The student explains the delay of homework

Mme Dubois : Ah bon ? Toi qui es d’habitude si consciencieux ! Qu’est-ce qui s’est passé ?
Lucas : C’est assez compliqué, en fait. Vendredi soir, mon ordinateur portable a planté complètement.
Lucas : Promis, Madame !

English translation

In the classroom of Lycée Victor Hugo, it’s the beginning of the French literature lesson. Madame Dubois, an experienced teacher, takes attendance and asks the students to take out their assignments on the analysis of Camus’s “L’Étranger.” Lucas, a final-year student who is usually serious, finds himself in a delicate situation: he hasn’t finished his assignment on time. He must explain to his teacher the reasons for this delay, hoping to obtain an extension.

DIALOGUE

Mrs Dubois : All right, take out your analyses on “The Stranger”, please. I hope you all worked well this weekend.
Lucas : Uh… Mrs Dubois? Could I speak to you for a second?
Mrs Dubois : Yes, Lucas, what’s the matter? You don’t look yourself today.
Lucas : Well, actually… I have a bit of a problem with my assignment. I haven’t quite finished it.
Mrs Dubois : Oh? You who are usually so conscientious! What happened?
Lucas : It’s quite complicated, actually. Friday night, my laptop completely crashed. I had already written half of my analysis on it.
Mrs Dubois : Oh, that’s annoying! But you could have written it by hand, couldn’t you?
Lucas : I actually tried! But on Saturday morning my little sister fell ill and my parents had to take her to the emergency room.
Mrs Dubois : Oh dear, I hope it’s nothing serious?
Lucas : No, luckily. A nasty bout of gastroenteritis, but he’s better now. The problem is that I had to look after my little brother all day.
Mrs Dubois : I see… And Sunday then?
Lucas : Sunday, I tried to get back to it, but honestly, I was exhausted. And then, uh… I realized I’d misunderstood part of the instructions.
Mrs Dubois : What do you mean by that?
Lucas : Well, I thought we only had to analyze the first three chapters, but when I reread it, I saw that we had to study the whole first part of the book.
Mrs Dubois : That’s odd. The instructions were clear though: “Analyze the first part of The Stranger, focusing on Meursault’s psychological development.”
Lucas : Uh, yes… Actually, I think I mixed it up with the history assignment we had last week.
Mrs Dubois : Alright, I see. And where exactly are you with your work?
Lucas : I’ve written the introduction and started the first part of the analysis. I’ve still got quite a lot of work to do, though.
Mrs Dubois : Hmm… Usually, I don’t accept late assignments, you know that.
Lucas : I know, Ma’am. But this is really exceptional! Usually, I always turn in my homework on time.
Mrs Dubois : It’s true, your academic record is impeccable. But how can I be sure that you’re telling the truth?
Lucas : Well, you can ask my parents if you want! Or I can show you my broken laptop…
Mrs Dubois : No, no, that won’t be necessary. I trust you. But tell me, how long would you need to finish?
Lucas : If you give me until Wednesday, I can turn in a really well-done assignment. I promise!
Mrs Dubois : Wednesday… That already brings us to next week. And I had planned to grade all the assignments this weekend.
Lucas : Oh darn, I hadn’t thought of that… Would Tuesday evening be okay?
Mrs Dubois : Listen, Lucas, exceptionally I’m willing to grant you an extension until Tuesday at 6 p.m. But you must send it to me by email, okay?
Lucas : Great! Thank you so much, Mrs Dubois! You’re amazing!
Mrs Dubois : Don’t think this is a favor! I’ll be all the more demanding about the quality of your work.
Lucas : Of course, I understand. I’ll really apply myself, I promise.
Mrs Dubois : And in the future, try to get better organized. You could make regular backups of your assignments, for example.
Lucas : Yes, you’re right. I’ve learned my lesson! I’ll buy a USB flash drive today.
Mrs Dubois : Very well. Now return to your seat and take out your book. We’re going to start with a discussion about each other’s homework.
Lucas : Okay. And thanks again for your understanding!
Mrs Dubois : You’re welcome. But don’t let it happen again, okay!
Lucas : I promise, Mrs Dubois!
