A conversation about what this relationship taught us

Thomas : Au moins, tu l’admets maintenant.
Zut, ça me rendait dingue !
Sophie : Tu as raison.
Thomas : Exactement ! Et maintenant, dans ma nouvelle relation…
Sophie : Attends, quoi ? Tu as quelqu’un d’autre ?
Thomas : Euh… oui, depuis deux mois. Je pensais que tu le savais ? Emma ne t’a pas dit ?
Sophie : Non !
Thomas : Ah, ça explique pourquoi tu paniquais quand on parlait d’emménager ensemble !
Ça me complexait énormément.
Au final, notre relation m’a appris à mieux me connaître.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Hi Thomas… It feels strange to see you again like this.
Thomas : Hi Sophie. Uh… me too, I have to admit. Thanks for agreeing to meet.
Sophie : Well, I thought it was important, you know. We broke up a bit… how to put it… in a bit of confusion.
Thomas : Yes, that’s true. We said some unkind things to each other. I mean, we were both so angry.
Sophie : Exactly! And now that I’ve taken a step back, I realize we shared some wonderful moments together.
Thomas : Oh really? You actually think that? I feel like we were arguing all the time toward the end.
Sophie : We definitely had our problems… But tell me, what did you take away from our relationship?
Thomas : Well, uh… I learned that I’m a very possessive person. Too possessive, even.
Sophie : Funny you say that! I realized that I tended to keep everything to myself, not to express my feelings.
Thomas : Oh yes, that’s true! Do you remember when you blamed me for never knowing what you were thinking?
Sophie : Yes, and you were right. I’ve always had trouble with that. Even as a child, my mother would say: “Sophie, tell us what’s wrong!”
Thomas : At least you admit it now. I couldn’t understand why you were distant sometimes.
Sophie : And you, your jealous fits… Damn, it drove me crazy! Even when I was talking with my colleague Marc…
Thomas : Oh man, Marc! Don’t even get me started… I was completely paranoid. But you know, I’ve been in therapy since then.
Sophie : Really? Great! How’s it going?
Thomas : Well, it’s helping me a lot. I’ve figured out where my jealousy comes from. It actually comes from my father.
Sophie : Oh really? You’d never told me about that…
Thomas : That’s exactly the problem! The two of us didn’t communicate enough about the important things.
Sophie : You’re right. We talked about everything and nothing, but never about our fears, our doubts…
Thomas : Exactly! And now, in my new relationship…
Sophie : Wait, what? Are you seeing someone else?
Thomas : Uh… yes, for two months. I thought you knew? Didn’t Emma tell you?
Sophie : No! Emma didn’t tell me anything at all! And here I was thinking that… well, that maybe we could…
Thomas : Oh, Sophie… I’m sorry, I thought it was clear we were just seeing each other to talk.
Sophie : Yes, yes, of course! It’s just that… well, never mind. Tell me about this girl then.
Thomas : Are you sure? I don’t want to hurt you…
Sophie : No, it’s fine. On the contrary, I’m interested to know how you’re applying what you’ve learned.
Thomas : Well, with Claire, I’m trying to be more open. When I feel jealousy rising, I tell her about it directly.
Sophie : And does that work?
Thomas : Yeah, for now, yes! And she’s very communicative. That helps me a lot.
Sophie : That’s great, Thomas. I’ve learned things about myself too.
Thomas : Tell me!
Sophie : I’ve realized that I’m afraid of commitment. Not of you specifically, but of commitment in general.
Thomas : Ah, that explains why you panicked when we talked about moving in together!
Sophie : That’s it! And also, I’ve realized that I was constantly comparing myself to other couples.
Thomas : How so?
Sophie : Well, you know, your friends Paul and Lucie who seemed so perfect… It made me feel extremely insecure.
Thomas : But Sophie, they broke up last month!
Sophie : Seriously? The perfect couple?
Thomas : That’s right! It shows you never really know what’s going on with other people.
Sophie : That’s true. In the end, our relationship helped me get to know myself better.
Thomas : Same for me. And even though it didn’t work out between us, I don’t regret anything.
Sophie : Me neither. We had some beautiful moments, and now we’re each growing on our own.
Thomas : Exactly. And who knows? Maybe we could be friends one day?
Sophie : Maybe… Let’s let time take its course. For now, this conversation has been good for me.
Thomas : Me too, Sophie. Thanks for coming.
