Conversation about anger and ways of expressing it

Tu lui as dit quelque chose ?
Je ne me reconnaissais plus…
Sophie: Euh… tu as crié comment exactement ? Qu’est-ce que tu lui as dit ?
Camille: Tu as raison !
Camille: Tu as raison… Bon, souhaitez-moi bonne chance !
Camille: Promis ! Merci pour tout, petite sœur. Tu es vraiment de bon conseil !

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Hi Camille! Are you okay? You look… uh, how to say… a bit on edge, aren’t you?
Camille: Ah, Sophie! Come in, come in… Annoyed? You must be joking! I’m downright furious!
Sophie: Oh dear! What happened? Is it because of Marc?
Camille: Marc, yes! Can you believe he forgot our wedding anniversary again? Fifteen years of marriage, Sophie, fifteen years!
Sophie: Really? He completely forgot? But how is that even possible?
Camille: Well, he came home last night as if nothing had happened! Not even a single word, nothing at all! I was there, in my lovely dress, the candlelit dinner…
Sophie: Ouch… Here, sit down and tell me everything. Did you say anything to him?
Camille: Did I say anything to him? I lost it, Sophie! I screamed like a madwoman! I hardly recognized myself…
Sophie: Um… how exactly did you scream? What did you say to him?
Camille: I yelled: “You’re selfish! You only think about your work!” Well, things like that… Honestly, I’m ashamed now.
Sophie: Hmmm… And how did he react to your screams?
Camille: He got defensive right away! He slammed the door and went to sleep at his mother’s. We haven’t spoken since yesterday.
Sophie: Oh no! But tell me, do you think that was the right way to express your anger?
Camille: Well no, of course not! But in the moment, I was so disappointed… Anger just hits me all at once, you know?
Sophie: Yes, I understand… But you know, I had the same problem with Thomas. My therapist taught me some techniques.
Camille: Oh really? Which ones? Because right now I don’t know what to do anymore… I feel like a monster!
Sophie: First, when you feel anger rising, you can take a deep breath and count to ten. It really works!
Camille: Count to ten? Do you think that’s enough when you’re really furious?
Sophie: Well, that’s a start! And besides, instead of saying “you’re selfish”, you can say “I feel neglected when you forget…”
Camille: Ah, I see… Talking about my feelings rather than accusing him, is that it?
Sophie: Exactly! And, well, avoid arguing when you’re angry. Tell him you need time to think.
Camille: Yeah… But sometimes I need to let out my anger right away! What do I do?
Sophie: As for me, I go for a run! Or I punch a pillow – it feels amazing! Here, try it!
Camille: Punch a pillow? Won’t that seem ridiculous?
Sophie: No, not at all! It’s better than yelling at Marc, right? At least you let off steam without hurting anyone.
Camille: That’s true… Do you think I should go and apologize now?
Sophie: Uh… careful! You can apologize as a formality, but not for the substance! Your birthday is important!
Camille: You’re right! I can regret yelling without having to accept that he ignores me!
Sophie: There you go! And suggest talking things over calmly. Tell him how you really feel.
Camille: Okay, fine… But if he starts minimizing my feelings again, what should I do?
Sophie: You tell him firmly: “I need you to listen to me without judging me.” And if he keeps going, you end the conversation.
Camille: Hmmm, it’s easier said than done! With him, I tend to lose my temper quickly…
Sophie: Exactly! You can explain that to him too. Tell him you’re working on how you express your anger.
Camille: Oh, that’s a good idea! That way he’ll understand that I’m making an effort…
Sophie: And don’t hesitate to take breaks during the conversation if you feel things are getting heated!
Camille: Well, yeah… Thanks, Sophie, you’re really helping me! I’ll call him so we can talk tonight.
Sophie: Great! And don’t forget: it’s normal to feel angry! It’s just how you express it that matters.
Camille: You’re right… Well, wish me luck! I hope we can manage to reconcile.
Sophie: I’m sure of it! And you’ll call me to tell me how it went, okay?
Camille: I promise! Thanks for everything, little sister. You’re really good at giving advice!
