
Thomas : Uh… I’m not sure… Sophie might not be comfortable with that.
Claire : Neither is Marc, I admit. But for the children, it would be great! They keep asking us why we can’t do things all together anymore.
Thomas : It’s true that Chloé often asks me that… Say, what if we just spent a few days together? Not the whole holiday?
Claire : Ah, that’s an idea! Like a long weekend? That could work!
Thomas : Yeah! And that way, each couple keeps their main holiday with their own family.
Claire : Perfect! Okay, but we’ll have to find an activity that appeals to all our little ones… Between Emma and her teenage moods, Lucas and his boundless energy, and little Chloé…
Thomas : Not to forget Sophie’s daughters! Lisa is 14; she gets along well with Emma. And Manon is 10; she could be the link between Lucas and Chloé.
Claire : And Antoine, how old is he again? 13 years old?
Thomas : I think so, yes. Well, for the group activity, how about an amusement park? Or something with animals?
Claire : Oh, good idea! A safari park! Or… oh, I’ve got it! A stay at Center Parcs!
Thomas : Center Parcs – that’s clever! They’re everywhere, with indoor pools and activities for all ages…
Claire : Exactly! And we can book cottages nearby. Each family keeps its own space but we can easily meet up.
Thomas : I love that idea! Well, now we’ll have to convince our significant others…
Claire : Let me handle Marc. You take care of Sophie. Shall we talk again tomorrow?
Thomas : Perfect! And if that doesn’t work, we’ll stick to plan B: everyone goes to their own region, but we’ll avoid the same dates.
Claire : Okay! Oh, by the way, don’t forget Lucas’s medical certificate for the camp in September.
Thomas : Darn, I completely forgot! Thanks for reminding me. Okay, I’m off – Sophie is waiting for me for dinner.
Claire : No worries! We’ll keep each other posted, then. Have a good evening!
Thomas : You too! And let’s keep our fingers crossed for Center Parcs!
Claire : Great, I can’t wait to see the kids’ faces if it works! See you tomorrow!
Thomas : See you tomorrow! Bye!
