A conversation about when advice is help and when it’s imposing

Tu as l’air préoccupée…
Ça m’a blessée, tu sais.
Camille : Oh… Je ne me rendais pas compte. Excuse-moi, Sophie.
Sophie : Elles concernent surtout notre avenir.
Tu ne me dis pas quoi faire, tu me fais réfléchir.
Sophie : Chouette !

English translation

In a Parisian café, Sophie meets up with her friend Camille to talk about a personal problem. Sophie is going through a difficult time with her boyfriend and is seeking support, but she begins to feel overwhelmed by the repeated advice from those around her.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Hi Camille! Thanks for coming, I really needed to talk to someone.
Camille : Hey, beautiful! Of course, I’m here for you. You look worried… Is it because of Julien again?
Sophie : Um… yes and no. Well, it’s complicated. The problem is that everyone is constantly giving me advice!
Camille : Really? How so?
Sophie : Well, ever since I told my mother and my sister about our fights, they won’t stop telling me what I should do. “Leave him!”, “He doesn’t deserve you!”, “You should be firmer with him!”
Camille : Hmm, I see… They’re worried about you, that’s normal, isn’t it?
Sophie : Yes, I know they mean well, but this is getting suffocating! Yesterday my sister even sent me articles on “how to recognize a toxic man.” I can’t take it anymore!
Camille : Oof… That can definitely be overwhelming. But tell me, how do you really feel about your relationship with Julien?
Sophie : That’s exactly the problem! I feel like I don’t even know what I really think anymore. With all this conflicting advice…
Camille : Conflicting?
Sophie : My mother says I should be more patient, my sister says I should dump him, and my coworker thinks all men are like that! Each of them is projecting her own experiences onto my situation.
Camille : Oh, that’s interesting what you’re saying. Do you feel like they’re not really listening to you?
Sophie : Exactly! Sometimes I feel like they’ve already decided for me before I’ve even finished explaining. And you do the same, by the way!
Camille : Me? How so?
Sophie : Well, last time you told me I should sign up for dating sites “just in case”. That hurt me, you know.
Camille : Oh… I didn’t realize. I’m sorry, Sophie. I thought I was helping you by giving you options.
Sophie : I know you want to help me, but sometimes I just need someone to listen to me without judging me or telling me what to do. Is that so hard to understand?
Camille : No, not at all. You’re right, I acted like everyone else. Um… tell me, what would really help you?
Sophie : Well, for starters, you ask me questions instead of giving me ready-made solutions! Like you just did, by the way.
Camille : Okay. So… how do you feel when you’re with Julien, without thinking about what other people say?
Sophie : That’s better! Uh… Actually, I’m happy with him most of the time. We have our problems, sure, but what couple doesn’t?
Camille : And those arguments you were talking about?
Sophie : They’re mainly about our future. He wants to move to the South, I prefer to stay in Paris. It’s complicated but not insurmountable.
Camille : I see. And what are you going to do to deal with all that unsolicited advice?
Sophie : Good question! I think I’ll be clearer with my family. I’ll tell them I appreciate their support but that I need some space to think.
Camille : That’s a good idea. And if they insist?
Sophie : I’ll tell them that too much advice defeats the purpose, right? When we’re bombarded with opinions, we can’t hear our own inner voice anymore.
Camille : That’s very true. By the way, does Julien know you’re going through this period of questioning?
Sophie : No, not really. I’m afraid he’ll feel attacked if I tell him my family criticizes him.
Camille : Hmm… Don’t you think it might help him understand why you’re tense right now?
Sophie : Oh, that’s an interesting perspective! You’re not telling me what to do, you’re making me think. That’s exactly what I needed!
Camille : Ah, I’m beginning to understand the difference! It’s true that it’s more respectful of your ability to make your own decisions.
Sophie : There you go! Real support is trusting the other person, not deciding for them. Even if it’s done out of love.
Camille : Thanks for helping me see that, Sophie. I think I do that with other friends too… Oh no, I need to rethink how I help!
Sophie : Don’t worry, I also have a tendency to give unsolicited advice sometimes! The important thing is to be aware of it.
Camille : Okay, so now I’m asking you: what would be good for you for the rest of this afternoon?
Sophie : Great! I’d like us to talk about something else, to take our minds off things. And you, how’s it going with your new job?
Camille : With pleasure! And I promise, if you want advice, just ask!
Sophie : It’s a deal! Come on, tell me everything…
