Marie: Un camper ?
Bon, écoute, on va faire autrement.
English translation
Marie and Julien, a couple in their thirties, are planning their next summer holiday. They are sitting in their living room with tourist brochures scattered across the coffee table and discussing the different accommodation options for their trip to Provence.
DIALOGUE
Marie: So, shall we review our holiday plans? I’ve checked the hotel prices in Provence and… uh… they’re pretty steep!
Julien: Oh really? How much would that cost us?
Marie: Well, for a week in a decent three-star hotel, we’re easily looking at €1,200, not including meals.
Julien: Ouch! That’s clearly going to hurt the wallet… What if we looked into camping? It could be nice, couldn’t it?
Marie: Hm… with our tent? I must admit the idea of sleeping on the ground for a week doesn’t really appeal to me…
Julien: Well, why not a motorhome? We could rent one. That way we’d have total freedom!
Marie: A motorhome? Do you know how to drive those behemoths?
Julien: Well… um… not exactly, but it can’t be that hard! And anyway, imagine: we wake up wherever we want, we eat whatever we want…
Marie: Yeah… And we park wherever we can, wait in line for the toilets, empty the wastewater… Very romantic!
Julien: Come on, don’t be so negative! It could be quite an adventure. And besides, budget-wise, it’s the middle ground between a hotel and camping.
Marie: Okay, but I have one condition: we book at least the first few nights at campsites with facilities. I don’t want us driving around in circles on the first night!
Julien: Deal! I’ll check the rental prices… Oh shoot, I just thought of something: do I need a special license?
Marie: Good question! For the larger models, I think you need a heavy vehicle license. You’d better check.
Julien: Darn… If that’s the case, we’re in trouble. What if we just got a big family tent? With air mattresses, it could be comfortable.
Marie: You change your mind like you change your shirt! Okay, listen, let’s do it differently. What if we mixed it? A few nights camping for the atmosphere, and a few nights in a hotel for the comfort?
Julien: Now that’s an idea! The best of both worlds. We could start with a hotel to recover from the trip, then finish with camping?
Marie: Rather the other way around, no? Camping first, that way we finish in style with the hotel’s spa!
Julien: Excellent strategy! So, what should we book first?
Marie: Wait… I just got a text from my sister. She says she has a motorhome and could lend it to us!
Julien: Seriously? Well, that’s hitting the jackpot! Where does she live again?
Marie: In Lyon. It’s a bit of a detour, but if we save €800 on the rental…
Julien: It’s totally worth it! What’s her motorhome like?
Marie: She says it’s a recent model with six seats. Perfect for the two of us! And she specifies that we can drive it with a category B driving licence.
Julien: Great! Well then, all that’s left is to book a few nights in hotels to alternate. Which do you prefer: sea view or a view of the lavender fields?
Marie: Hmm… why not both? One night on the coast, and one night inland?
Julien: We’re really treating ourselves! But you’re right, we might as well make the most of it. Shall I take care of the hotel reservations then?
Marie: Perfect! And I’ll call my sister to confirm the loan of the motorhome. These holidays are going to be fantastic!
Julien: I can’t wait! Between us, I never would have thought that planning a trip could be so complicated… but so much fun!
Marie: Great! Now we’ll have to think about the list of what we’re taking. Because when it comes to space in a motorhome…
Julien: One thing at a time! First we’ll sort out the accommodations, then we’ll worry about the luggage!
