A conversation with a child after a lost match

Lucas : Bof… On a perdu. 3-1.
Sophie : Tiens !
Après mon but, on était à égalité 1-1. Mais Antoine a complètement craqué.
Sophie : Antoine ?
Sophie : Ah ! Je comprends mieux maintenant. Tu espérais te faire remarquer ?
Lucas : Pas seulement moi !
Sophie : Euh… excuse-moi mon chéri, tu as peut-être raison.
Sophie : Exactement ! Et c’est ça le plus important. Bon, et si on appelait papa pour lui raconter ton super but ?
Lucas : D’accord ! Et… euh, maman ?
Sophie : Oui mon chéri ?
Lucas : Merci de m’avoir écouté. Ça va mieux maintenant.
Sophie : De rien mon grand.

English translation

After an important regional football match, Lucas, 14, returns home visibly disappointed. His team lost 3-1 to their main rivals. His mother, Sophie, is waiting for him in the kitchen and immediately notices his downcast expression. She tries to comfort him and talk about what happened during the match.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Well, sweetheart, how did the match go? You look… uh, not very happy.
Lucas : Meh… We lost. 3-1. It was rubbish.
Sophie : Oh dear, I’m sorry. But hey, it’s only a game, you know. The important thing is that you did your best.
Lucas : You don’t understand, Mom! It was THE match of the year! Against Montpellier! And now we’re out of the regional championship.
Sophie : Oh? I thought you still had other matches…
Lucas : No! It was the quarter-finals! If we’d won, we’d have gone to the semis. Now it’s over, finished!
Sophie : Okay, I understand better now why you’re so disappointed. But tell me, what exactly happened?
Lucas : Everything went wrong right from the start. First, Tom was sick, so he couldn’t play. And then the referee… pfff! He was completely useless!
Sophie : The referee? What did he do?
Lucas : He gave us a totally unfair red card! Maxime just touched their striker and bam! Red card! So we ended up with ten against eleven.
Sophie : Oh darn! That’s really annoying. But even with ten players, you scored a goal, didn’t you?
Lucas : Yeah, I was the one who scored it, actually. A great volley! Even the opposing coach congratulated me afterwards.
Sophie : Oh, that’s great! See, you can be proud of yourself. And your teammates, how did they react?
Lucas : Well… that’s where it gets complicated. After my goal, we were tied 1-1. But Antoine completely lost it.
Sophie : Antoine? The captain? What happened to him?
Lucas : He argued with the referee, then with their players. He was beside himself! So he got a yellow card, then a second one. Another player down!
Sophie : Oh no! So you were down to nine?
Lucas : Exactly! And then, well… they scored two goals against us in ten minutes. There was nothing we could do.
Sophie : Listen, Lucas, I understand your disappointment. But you know, in sport as in life, there are ups and downs.
Lucas : Yeah… But Mom, you don’t get it! I worked all year for this! Every Wednesday, every Saturday! And on top of that…
Sophie : On top of what?
Lucas : Well, there were scouts in the stands! From Olympique de Marseille! Coach had told us before the match.
Sophie : Ah! I understand now. You were hoping to get noticed?
Lucas : Not just me! The whole team! It was our chance to maybe get into the youth academy!
Sophie : Oh, you didn’t tell me about that! That’s important, then.
Lucas : Yes, I did tell you! But you and Dad never listen when I talk about football!
Sophie : Uh… sorry, my dear, you might be right. We’re sometimes distracted. But tell me, even with the defeat, do you think your goal went unnoticed?
Lucas : I don’t know… Maybe. But, well, losing 3-1 doesn’t make a very good impression!
Sophie : Hmm, what if you called your coach? Maybe he’s spoken with those scouts?
Lucas : Do you think so? But he must be disappointed too. We really had a good team this year.
Sophie : Exactly! A good coach knows how to recognize individual qualities even in a team defeat.
Lucas : Yeah… maybe. Actually, he told us we’d played well despite everything. Especially when we were a man down.
Sophie : See! And it’s not the end of the world. You’re only 14 – you’ll have other opportunities!
Lucas : That’s what Dad always says: “You’ll see, next year…” But next year I’ll be in a different age group!
Sophie : It’s true, but you’ll also be stronger, more experienced. This defeat can also teach you things, can’t it?
Lucas : Hm… maybe. Anyway, I gave it my all. I can’t blame myself for that.
Sophie : Exactly! And that’s the most important thing. Well, what if we called Dad to tell him about your great goal?
Lucas : Okay! And… uh, Mom?
Sophie : Yes, sweetheart?
Lucas : Thanks for listening to me. I’m feeling better now.
Sophie : You’re welcome, kiddo. It’s nothing! Come on, go take a shower, and then we’ll order a pizza to cheer ourselves up!
Lucas : With pepperoni ?
Sophie : With whatever you want!
