Agreeing on when to decorate the Christmas tree and who will do it

Sophie : Tu as raison, ma chérie. Alors, quand est-ce qu’on s’y met ? Ce weekend ?
Thomas : Euh, attendez…
Tiens, ça me fait penser…
Sophie : Oh, Thomas !
Emma : On pourrait faire moitié-moitié !
Sophie : *[riant]* D’accord, d’accord ! On fera une playlist moderne. Ça marche pour tout le monde ?
Emma : Parfait ! Alors c’est décidé : opération sapin dimanche après-midi !
Thomas : Allez, affaire conclue !

English translation

It’s early December and the Dubois family are beginning to prepare for the end-of-year holidays. Sophie and Thomas are discussing in their living room how to organize Christmas, particularly the ideal time to put up and decorate the Christmas tree. Their daughter Emma, a student, will soon be coming home from classes and will be able to join the conversation.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Well, Thomas, we need to talk about the Christmas tree. It’s already 3 December, and you know how much I like everything to be ready in time for the holidays.
Thomas : Uh… already? Don’t you think we still have time? We usually put it up around 15 December, don’t we?
Sophie : Exactly! This year, I’d really like us to get started earlier. My sister is coming with her children the weekend of the 16th, and it’d be nice if the Christmas tree were already set up.
Thomas : Oh really? You didn’t tell me they were coming so early! Well… why not, but who’s going to take care of it this time?
Sophie : That’s exactly the problem. Last year we both struggled with those impossible garlands, remember?
Thomas : Oh dear, don’t even mention it! I still have nightmares about those baubles that kept falling off. And you kept saying to me: “No, not there, more to the right!”
Emma : *[entering the living room]* Hi! What are you talking about? I heard “nightmares” when I came in!
Sophie : Ah, Emma ! Perfect timing! We were just talking about the Christmas tree.
Emma : Huh? But it’s only early December! You’re in a rush this year!
Thomas : That’s exactly what I was saying! But your mother insists we do it before Aunt Martine’s visit.
Emma : Ah, okay… So you want me to help you, is that it?
Sophie : Well, if you don’t mind… You’ve always had good taste in decorating, and you’re taller than me to hang the star on top!
Emma : *[laughing]* Ah, I see! You want to take advantage of my height! Well, why not, but on one condition.
Thomas : Which one?
Emma : Let’s do this properly this time! Not like last year when you wanted to do everything in an hour. We need to take our time so it looks nice.
Sophie : You’re right, my darling. So, when do we get started? This weekend?
Thomas : Uh, wait… We have to buy the tree first! And I’m not free on Saturday, I promised Paul I’d help him move.
Sophie : Darn! I’d forgotten about that move. And Sunday?
Emma : On Sunday, I can’t in the morning, I have my yoga class. But the afternoon works.
Thomas : Perfect! So Sunday morning I’ll go get the tree, and in the afternoon we’ll all decorate it together. Does that work for you?
Sophie : Wait, wait! What kind of tree are you going to get? I hope it’s not too big! Do you remember two years ago, that huge one that touched the ceiling?
Emma : *[laughing]* Oh yes! It was gigantic! It was like we lived in a forest!
Thomas : Okay, okay, I get it! This time I’ll measure before buying. How tall do you want it? One metre fifty?
Sophie : One metre seventy would be perfect. No more! And get a Nordmann, they shed fewer needles.
Emma : And while you do that, I can get the decorations down from the attic and sort through them. Some of them are probably broken.
Thomas : Good idea! Oh, that reminds me… Last year we couldn’t find the blue string of lights, the one my mother had given us.
Sophie : Oh yes! It was in the box of red decorations. I saw it when I put things away in January.
Emma : By the way, are we keeping the same decoration style this year or changing it? Personally, I’d like to try something more modern.
Sophie : What do you mean by “modern”?
Emma : Well, I don’t know… Maybe different colours? Gold and white, for example, instead of the traditional red and green?
Thomas : Hmm… Why not, but we’d have to buy new decorations then. And that stuff is expensive!
Sophie : Oh, Thomas! It’s only once a year! And besides, Emma’s right, we’ve had the same decor for years. A little change wouldn’t hurt.
Emma : We could do half-and-half! Keep a few of the old decorations that are dear to us, and add some new ones.
Thomas : That’s a good compromise! Okay then, let’s recap: Sunday morning I’ll pick up the tree, Emma will get the boxes out, and you, Sophie?
Sophie : I’ll pop into Ikea to check out the new decorations. Apparently they have some nice things this year.
Emma : Great! And in the afternoon we’ll all meet up to decorate. We’ll need to arrange some snacks and Christmas music!
Thomas : Uh, not Grandma’s Christmas carols, right? This year, let’s play something a bit more… bearable!
Sophie : *[laughing]* Okay, okay! We’ll make a modern playlist. Does that work for everyone?
Emma : Perfect! So it’s decided: Operation Christmas tree on Sunday afternoon!
Thomas : Okay, it’s a deal! I just hope that this time we won’t have an argument about who gets which ornaments…
Sophie : Oh, stop! We weren’t that bad! Right, who wants some tea? All this organising makes me thirsty!
