A conversation about who to invite and who not to invite to a family event

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Bon, on doit vraiment finaliser cette liste aujourd’hui, hein. On a déjà reporté ça trois fois !
Marc: Ouais, tu as raison. Euh… on en est où exactement ? Combien de personnes pour l’instant ?
Sophie: Ben, j’ai compté hier soir… on est déjà à 180 invités et on avait dit maximum 150, tu te rappelles ?
Marc: Zut !
Sophie: Elle a changé !
Sophie: Attends, mes grands-parents…
Marc: T’as raison, on va lui dire qu’il vient seul.

Sophie and Marc are preparing for their wedding, which will take place in two months. They are sitting in their living room with the guest list and have to make difficult decisions about who to invite to their big day. The budget and limited space force them to make delicate choices, especially when it comes to family.

DIALOGUE

Sophie: Okay, we really need to finalize this list today, right? We’ve already postponed it three times!
Marc: Yeah, you’re right. Uh… where are we exactly? How many people so far?
Sophie: Well, I counted last night… we’re already up to 180 guests and we’d agreed on a maximum of 150, remember?
Marc: Darn! How did we end up like this? We’ll have to cut about thirty people, then…
Sophie: It’s not easy, but… For starters, your cousins from Lyon – you never see them. Maybe we could…
Marc: Oh no! My cousins are coming! Aunt Brigitte would kill me if I didn’t invite them. And your uncle Patrick with his whole tribe? How many would that be?
Sophie: Patrick, his wife and their four children… Six people. But Marc, he’s my godfather after all!
Marc: Great, another complication! Well, what if we didn’t invite children under 12? That would free up quite a few spots.
Sophie: Uh, you’re joking, I hope? My little niece Léa is eight and she’s thrilled to be our flower girl!
Marc: Okay, okay… And my coworkers from the office? I said they could all come with their partners.
Sophie: Oh? Exactly how many colleagues do you have?
Marc: Well… about fifteen including partners. But Sophie, I work with them every day!
Sophie: Fifteen?! Marc, we can’t invite people we see at work and not my cousin Émilie – I adore her!
Marc: Your cousin Émilie, the one who always makes a scene when she’s drunk?
Sophie: She’s changed! And anyway, she’s part of the family. Unlike your boss, who you hate…
Marc: Exactly – it’s just office politics to invite my boss. If I don’t, it’ll be awkward at the office afterwards.
Sophie: How about we make two lists: the must-invites and the “if there’s room” ones – what do you think?
Marc: Good idea! So, must-invites: our parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents…
Sophie: Wait, my grandparents… My grandmother will come, but my grandfather, um… he can’t handle large gatherings anymore since his illness.
Marc: Ah, I didn’t know. Well, my grandparents are still angry with my Aunt Sylvie.
Sophie: Why are they angry again?
Marc: It’s an inheritance thing… My grandmother absolutely refuses to be in the same room as Sylvie.
Sophie: Oh dear! And here I was thinking my family was complicated! What do we do then?
Marc: Well, either we invite my grandparents without my aunt, or the other way around. Or we explain the situation and see…
Sophie: What? You want to ask them to put their feud aside for our wedding?
Marc: Why not? Sometimes weddings reconcile people!
Sophie: Or it could create even more problems… Right, let’s change the subject. And your best man, can he bring his new girlfriend?
Marc: Julien? Uh, what new girlfriend? He gets a new one every two weeks!
Sophie: Exactly! If he shows up with someone we’ve never met…
Marc: You’re right, we’ll tell him to come alone. And your university friends who now live abroad?
Sophie: They told me they’d make the effort to come. I’d be so upset if they weren’t there!
Marc: Okay, but then who do we cut? We really have to trim down that damn list!
Sophie: What if… what if we had a more intimate wedding after all? Like 100 people maximum?
Marc: Would you be okay with that? We had said we wanted to celebrate with everyone…
Sophie: Yeah, but it’s become a real headache! The smaller it is, the less stress we have, right?
Marc: Great! So shall we start the list again with just close family and best friends?
Sophie: Perfect! That way we’ll have a bigger budget for the food and music!
Marc: And above all, we’ll avoid problems with Grandma and Aunt Sylvie!
Sophie: Ah! You’re not inviting them then?
Marc: Um… well, I still need to think about it…
