Dialogue about informing children about a divorce

Marc: Oui, tu as raison.
Sophie: Non, Lucas.
Marc: Ta maman a raison.
On va déménager ?
Je me débrouille !

DIALOGUE

Sophie: All right, Marc… we can’t put off this conversation any longer. We have to talk to the children tonight.
Marc: Yes, you’re right. Uh… how do we do this exactly? I feel like I don’t have the words.
Sophie: Me too, I have a knot in my stomach. But we promised each other we’d be honest with them, remember?
Marc: Of course. Emma and Lucas! Can you come into the living room, please? Mom and Dad would like to talk to you.
Emma: *enters dragging her feet* Oh dear, what have we done this time?
Lucas: *runs to the couch* Is it about the summer holidays? Where are we going this year?
Sophie: *smiles sadly* No, sweetheart, it’s not about the holidays. Sit down next to us.
Emma: *frowning* You two look like you’re having a bad day… Did something happen?
Marc: Uh… well, Mom and I have something important to tell you.
Lucas: Is someone sick? Is it Grandma?
Sophie: No, no, nobody is sick. It’s… it’s about Dad and me.
Emma: *worried* Oh? What’s going on?
Marc: Well, kids… Mom and I have decided that we’re not going to live together anymore.
Lucas: *confused* What do you mean, not going to live together anymore? Are you going on a trip?
Sophie: No, Lucas. Dad and I are going to… we’re going to get a divorce.
Emma: *shocked* What?! You’re getting divorced? But… but why?
Marc: Sweetheart, sometimes adults… sometimes love changes. We still love each other, but differently.
Lucas: *starting to cry* I don’t want you to get divorced! That’s awful!
Sophie: *holds Lucas in her arms* I know it’s hard to understand, sweetheart.
Emma: *angry* Whose fault is it? Is it you, Mom, is that it? You want to leave!
Sophie: Emma, it’s nobody’s fault. It’s a decision Dad and I made together.
Marc: Your mom is right. We tried to fix things, but… well, sometimes it’s not enough.
Lucas: But where are we going to live? And Réglisse? *talking about their cat*
Sophie: So listen to me carefully, both of you. You are going to live here with Mom, and Dad will take an apartment not too far away.
Emma: *sarcastic* Great! And what about us in all this?
Marc: Hey, my girl, you’ll always be our number-one priority. That will never change.
Lucas: Will I be able to come to Dad’s whenever I want?
Sophie: Of course! Dad will have you every other weekend and half the holidays.
Emma: *suddenly worried* And what about school? And my friends? Are we going to move?
Marc: No, no, you’ll stay at the same school. We’ve thought of all that.
Lucas: *sniffling* Why don’t you love each other anymore?
Sophie: Oh, sweetheart… Dad and I still love each other, but as friends now.
Emma: *pouting* All the parents of my classmates say that before arguing in front of their children.
Marc: Emma, look at me. We promise we won’t argue. We want to stay a family, just… different.
Lucas: Tommy, at school, his parents are divorced. He says it’s cool because he has two bedrooms.
Sophie: *relieved* There you go! And you’ll have twice as many cuddles too!
Emma: *still angry* Yeah… What if you meet someone else? Will we have stepparents?
Marc: *embarrassed* Uh… for now, we’re only thinking about you. If that ever happens, we’ll talk about it together.
Lucas: I don’t want a stepmother! Stepmothers are mean!
Sophie: *laughing despite herself* You watch too many cartoons!
Emma: *softening* But… are you sure? Can’t you try some more?
Marc: Sweetie, we’ve been trying for a long time. Now, we think it’ll be better for everyone.
Lucas: Even for us ?
Sophie: It’s mostly for you. You won’t see us arguing or being sad anymore.
Emma: *sighing* Well… if you think that’s better… But can I keep my two posters in my room at Dad’s?
Marc: *smiling* Of course! We’ll even buy some new ones!
Lucas: And Réglisse, where’s he going to go?
Sophie: He’ll stay here with you, but Dad will be able to see him too.
Emma: *pragmatic* By the way… who’s going to help me with maths now? Dad, you’re hopeless at maths!
Marc: *laughing* Hey! I can handle it! And besides, Mom will always be there for that.
Sophie: *moved* You know what? We love you so much, and that will never change. We’ll always be Dad and Mom.
Lucas: *throwing himself into their arms* I love you too!
Emma: *joining the hug* Well… it’s going to be weird, but… I love you too.
Marc: So it’s a promise: we’ll stay a family, okay?
Sophie: A different family, but still a real family.
