A dialogue about a memorable holiday when everything went wrong

Thomas: Ah oui ! Le fameux Noël “parfait” de maman… *rire* Quelle catastrophe !
Sophie: Mais tu sais quoi ?
Sophie: Hein, tu as raison !
Thomas: Connaissant maman ? *rire* Elle va encore tout vouloir contrôler ! Mais bon, on sera là pour rattraper !

English translation

Sophie and Thomas, siblings in their thirties, meet at their parents’ house to reminisce about family memories. They think back to a Christmas a few years ago that was supposed to be perfect but turned into a real family disaster. Despite everything, that day became one of their most cherished memories.

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Do you remember that Christmas in 2019? The one when Mom had invited the whole extended family?
Thomas: Oh yes! Mom’s famous “perfect” Christmas… *laughs* What a disaster! But really, what a disaster!
Sophie: Uh… wait, are we talking about the same one? The one where Grandma Marguerite showed up with her new boyfriend?
Thomas: Exactly! Poor Mom, she had prepared so much… The embroidered tablecloths, Grandma’s china, the gourmet menu…
Sophie: Oh yeah, she’d been dreaming about that Christmas for months! You know how she is about keeping family traditions alive.
Thomas: And everything started to go off the rails first thing in the morning. Do you remember? Uncle Michel arriving two hours early…
Sophie: Oh yes! Mom was still in her robe! She was beside herself, poor thing.
Thomas: And then, uh… there was the turkey drama, huh!
Sophie: *bursts out laughing* Oh my, the turkey! Mom had put it in the oven at 6 a.m. so it would be perfect…
Thomas: Except Dad had tinkered with the oven the night before and it was running three times hotter!
Sophie: A charred turkey! Completely burnt! Mom burst into tears in front of everyone.
Thomas: And that’s when cousin Antoine came out with his famous: “Well, we’ll order pizzas!”
Sophie: *laughs* Mom’s look! If looks could kill… Antoine wouldn’t have survived!
Thomas: But wait, the worst hadn’t happened yet! There was the incident with the presents…
Sophie: Oh yes! *sighs* Poor little Emma… She had opened Aunt Sylvie’s present by mistake.
Thomas: And what was it again? Oh yes, the necklace for Grandma! Emma had put it on and refused to take it off.
Sophie: She was screaming like someone was being slaughtered! And Aunt Sylvie was panicking because she had nothing else…
Thomas: Luckily you came up with that brilliant idea to do a “magical swap” with Santa!
Sophie: Yeah, I had to save the situation! But honestly, I was totally winging it!
Thomas: And then, there was the big moment… Grandma’s arrival with Jean-Claude!
Sophie: *whispers* Poor Jean-Claude… 85 years old, deaf as a post, and talking politics!
Thomas: Dad trying to stay polite but clenching his fists… Uh, it was tense!
Sophie: And Grandma introducing us to her “fiancé”! At 82! Mom nearly choked on her champagne.
Thomas: The funniest thing was when Jean-Claude mistook Dad for his ex-husband!
Sophie: *laughing my head off* “So, Roger, still in plumbing?” Dad’s name is Daniel and he’s an accountant!
Thomas: And the grand finale… the power outage!
Sophie: Oh, would you believe it! Right at dessert time! The whole street went dark.
Thomas: We ended up eating the yule log by candlelight, like in the Middle Ages!
Sophie: But you know what? That’s when the magic happened…
Thomas: Yeah, it’s true! Everyone started telling stories, family anecdotes…
Sophie: Grandma told us about her childhood Christmases during the war… I was in tears.
Thomas: And Uncle Michel pulled out his guitar! We all sang together in the living room…
Sophie: Even Jean-Claude knew the words! *laughs* Well, more or less!
Thomas: It turned out to be the warmest Christmas we’ve ever had, after all.
Sophie: Exactly! Mom always says it’s when everything goes wrong that true bonds reveal themselves.
Thomas: And now, every Christmas someone brings that story out again! It’s become a family legend.
Sophie: See, you’re right! Last year, little Emma – who is now eight – asked, “Are we going to have another ‘disaster’ Christmas?”
Thomas: *smiles* In the end, traditions aren’t necessarily what we plan… They’re what happens to us!
Sophie: Oh, by the way, Mom is already preparing next Christmas… I hope she’s learned her lesson!
Thomas: Knowing Mom? *laughs* She’ll try to control everything again! But hey, we’ll be there to pick up the pieces!
