Conversation between partners about feeling unequal burden of housework at home

Thomas : Tu as raison, je suis désolé.

English translation

Marie and Thomas have been living together for five years. This evening, after an especially busy day, Marie decides to bring up a topic that has been worrying her for some time: she feels like she’s taking care of most of the household chores even though they both work full-time.

DIALOGUE

Marie : Thomas, we need to talk… I’m really fed up with this situation.
Thomas : Uh… what situation? What’s going on?
Marie : Well, look around you! Who did the dishes this morning? Who started a load of laundry last night? And who is going to take the trash out again tomorrow?
Thomas : Oh come on, you think I do nothing? But Marie, I mowed the lawn on Sunday!
Marie : Once every two weeks! Meanwhile I’m the one doing everything every day – shopping, cleaning, cooking… I feel like your maid!
Thomas : Huh? You’re exaggerating! I do my part too. I even fixed the sink last week.
Marie : Thomas, be honest… Apart from the small repairs and the gardening, what exactly do you do?
Thomas : Well… uh… I take out the trash from time to time…
Marie : “From time to time”! That’s exactly the problem. I’m the one who has to do it every day!
Thomas : But why don’t you ask me? If I’d known it bothered you…
Marie : Exactly! Why should I always have to ask? We live in the same apartment, don’t we?
Thomas : Alright, okay, I admit I might not be paying enough attention…
Marie : “Maybe”? Thomas, last night you left your plate on the table and went to watch TV!
Thomas : Darn, that’s true… I was exhausted after work.
Marie : And what about me then? Do you think I’m not tired? I work just as much as you do!
Thomas : You’re right, I’m sorry. But how do we make that change?
Marie : We could set up a chore schedule, what do you think?
Thomas : Uh… a schedule? That reminds me of summer camp when I was a kid!
Marie : Very funny! But maybe that’s the solution for us to share the work fairly.
Thomas : Alright, OK… So then we actually split everything: cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping…
Marie : Exactly! And no telling me “I don’t know how to” to get out of it!
Thomas : Okay, okay! By the way… who’s cooking dinner tonight?
Marie : Well, actually, it’s your turn! I did the shopping and made lunch.
Thomas : Ah darn… What’s left in the fridge?
Marie : See? You don’t even know what we have to eat! How do you expect to help out if you’re not interested in anything?
Thomas : Okay, I got the message. I’ll go check and make something.
Marie : And tomorrow, shall we sit down together to divide up the chores?
Thomas : I promise! But tell me, you could’ve told me about all this earlier, couldn’t you?
Marie : I was hoping you’d realize it on your own… Apparently, I was wrong.
Thomas : Well, I’m not a mind reader! But now that it’s been said, we’ll sort it out.
Marie : I certainly hope so! Because otherwise, we’re going to have serious problems, huh!
Thomas : Don’t worry, I’ll get to it. Alright, I’ll see what I can cook…
Marie : Great! And I’ll finally be able to rest a bit tonight!
Thomas : By the way, Marie… thanks for opening my eyes. I hadn’t realized it was such a burden for you.
Marie : The important thing is that we’ve talked about it. Now it really has to change!
Thomas : That will change, I promise! So, tomato pasta – does that work for you?
Marie : Perfect! And don’t forget to clean up after yourself!
Thomas : Of course, chef! From now on, a new life!
