A conversation about the feeling of longing and distance

DIALOGUE

Léa : Salut mon cœur ! Ça fait du bien de te voir, même si c’est juste sur l’écran…
Thomas : Salut ma puce ! Tu m’as manqué aujourd’hui. Comment ça s’est passé, tes cours ?
Léa : Bof, ça va… Mais j’ai eu un coup de blues en sortant de la fac. J’ai vu un couple qui se tenait la main et… euh… ça m’a rappelé à quel point tu me manques.
Thomas : Ah ma chérie… Moi aussi tu me manques terriblement.
Léa : Bien sûr qu’on s’aime !
Thomas : Ah bon ? Tu me parles d’un autre mec maintenant ?
Léa : Mais non ! Laisse-moi finir !
Thomas : Ouf, tu m’as fait peur !
Tu as pensé à quoi ?
Léa : Arrête, tu vas me faire pleurer !
Ça me ferait tellement plaisir ! Tu pourrais rencontrer mes colocs, on pourrait visiter la ville…
Thomas : Parfait ! Tu vois, on va y arriver.
Gros bisous virtuels !

The geographical separation is beginning to weigh on their relationship and they must face the challenges of being apart.

DIALOGUE

Léa : Hi, my love! It’s so good to see you, even if it’s just on the screen…
Thomas : Hey, sweetheart! I missed you today. How did your classes go?
Léa : Meh, I’m okay… But I felt a bit down leaving uni. I saw a couple holding hands and… um… it reminded me how much I miss you.
Thomas : Ah, my darling… I miss you terribly too. This morning I almost called you to say good morning, but then I realized it was too early in Lyon.
Léa : Huh? No, there’s no time difference between Lyon and Bordeaux!
Thomas : Oh yes, sorry, I’m tired… I’m mixing it up with my sister who’s in Canada. You see, my mind’s elsewhere at the moment.
Léa : Well, that’s exactly the problem! We’re starting to have separate lives, our own routines… Sometimes I feel like we know each other less and less.
Thomas : Don’t say that! Okay, it’s true it’s not easy every day, but we love each other, don’t we?
Léa : Of course we love each other! But love isn’t always enough… You know, last night I went out for a drink with my roommates and there was this really nice guy…
Thomas : Oh? You’re talking to me about another guy now?
Léa : No, no! Let me finish! I meant that I realized it felt weird to talk to someone face-to-face, you know? I’m used to only talking through a screen now.
Thomas : Phew, you scared me! Me too, actually – sometimes I feel disconnected from reality. At work, my coworkers tease me because I’m always looking at my phone.
Léa : That’s exactly it! And the worst is when we can’t get in touch… This afternoon, your phone kept ringing with no answer. I imagined the worst!
Thomas : Darn, I was in a meeting! I should’ve warned you… What did you imagine?
Léa : Uh… well, that you might have been with someone else, or that you were fed up with this situation…
Thomas : Léa! How can you think that? I would never do that to you!
Léa : I know, but distance makes you paranoid… We lose our bearings, we don’t share everyday life anymore.
Thomas : It’s true it’s hard not being able to hold you when you’re feeling bad…
Léa : Exactly! And there are all those little moments we miss: having coffee together in the morning, telling each other about our day when we get home…
Thomas : I miss cuddling in front of a movie on Sunday afternoons so much…
Léa : Stop, you’re going to make me cry! Okay, so what do we do then? Because right now, I feel like we’re surviving our relationship rather than living it.
Thomas : Honestly? I feel that sometimes too… But it’s temporary, right? In six months, I might get transferred.
Léa : Maybe, maybe… And what if it doesn’t happen? Are we going to keep going on like this for years?
Thomas : No, of course not! Listen, what if we set some goals? Like seeing each other every two weeks instead of once a month?
Léa : Yeah, that would be lovely! And we could do more things together long-distance. Like watching movies at the same time, for example.
Thomas : Good idea! And could I come see you next weekend? I’d love to see what your new life in Lyon is like.
Léa : Oh yes! I’d be so happy! You could meet my roommates, we could explore the city…
Thomas : Perfect! See, we’ll get through it. It’s just a rough patch.
Léa : I hope so… In any case, it feels good to talk about it frankly. I was afraid you wouldn’t understand.
Thomas : Oh, come on! We’re in the same boat, darling. The important thing is that we stick together… well, figuratively speaking!
Léa : Ha ha, very funny! Okay, shall we say tomorrow evening for our daily call?
Thomas : Count on me! And Léa… I love you so much, despite the distance.
Léa : Me too, my darling. See you tomorrow! Sweet dreams.
Thomas : You too, sweetheart. Big virtual kisses!
