DIALOGUE
Thomas : Sophie ! Alors, comment ça s’est passé ton retour ? Tu as réussi à rentrer finalement ?
Thomas : Tu l’as, cette déclaration ?
Thomas : Et ta carte bancaire, tu l’as refaite ?
Sophie : Je vais me battre avec eux. J’ai gardé tous les justificatifs, on verra bien !
Thomas : Bon courage !
Sophie : Une main courante ? Pourquoi faire ?
Sophie : Tu as raison… Bon, encore une démarche de plus ! Au commissariat du quartier, ça se fait ?
Thomas : Ouais, n’importe quel commissariat.
Thomas : Courage Sophie ! Et tiens-moi au courant !
English translation
Sophie has just returned to France after a disastrous holiday in Italy where she lost all her documents. She visits her friend Thomas to tell him about her misadventures and to ask for advice on the administrative procedures she still needs to complete now that she is back in the country.
DIALOGUE
Thomas : Sophie! So, how did your return go? Did you manage to get back in the end?
Sophie : Ah Thomas, what a nightmare! Luckily I’m back, but now I still have loads of stuff to do…
Thomas : Tell me everything! The last time we spoke on the phone, you were at the consulate in Rome, weren’t you?
Sophie : Yeah, exactly. So they gave me a temporary travel document, but, uh… now that I’m in France, I have to replace all my documents!
Thomas : Oh really? I thought that once you were back home, your problems were over!
Sophie : No, actually not! The travel document is only good for getting back. Now I have to get a new ID card, replace my driving licence…
Thomas : Damn! And for the ID card, where do you have to go?
Sophie : At the town hall. But get this: they told me I have to bring the statement of loss I made in Italy!
Thomas : Do you have that statement?
Sophie : Uh… that’s where it gets complicated. I have it, but it’s in Italian! And apparently I need to have it translated by a sworn translator.
Thomas : Oh dear! It’s going to cost you an arm again, isn’t it?
Sophie : Don’t even get me started! Between the consulate, the return trip, and now the translation… I’ve already spent more than 300 euros!
Thomas : Wait, but is it the same for the driver’s licence?
Sophie : Actually, I called the prefecture this morning. They told me I have to get my new ID card first!
Thomas : Ah yeah, makes sense… But in the meantime, you can’t drive?
Sophie : Yes, with the receipt for the renewal application, but only once I’ve submitted the paperwork. Basically, I’m stuck for at least another week!
Thomas : Great! And at work, are they understanding about the situation?
Sophie : Fortunately, yes. My boss has been really understanding. But I still had to take two days off to deal with all these formalities…
Thomas : And your bank card, did you get it reissued?
Sophie : That was the most urgent! I had it reissued as soon as I arrived at the airport. It should arrive tomorrow.
Thomas : By the way, what about your travel insurance? Doesn’t it cover that kind of expense?
Sophie : Now that’s the last straw! They say they reimburse transportation costs to get home, but not the administrative formalities…
Thomas : Seriously? That’s ridiculous!
Sophie : I’ll take them on. I’ve kept all the supporting documents – we’ll see what happens!
Thomas : Good luck! By the way, did you think about filing an incident report here as well?
Sophie : An incident report? What for?
Thomas : Ben, just in case someone were to use your papers in France… My cousin had that problem two years ago.
Sophie : Oh, I hadn’t thought of that! Do you think it’s really necessary?
Thomas : If I were you, I’d do it. It doesn’t cost anything and it could save you some trouble later.
Sophie : You’re right… Well, one more thing to do! Can you do that at the local police station?
Thomas : Yeah, any police station. You explain the situation and it’s done in ten minutes.
Sophie : And my health insurance card – I forgot to tell you about it! It was in my wallet too…
Thomas : Oh my, Sophie! You really had everything on you that day!
Sophie : Well, I was on vacation! I didn’t think anyone would steal my bag on the beach!
Thomas : For the health insurance card, it’s on ameli.fr, right? Maybe you can order it online.
Sophie : I tried, but uh… I can’t log into my account! It asks me for my card number…
Thomas : Ah yes, the vicious circle! Call them directly then.
Sophie : I spent an hour on the phone this morning! Endless waiting, then they told me to send a written request…
Thomas : What? A letter? In 2024?
Sophie : Yes, really! With a photocopy of my new ID card… which I don’t have yet!
Thomas : This bureaucracy is crazy! Well, at least now you know what to expect.
Sophie : Yeah… Come on, I hope it’ll be over in two weeks! And you, promise me you’ll never go on vacation carrying all your documents with you!
Thomas : I promise! Next time, leave all that in the hotel safe!
Sophie : Exactly! Well, I’m off, I have an appointment at the translator’s in an hour…
Thomas : Hang in there, Sophie! And keep me posted!
