Clara : *montant* Pardon, excusez-moi…
Clara : Ouf ! On a réussi à monter. Merci pour vos conseils !
M. Dubois : De rien !
Bon, on arrive à Bellecour. Je descends. Bonne chance pour votre examen !
Clara : Merci beaucoup !

The scene takes place at a very busy bus stop in downtown Lyon, on a Tuesday morning around 8:30. Clara, a 22-year-old student, is waiting for bus 38 to go to university. The bus that arrives is packed and she hesitates to board. She speaks to Mr. Dubois, a regular public-transport user who knows the schedules well, and to the driver to obtain information about the frequency and how crowded the next buses will be.
DIALOGUE
Clara : Excuse me, sir, um… do you take this line often?
Mr. Dubois : Oh yes, every morning for fifteen years! Why, do you have a problem?
Clara : Well, look at this bus… it’s completely packed! Do you know if the next one will be less crowded?
Mr. Dubois : Hmm, it depends… At this time of day it’s always a nightmare. But how long until the next one arrives?
Clara : According to the display, in twelve minutes. But I have an exam at 9:15, so…
The driver : *from his seat* Miss! If you’re getting on, hurry up! I’ve got a schedule to keep.
Clara : Wait! Will the next bus be less crowded?
The driver : Uh… hard to say. Usually around 8:45 it calms down a bit. But you can never be sure.
Mr. Dubois : Honestly, I wouldn’t get on that. We’re packed in like sardines!
Clara : You’re right, but if I wait and the next one is just as crowded? I’ll be late!
The driver : Listen, on that bus there’s still some room at the back. It’s not comfortable, but…
Mr. Dubois : Mm… *skeptical* At the back, maybe, but good luck getting off afterwards!
Clara : That’s true! Which stop do you get off at?
Mr. Dubois : Bellecour, like half the people. It’ll clear out there.
Clara : Oh great! I’m getting off just after, at Ampère. So it should be fine…
The driver : Well, are you going to make up your mind? I’m already three minutes late!
Clara : *to the driver* Who’s driving the next bus?
The driver : My colleague Bertrand. But mind you, he allows fewer people to stand than I do.
Mr. Dubois : Well, would you look at that! It’s Bertrand? He really enforces the maximum capacity.
Clara : Oh dear… So maybe this one is my best chance after all?
Mr. Dubois : Probably, yes. And besides, twelve minutes of waiting in this cold…
Clara : It’s freezing! Right, I’m off. *to the driver* I’m coming!
The driver : All right! Move towards the back, please.
A passenger : *from inside* There’s still room in the middle!
Clara : *getting on* Pardon me, excuse me… Oh dear, it’s really cramped!
Mr. Dubois : *also getting on* Come on! Let’s squeeze in a bit more!
Clara : Tell me, is it always like this in the mornings?
Mr. Dubois : Alas, yes! Between 8 and 9 it’s hell. But after Bellecour, you’ll see, we can breathe!
The driver : *announcing* Doors closing!
Clara : Phew! We managed to get on. Thanks for your advice!
Mr. Dubois : You’re welcome! By the way, if you take this line often, a little tip: the 8:20 bus is usually less crowded.
Clara : Oh really? But it’s earlier…
Mr. Dubois : Yes, but there are fewer students. They prefer the 8:35 one, like you!
Clara : Well, that’s a good tip! I’ll try earlier tomorrow, then.
Mr. Dubois : Here we are! Okay, we’re arriving at Bellecour. I’m getting off. Good luck with your exam!
Clara : Thank you very much! And thanks for the info on the schedules!
The driver : *announcing* Bellecour! Transfer to Metro Line A!
