Conversation about doctor’s visits and who will accompany

Emma, tu as ton contrôle chez l’orthodontiste mardi à 16h30.
Emma: Ah maman, j’avais complètement oublié ! Tu pourras m’accompagner ?
Marc: Euh, attends Claire…
Claire: Zut ! Tu as raison, j’avais zappé.
Emma: Papa, laisse maman venir !
Emma: Ouais, on assure niveau solidarité familiale !
Claire: Parfait ! Je vous aime, vous savez ça ?

The Dubois family is organizing the medical appointments for the week. Claire, the mother, talks with her husband Marc and their teenage daughter Emma about the various doctor’s visits scheduled and who will be able to accompany whom, given everyone’s busy schedules.

DIALOGUE

Claire: Okay, we need to get organized for this week’s medical appointments. Emma, you have your check-up at the orthodontist on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Emma: Ah, Mom, I completely forgot! Can you come with me?
Marc: Uh, wait, Claire… Don’t you have your meeting with the suppliers on Tuesday afternoon?
Claire: Darn! You’re right, I completely forgot. That meeting can’t be rescheduled, it’s too important.
Emma: Well then, who’s going to come with me? I hate going alone, especially when they have to tighten my braces…
Marc: I might be able to make myself available. Hold on while I check my schedule… Hmm, I have a conference call at 4 p.m., but it normally shouldn’t last more than an hour.
Claire: And what if it runs over? You know with the orthodontist you absolutely mustn’t be late.
Emma: Yeah, last time the receptionist was really not cool when we arrived ten minutes late!
Marc: Okay, listen, I’ll ask to postpone my meeting. It’s not the end of the world.
Claire: Are you sure? If not, I can try to negotiate with my boss…
Emma: Huh? Mom, don’t make such a fuss about it! Dad can come with me just fine.
Marc: Exactly! And besides, it’ll be a nice break from my paperwork. By the way, are there any other appointments this week?
Claire: Actually, yes… I have my annual gynecologist appointment Thursday morning. I’ll go to that one alone, obviously.
Emma: Oh? You don’t want me to come with you? Last time you said having moral support really helped.
Claire: That’s sweet, my darling, but you have class on Thursday morning. And besides, this time it’s just a routine check-up.
Marc: What about me then? When is my appointment with the cardiologist again?
Claire: Friday at 2 p.m. And honestly, Marc, I’d really like to come with you. Ever since your little problem last year…
Marc: Uh… Claire, you’re worrying for nothing! It’s just a follow-up, Dr. Lemaire said so.
Emma: Dad, let Mom come! She’ll be more at ease, and so will you.
Marc: Well… if it’ll put you both at ease… But I’m warning you, I don’t want you sitting there with long faces in the waiting room!
Claire: Nonsense! We’ll be very discreet, won’t we, Emma?
Emma: Promise! By the way, what about Grandma? Didn’t she have her appointment with the ophthalmologist this week too?
Claire: Oh yes! Thanks for reminding me. It’s on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Mom still prefers that someone accompany her; her eyesight is getting worse and worse…
Marc: I can’t on Wednesday morning, I have an important presentation. Sorry…
Emma: I’ve got class… Darn, it’s complicated!
Claire: Okay, I’ll see if I can take the morning off. Anyway, with Mom, it’s best to be patient. Last time, we were there for two hours!
Marc: Hey, why don’t we ask your brother? He’s working shifts at the moment, isn’t he?
Claire: Good idea! I’ll call him tonight. Julien loves taking Mom to the doctor; he always makes her laugh.
Emma: Yeah, and that way Grandma will be in a good mood! Do you remember the last time when she was all stressed out?
Claire: Exactly. Okay, let’s recap: Tuesday Emma at the orthodontist with Dad, Wednesday Grandma at the ophthalmologist with Uncle Julien, I hope, Thursday I’ll be on my own at the gynecologist…
Marc: And Friday it’s me at the cardiologist with my entourage!
Emma: Hey! We’re not that bad!
Claire: Well, I just hope there won’t be any complications or last-minute postponements…
Marc: Come on, it’ll be fine! And at least nobody will have to go to an important appointment alone.
Emma: Yeah, we’ve got family solidarity handled! Okay, now that that’s settled, can I go study?
Claire: Go ahead, sweetheart. And Marc, don’t forget to put Emma’s appointment in your calendar!
Marc: It’s already done! Right, I’m going to call my office to reschedule that meeting.
Claire: Perfect! I love you both, you know that?
