Sophie: Il faut qu’on s’organise mieux.
Sophie: Justement !
Allez, on s’y met ? On range tout ça intelligemment ?
Sophie: D’accord !
English translation
Marc and Sophie, a couple married for five years, are returning from a large supermarket with an enormous amount of groceries. They realize they’ve once again bought too much food and begin to discuss their tendency to waste food.
DIALOGUE
Marc: Well then, uh… where do we put all this? The fridge is already bursting at the seams!
Sophie: Oh dear, I think we’ve messed up again… Look at all those yogurts! We bought twelve pots when we still had six.
Marc: Oh darn, I completely forgot! And those bananas… we already have some on the counter that are starting to go black.
Sophie: It’s always the same with us. As soon as we set foot in the supermarket, we lose our heads. We can’t resist the deals every time!
Marc: Yeah, but admit it-three packs of ham for the price of two was tempting, wasn’t it!
Sophie: Maybe tempting, but we’re just going to throw half of it away again! Do you remember last time? We had to throw away two expired steaks and all that moldy cheese…
Marc: Uh… yeah, that’s true. It really upset me. And my wallet too, for that matter!
Sophie: We’re wasting at least 30 euros a week, Marc! It’s crazy! In a month, that’s over 100 euros going straight in the trash.
Marc: Wait, wait… You’re exaggerating a bit, aren’t you? 30 euros, are you sure?
Sophie: I’ve done the math! The rotten vegetables, the expired dairy, the stale bread we forget in the cupboard… By the way, yesterday’s was as hard as a rock!
Marc: Okay, fine, we have a problem. But what do we do? Our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs!
Sophie: We need to get better organized. For starters, we could make a shopping list and stick to it, don’t you think?
Marc: Yeah… but we already make lists! The thing is, once we’re there, we see lots of other stuff…
Sophie: Exactly! What if we did our grocery shopping online? That way, there’d be no temptation!
Marc: Uh, meh… I like choosing my fruits and vegetables myself. You can’t see the quality online.
Sophie: So what do you suggest? Because honestly, this can’t go on any longer!
Marc: What if we went more often but bought less each time? Instead of one big grocery run a week…
Sophie: Mmm… not a bad idea! Two small shopping trips would prevent us from buying fresh produce that sits around for too long.
Marc: Exactly! And we could check the fridge before we head out. Right now I just noticed we have three jars of mustard!
Sophie: Three jars? Oh, then that must be the one I just bought… And that mayonnaise, we already had that too!
Marc: See! We’d better take photos of the fridge with our phones before we head out.
Sophie: Ha! Good idea! That way, no more excuses for double-ups. But tell me, what are we going to do with everything we bought today?
Marc: Well… we’ll try to use everything up. The overripe bananas, we can make banana bread, right?
Sophie: Yes, and the vegetables that are starting to wilt, we can turn them into soup! My grandmother always used to do that.
Marc: Great! And what about the yogurts, can we give a few to the neighbors? The Duponts are always nice…
Sophie: Good idea! And in the future, we’ll check expiration dates more carefully before buying. Sometimes we just mindlessly grab the products at the front.
Marc: That’s true, you have to dig around a bit to find the ones with the latest expiration dates… Come on, shall we get started? Shall we put all this away smartly?
Sophie: Okay! And let’s write our resolutions down somewhere, so we don’t forget next time!
Marc: Perfect! No more waste! Well… I hope so, right?
Sophie: Come on, let’s start with this fridge. We need to make room for our new groceries!
