A conversation about how you can ask for help without shame

DIALOGUE

Camille : Sophie ! Ça fait plaisir de te voir ! Comment tu vas ?
Sophie : Salut Camille… Ça va, ça va… enfin, tu sais…
Camille : Hein ? Tu as l’air bizarre aujourd’hui.
Camille : Ah bon ? Raconte-moi ce qui t’arrive. Tu me fais peur là !
Camille : Ma pauvre ! Tu n’as pas à avoir honte !
Camille : Zut ! C’est grave alors… Tu as pensé à demander de l’aide ?
Camille : Mais enfin Sophie ! Tes parents t’adorent !
Camille : Mais tu n’as pas échoué !
Mais j’ai peur qu’ils me jugent.
Camille : Sophie, regarde-moi.
Sophie : Euh… oui, vaguement. Il y a deux ans, c’est ça ?
Camille : Exactement !
Sophie : Hm…
Tu m’as donné du courage !
Camille : Chouette !

DIALOGUE

Camille : Sophie! It’s great to see you! How are you?
Sophie : Hi Camille… I’m okay, I’m okay… well, you know…
Camille : Huh? You seem off today. What’s going on?
Sophie : No, no, nothing special… Just a little tired, that’s all.
Camille : Come on, Sophie, we’ve known each other for fifteen years! I can tell that something’s bothering you.
Sophie : Uh… well, it’s complicated. I wouldn’t want to bother you with my problems.
Camille : Bother you? Are you kidding! Are we friends or not?
Sophie : Yes, of course… But I’m ashamed, you know. I feel like I’m useless.
Camille : Oh? Tell me what’s going on. You’re scaring me!
Sophie : I lost my job three weeks ago. And since then, I’ve been really struggling.
Camille : Oh my goodness! Why didn’t you tell me sooner?
Sophie : Because… I felt so humiliated. And I thought I’d quickly find another job.
Camille : Oh, poor thing! You don’t have to be ashamed! It happens to everyone, you know.
Sophie : Yeah… The problem is I can’t pay my rent anymore. I’m in a really difficult situation.
Camille : Oh no! That’s serious… Have you thought about asking for help?
Sophie : Who? My parents? Can you imagine their faces? “Our 32-year-old daughter who can’t fend for herself…”
Camille : But come on, Sophie! Your parents adore you! They’d surely be willing to help you.
Sophie : I don’t know… I’m having such a hard time admitting that I’ve failed.
Camille : But you haven’t failed! You were laid off because of the restructuring, it’s different!
Sophie : Yeah, but still… Asking for money at 32 is embarrassing, isn’t it?
Camille : Listen, would you rather end up on the street than swallow your pride?
Sophie : No, of course… But I’m afraid they’ll judge me.
Camille : Sophie, look at me. Do you remember when my brother had problems with his company?
Sophie : Uh… yes, vaguely. That was two years ago, right?
Camille : Exactly! He had to ask the whole family for help. At first, he was mortified.
Sophie : And then?
Camille : Well, everyone pitched in! And today he’s doing very well. He even told us it had strengthened our family ties.
Sophie : Really? I didn’t know it was that serious for him.
Camille : You see! Even he didn’t dare talk about it. But once he took the plunge, things worked out.
Sophie : Hm… Maybe you’re right. But where should I start?
Camille : For starters, you can accept my help. I can lend you enough to pay your rent this month.
Sophie : Oh no, Camille! I can’t accept it! It’s too much!
Camille : And why not? You’d do the same for me, wouldn’t you?
Sophie : Of course I would, but…
Camille : So stop with the “buts”! That’s what friendship’s for!
Sophie : Are you sure? I’ll pay you back as soon as possible, I promise!
Camille : I don’t doubt it for a second! And about your parents, do you want me to come with you?
Sophie : No, it’ll be fine… I think I’ll call them tonight. You gave me the courage!
Camille : Great! You’ll see, they’ll be pleased that you trust them.
Sophie : Thank you, Camille… I don’t know what I’d do without you! I was really silly to shut myself away like that.
Camille : Come on, let’s not talk about it anymore! Now we’re going to celebrate your new attitude with a nice dessert!
Sophie : Oh, that’s an excellent idea! And this time, it’s my treat… well, next month!
Camille : It’s a deal! And you know what? My cousin is looking for someone at his agency. I can talk to him about you if you want.
Sophie : Oh my, I really should have talked to you sooner! Thanks for everything!
