“You didn’t take out the trash again” – a minor conflict about responsibilities

Sophie : Une liste ? Thomas, on a 28 ans ! On n’est plus des gamins !
Thomas : Justement !
Thomas : Bon, tu as raison. Qu’est-ce qu’on fait maintenant ?
Sophie : Maintenant ?
Sophie : Un dimanche ? Elle est fermée ! Franchement, parfois je me demande…

This dialogue takes place in a Parisian apartment on a Sunday morning. Sophie and Thomas, a couple who have been living together for two years, have a small argument about household chores. Sophie is frustrated because Thomas has once again forgotten to take out the trash, and this repeated neglect is beginning to create tensions in their everyday life.

DIALOGUE

Sophie : Thomas! Can you tell me why the bins are still in the kitchen?
Thomas : Uh… the bins? Oh shoot, I completely forgot!
Sophie : Again! This is the third week in a row you’ve forgotten to take them out on Saturday night!
Thomas : Well, listen, my mind was elsewhere yesterday… We had that dinner at your parents’ and…
Sophie : Oh no, don’t blame my parents! The problem is that you never think about the household chores.
Thomas : Huh? What do you mean I never think about it? I do the dishes, I vacuum…
Sophie : Yes, but only when I remind you! I’m not your mother, Thomas.
Thomas : Okay, fine, I admit I forget sometimes, but to go so far as to say that…
Sophie : Sometimes? SOMETIMES? You’re joking, I hope! And the washing machine that’s been overflowing for a week?
Thomas : Ah… um… I thought you were going to take care of it.
Sophie : Of course! Because “Madam” takes care of everything! And the fridge that needs cleaning? And the bathroom?
Thomas : Well, speaking of the bathroom! Your beauty products are all over the place!
Sophie : My products? That’s the problem, according to you? Not the fact that you leave your dirty socks on the floor?
Thomas : Okay, let’s calm down a bit, shall we? We’re not going to argue about silly things…
Sophie : Silly? You call that silly? Living in a clean apartment is silly?
Thomas : No, that’s not what I meant… Listen, I admit I have my flaws.
Sophie : Oh yeah? Are you going to do anything about it, or just admit it?
Thomas : Well… what do you suggest? Shall we make a list of household chores?
Sophie : A list? Thomas, we’re 28! We’re not kids anymore!
Thomas : Exactly! So explain to me how we can get better organized!
Sophie : It’s simple: you take responsibility! You don’t need me to tell you what to do!
Thomas : Okay, but sometimes I don’t even notice that it’s dirty or that it needs doing…
Sophie : What do you mean you don’t see it? The overflowing bins – you don’t see them?
Thomas : Yes, but… uh… I always tell myself I’ll do it later and then I forget.
Sophie : Well, that’s the problem! “Later” doesn’t exist!
Thomas : Okay, you’re right. What do we do now?
Sophie : Now? The garbage collectors already came! We’re going to have to keep these bins until next Saturday!
Thomas : Ah shit… sorry about the language. I hadn’t realized.
Sophie : And what’s more, I’ve invited my sister to lunch! Can you imagine the smell in the kitchen?
Thomas : Your sister? The one who always criticizes our apartment?
Sophie : She doesn’t criticize, she just makes… constructive remarks.
Thomas : Constructive, my eye! Last time she said our fridge smelled funny!
Sophie : Because you’d left a yogurt that had been expired for three weeks!
Thomas : Okay, okay, okay… what are we doing for today? Can I take the trash down to the basement?
Sophie : The basement? Are you crazy? It’s going to stink up the whole building!
Thomas : So do we put them on the balcony?
Sophie : Thomas… think for two minutes! In this heat?
Thomas : Uh… could I take them straight to the recycling center?
Sophie : On a Sunday? It’s closed! Honestly, sometimes I wonder…
Thomas : Alright, I’ve got an idea! I’ll clean the whole apartment before your sister arrives!
Sophie : Clean everything? In two hours? You’re dreaming!
Thomas : Well… we can try! Come on, give me a chance!
Sophie : Alright, but next time you forget the trash, we’re going to have a serious talk!
Thomas : I promise! And I’ll set an alarm on my phone so I won’t forget again!
Sophie : An alarm… why didn’t I think of that sooner! Alright, back to work now!
Thomas : Thanks, sweetheart… and sorry about all that. I’ll be more careful, I promise.
Sophie : You better! Come on, start with the kitchen, I’ll take care of the bathroom!
