A dialogue about what to do when a ticket has been punched incorrectly

Sophie: Oui oui, heureusement !
Sophie: Vous croyez vraiment ?
On a eu plusieurs signalements aujourd’hui.
Sophie: Mon ticket d’achat ?
Thomas: Tiens, j’ai appris quelque chose aujourd’hui !

English translation

Sophie takes the tram to the city centre when, suddenly, she realises that her ticket has not been validated correctly by the machine. Panicked at the thought of receiving a fine, she asks Thomas, another passenger who seems to know public transport well, then speaks to the ticket inspector who has just boarded the tram.

Sophie: Oh no! Uh, excuse me, sir… My ticket wasn’t validated correctly by the machine!
Thomas: Oh really? What exactly happened?
Sophie: Well, I put my ticket in the machine as usual, but look… you can barely see the validation mark. It’s all blurry!
Thomas: Oh yes, that does happen sometimes when the machine is out of order or low on ink. You kept it, at least?
Sophie: Yes, yes, luckily! But I’m afraid that if a ticket inspector boards, he won’t believe me. What can I do?
Thomas: Listen, normally if you have the ticket in hand and explain the situation, it should be fine. Ticket inspectors see that every day, you know.
Sophie: Do you really think so? Because I’ve heard stories of people who have been fined even with a ticket…
Thomas: Look, actually… I think there’s a ticket inspector getting on. Do you see the man in uniform over there?
Sophie: Oh no! That’s exactly what I was afraid of! What am I going to tell him?
Ticket inspector: Hello, tickets, please!
Sophie: Uh… Hello, sir. Well, I have a little problem with my ticket…
Ticket inspector: What kind of problem, ma’am?
Sophie: Well, I validated my ticket when I got on, but the machine malfunctioned. Look, you can barely see the stamp.
Ticket inspector: Hmm… Indeed, it’s very hard to read. Which stop were you at when you got on?
Sophie: At République, about ten minutes ago. The machine was making a strange noise, by the way.
Thomas: Excuse me for butting in, but I saw this lady validate her ticket. Machine number 2 seemed to be malfunctioning.
Ticket inspector: Ah, that machine again! We’ve had several reports today. Ma’am, when did you buy this ticket?
Sophie: This morning, around 8:30, at the ticket machine at République station, actually.
Ticket inspector: Alright… The problem is I can’t really check the time of purchase on the ticket given the state of the stamp.
Sophie: But I’m not lying! I paid for my ticket like everyone else!
Thomas: Inspector, isn’t there a system to verify purchases made at the machines?
Ticket inspector: Yes, in theory… But it involves quite a few steps. Ma’am, did you keep your purchase ticket?
Sophie: My purchase ticket? Uh… no, I threw it away immediately after I took the transport ticket. Who keeps that?
Ticket inspector: Many people do, actually, to avoid this kind of situation. Listen, technically I should issue you a fine…
Sophie: What? That’s not fair! It’s not my fault your machine isn’t working properly!
Thomas: Wait, sir, she does have a ticket in her hand, and I can vouch that she validated it!
Ticket inspector: I understand your situation, but the rules are clear. However… since this is a recurring technical problem with this machine…
Sophie: So? What does that mean?
Ticket inspector: Well, as an exception, I’ll let it slide this time. But in the future, always keep your purchase ticket!
Sophie: Ah! Thank you very much, sir, you’re very understanding! I won’t forget, I promise!
Thomas: Great! You were lucky after all!
Ticket inspector: And above all, if a machine isn’t working properly, try the other one or report it to the driver immediately.
Sophie: Okay, I’ll be careful next time. By the way, how do you report a defective machine?
Ticket inspector: There’s a toll-free number posted in every carriage, or you can tell the driver. They pass it on immediately to the technical team.
Thomas: Hey, I learned something today! I didn’t know you could report that either.
Sophie: Anyway, thank you again, ticket inspector, and thank you to you too, sir, for your help!
Ticket inspector: You’re welcome, have a good trip, both of you!
Thomas: Well, you can breathe now! It all turned out well in the end.
Sophie: That was close! Next time I’ll definitely keep my receipt safe!
