A conversation with a child about their dreams for the future

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Alors ma chérie, tu y as réfléchi ?
Emma : Justement, j’aimerais bien devenir architecte d’intérieur !
Emma : Oh maman… Merci ! Mais j’ai encore une autre inquiétude…
Sophie : Laquelle ?
Emma : Et si je me trompais complètement ?
On pourrait y aller ensemble ?
Emma : T’as raison !

Sophie : So, sweetheart, have you thought about it? Next year you’ll have to choose your baccalauréat specialization…
Emma : Um… yeah, I actually think about it a lot. But it’s not easy, you know!
Sophie : I suspected as much. Tell me, what do you like most in your classes? What are you really passionate about?
Emma : Well, I love visual arts and literature. But, you know, Dad always says you can’t make a living from that…
Sophie : Ah, your father and his ideas! And you, what do you think? What do you see yourself doing later on?
Emma : I’d really like to become an interior designer! It combines art and something concrete, doesn’t it?
Sophie : Great! That’s a lovely job! Have you already looked into what studies you need to do?
Emma : Yes, a bit… You have to go to an art or architecture school. But uh… it’s really selective and it’s expensive…
Sophie : Hmmm, it’s true that financially, it could be complicated. But we’ll find solutions! There are scholarships, student loans…
Emma : Do you really think so? Because I’ve also thought about something else…
Sophie : Oh really? What is it?
Emma : Well, I could become a visual arts teacher. It’s a safer career option, and I love teaching!
Sophie : That’s an excellent idea too! By the way, do you remember when you used to give drawing lessons to your little cousin? You were fantastic!
Emma : Yes! That was great! But… uh… there’s one thing that’s worrying me…
Sophie : Tell me everything, sweetheart.
Emma : Actually, my math grades are really bad. And for architecture, you need them, right?
Sophie : That’s true… But you know what? We can sign you up for private tutoring this summer!
Emma : Would you do that? But that’ll cost an arm and a leg!
Sophie : Emma, your future is our priority! Your father and I are willing to make sacrifices.
Emma : Oh Mom… Thank you! But I still have another worry…
Sophie : Which one?
Emma : What if I’m completely wrong? What if in two years I want to do something else?
Sophie : My darling, it’s normal to have doubts! When I was your age, I wanted to be a veterinarian!
Emma : Oh really? And what made you change your mind?
Sophie : Well, I found out I couldn’t stand the sight of blood! So I decided to go into business.
Emma : And you don’t regret it?
Sophie : Not at all! I had a wonderful career, I met your father… Life sometimes has wonderful surprises in store for us!
Emma : That’s true… But still, I wouldn’t want to completely mess things up…
Sophie : Listen, what if we arranged meetings with professionals? You could visit architecture firms, meet professors…
Emma : Oh yes! That would be amazing! Do you know anyone in those fields?
Sophie : Uh… not directly, but Clara’s mom works in interior design. She could probably point us in the right direction!
Emma : Clara from my class?
Sophie : Exactly! I’ll call her this week. And there are also school open days!
Emma : Oh, I hadn’t thought of that! Could we go together?
Sophie : Of course! And even your father will come, you’ll see. Once he understands that you have a real project…
Emma : I hope so… Sometimes I feel like he doesn’t take me seriously.
Sophie : Don’t be mistaken! He’s just worried about your future. But when he sees how motivated you are…
Emma : Okay, so what do we do? Which subjects should I take next year?
Sophie : To keep all options open, I’d say visual arts, mathematics and… maybe physics and chemistry?
Emma : Ugh! Mathematics AND physics? That’s going to be a nightmare!
Sophie : Come on, stay strong! With motivation and some tutoring, you’ll make it!
Emma : You’re right! By the way, thanks, Mom… for supporting me like that.
Sophie : Of course, sweetheart. We believe in you, and the main thing is that you’re fulfilled in life!
Emma : Okay, now I have to tell Dad about this… Can you help me?
Sophie : You can count on me! We’ll talk to him about it tonight after dinner, okay?
Emma : Deal! Okay, I’m going to study my math… I might as well start right away!
