Marie : Ben écoute, tu peux prendre ta voiture, non ?
Thomas : Ma voiture ?
Thomas : Non, t’as raison…
On appelle l’agent demain matin ?
Marie : Parfait !
Marie : Haha ! Allez, on fête ça ce soir ? On sort dîner ?
Thomas : Excellente idée ! Profitons-en avant d’habiter loin du centre !
English translation
Marie and Thomas, a married couple, are discussing in their living room their upcoming move planned for three months from now. They are comparing different housing options based on the home-to-work commutes. Marie works in the city centre as an accountant, while Thomas is an engineer in an industrial area on the outskirts. This important discussion will determine the choice of their future neighbourhood.
DIALOGUE
Marie : Right then, Thomas, we really need to decide on the apartment today. I’ve got the three files here… What do you think?
Thomas : Uh, well actually, I worked out all the commutes last night. It’s not easy, is it! You work in the city centre, I’m on the opposite side of town…
Marie : Yeah, I know. Well, the Belleville apartment, I really like it. By metro, it’s twenty minutes max to get to work.
Thomas : Ah, but wait! Belleville? Are you kidding! For me, from there to the industrial area it’s hell… I’d have to cross all of Paris!
Marie : Well, listen, you can take your car, can’t you?
Thomas : My car? With the traffic jams? Marie, we’re talking at least an hour and a half each way! Morning and evening, that’s three hours a day stuck in traffic!
Marie : Oh really? That much? I hadn’t realised… And by public transport?
Thomas : Oh, that’s even worse! Metro to Nation, then the RER, then a bus… At least two hours! And that’s if there’s no strike!
Marie : Oh dear… Well, what about the Vincennes apartment?
Thomas : Ah, that’s already better for me! I have the direct RER, and after that it’s only fifteen minutes by bus. In total, um… about forty-five minutes.
Marie : Great! What about me then? I checked… RER to Châtelet, then Metro line 1. It should be fine, about fifty minutes anyway.
Thomas : Yeah… That’s acceptable. But hey, there’s a third apartment too, in Montreuil!
Marie : Ah yes, that one… Honestly, I’m not really into that neighborhood. It’s a bit seedy, don’t you think?
Thomas : No, not at all! Montreuil is buzzing now! And transport-wise, it’s perfect for both of us. I’ve got the direct bus to the industrial area.
Marie : Really? How long?
Thomas : Twenty-five minutes by bus, and there’s a bus every ten minutes during rush hour. Super convenient!
Marie : What about me then?
Thomas : Well, you take Metro line 9, direct to République, and then you change to get to your office. Come on, thirty-five minutes!
Marie : Hmm… Not bad… But wait, I forgot something important! What if we want to work out in the evening? Or go out?
Thomas : What do you mean?
Marie : Well, think about it! If we live in Montreuil and want to go to the cinema downtown, or meet up with friends…
Thomas : Ah yes, that’s true! The last metro is around 1:15 a.m. on weekdays… On weekends it’s fine, but…
Marie : Exactly! From Vincennes or Belleville, we have more flexibility!
Thomas : Hey, it just occurred to me… What about bikes? Couldn’t we get serious about them?
Marie : By bike? Are you kidding! Me, to downtown, maybe – but you, all the way to your industrial area… That’s way too far!
Thomas : Uh, yeah… I said something stupid. What about a scooter then?
Marie : A scooter? Thomas, it’s November! Can you imagine being out in the rain and the cold?
Thomas : No, you’re right… Okay, listen, if we sum up: Belleville is great for you but a nightmare for me…
Marie : Vincennes is fine for both of us, but a little long for me…
Thomas : And Montreuil is perfect transport-wise but not as nice for going out…
Marie : Wait, I’ve got an idea! What if we looked into remote work options?
Thomas : Ah! Good idea! My boss told me we could do two days a week from home…
Marie : Same for me! So if we each work from home two days…
Thomas : Well, that changes everything! Even if the commute is a bit long, it’s only three days a week…
Marie : Exactly! So we can choose the neighborhood we like best!
Thomas : So? Belleville? This apartment is really great…
Marie : Yes, but honestly, even with working from home, your commute is still a problem… An hour and a half, three times a week, that’s rough!
Thomas : Yeah… Well, Vincennes then? Is that a reasonable compromise?
Marie : I think that’s the smartest, yes. And the neighborhood is nice, there’s the Bois de Vincennes…
Thomas : OK for Vincennes! Shall we call the agent tomorrow morning?
Marie : Perfect! And we’ll confirm the working-from-home arrangement with our bosses before signing!
Thomas : All right, it’s settled! In three months we’ll be suburbanites!
Marie : Haha! Come on, shall we celebrate tonight? Shall we go out to dinner?
Thomas : Great idea! Let’s enjoy it while we can before we live far from the city center!
