Choosing a vacation destination together with children

Thomas: Tu as raison, chérie.
Lucas: N’importe quoi Emma…
Thomas: Bon, bon… on pourrait prendre l’avion alors.
Thomas: Zut, tu as raison.
Emma: Chouette !
Thomas: T’as raison chérie.

English translation

It’s a Sunday morning in February. Claire and Thomas, a married couple with two children (Emma, 8, and Lucas, 12), are having breakfast as a family. They are discussing their upcoming summer holiday and need to choose a destination that will appeal to the whole family while staying within their budget.

DIALOGUE

Claire: Right, we really need to decide on the summer holiday. Emma and Lucas keep asking me where we’re going this year.
Thomas: You’re right, sweetheart. Besides, if we start now, we’ll get better prices. What did you have in mind?
Emma: I want to go to the seaside! I want to build sandcastles and swim with the dolphins!
Lucas: Oh, come on, Emma… Dolphins aren’t in every sea! I prefer the mountains; we could go hiking and mountain biking.
Claire: Uh… kids, let’s talk this over between ourselves first, okay? Thomas, what do you think?
Thomas: Well, why not compromise? We could find somewhere by the sea with mountains not far away. The Côte d’Azur, for example?
Claire: Oh yes, that’s an idea! But… you know it’s prohibitively expensive in summer. Our budget is a maximum of 2,000 euros for two weeks.
Lucas: Dad, could we go to Spain? My friend Julien went there last year, he says it’s great!
Thomas: Well, that’s not a bad idea! Spain is cheaper than France in the summer. And the kids could practice their Spanish.
Emma: But I don’t know how to speak Spanish! What if I get lost?
Claire: Sweetie, you’ll be with us! And besides, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn a few words. Right, Thomas?
Thomas: Exactly! So… the Costa Brava? There are beautiful beaches and it’s not too far from Barcelona.
Claire: Mmh… wait, let me think. By car, how many hours’ drive is it?
Lucas: Oh no, not the car! Last time, Emma was sick the whole trip!
Emma: That’s not true! I only threw up once!
Thomas: Okay, okay… we could fly then. From Lyon, there are direct flights to Barcelona.
Claire: Uh, Thomas… plane tickets for four, plus the hotel, plus meals… We’ll blow the budget!
Thomas: Darn, you’re right. Well, what if we stayed in France after all? Brittany, for example?
Lucas: Brittany? But it rains there all the time!
Claire: Lucas! That’s not true, and even if it rains a bit, there’s plenty to do. The castles, the museums…
Emma: And the crêpes! I love crêpes!
Thomas: There you go – Emma’s got it! And besides, Brittany is magnificent. Saint-Malo, Mont-Saint-Michel…
Claire: Yes, but… the kids dream of sun and warmth. I understand them.
Lucas: What if we went camping? It’s cheaper and we might be able to go further!
Thomas: Ah, good idea, kiddo! Claire, what do you think?
Claire: Camping… uh… with the kids… and what if it rains? And besides, I don’t really feel like cooking on holiday, you know?
Emma: Mom, we can have barbecues! And sleeping in a tent is like an adventure!
Thomas: Come on, Claire, it could be fun! And there are campsites with pools now, activities for the kids…
Claire: Okay… fine for camping. But then we’re getting a mobile home! No way we’re sleeping on the ground!
Lucas: Yes! So where are we going? Spain? Italy?
Thomas: Wait, I’ve got another idea… What about the Dordogne? It’s beautiful, the weather’s nice in summer, it’s not too far…
Claire: Oh, Thomas! We’ll never be able to decide like this! Okay, here’s what we’re going to do: everyone suggests ONE destination, and we vote.
Emma: I’m voting for Spain! With the beach!
Lucas: Me too, Spain – for the sports activities!
Thomas: Uh… well, I’m picking the Dordogne. It’s a good compromise.
Claire: And me… oh, what the heck! Spain then! But in a mobile home at a campsite, okay?
Thomas: Perfect! Okay, I’ll check online this afternoon. Is the Costa Brava okay with you?
Emma: Great! We’re going to Spain!
Lucas: Great! I need to tell Julien!
Claire: Hold on, kids! We haven’t booked yet, okay! First we’ll check prices and availability.
Thomas: You’re right, darling. Well, to be continued… But at least we’ve made a decision!
Claire: Yes… well, I hope we won’t regret it!
