The instructor explains the basics of camera operation

Regardez : f/1.8, f/2.8, f/5.6…
Sophie : Ces chiffres, ils correspondent à quoi exactement ?
Sophie : Et si je me trompe ?
Sophie : Euh, d’accord…
Marc : Ah oui, j’allais oublier !
Sophie : Ah ! Personne ne m’avait dit ça ! On recommence ?
Marc : Bien sûr ! Prenez votre temps… Mi-course… Vous entendez le bip ?
Sophie : Oui ! Et maintenant ?
Marc : Maintenant, appuyez complètement. Voilà ! Regardez votre photo sur l’écran.
Sophie : Waouh ! Elle est nette ! C’est magique !
Marc : Bravo !
Sophie : Parfait ! J’ai hâte d’apprendre tout ça !

English translation

In a photography club, Sophie, an enthusiastic beginner, is taking her first class with Marc, an experienced instructor. She has just bought her first digital SLR and wants to learn the basics of photography. Marc will explain to her how the camera works and the essential settings to get her first shots right.

DIALOGUE

Marc : So, Sophie, this is your first photography class, right? Show me your camera.
Sophie : Yes, um… I bought it last week but frankly, all these buttons scare me! I don’t even dare turn it on.
Marc : Don’t worry, that’s normal at first. Look, that’s a nice model you’ve got there! Okay, let’s start with the basics: how to hold the camera properly.
Sophie : Ah, I thought you just had to hold it like this…
Marc : No no, look. Right hand on the grip, index finger on the shutter button, and left hand under the lens to support it. That way you’ll avoid camera shake.
Sophie : Okay… Camera shake? What exactly is that?
Marc : It’s when your photos are blurry because you moved when you took the picture. Okay, now we’re going to look at the basic modes. Do you see this dial?
Sophie : Yes, with all these strange symbols… P, S, A, M… What do they all mean?
Marc : So, P is Program mode, perfect for beginners. The camera chooses everything automatically, but you can still tweak some settings.
Sophie : Oh great! And the others?
Marc : S is Shutter Priority, A is Aperture Priority, and M is Manual mode. But uh… we’ll look at that later, right? Let’s stick with P for today.
Sophie : Okay, but… aperture priority? I don’t understand.
Marc : Well, it’s a bit technical. Aperture is what controls depth of field. The wider the aperture, the blurrier the background will be.
Sophie : Oh really? And how do you adjust that?
Marc : With this little dial here… Wait, I’ll show you on my camera first. Look: f/1.8, f/2.8, f/5.6…
Sophie : What exactly do those numbers mean?
Marc : The smaller the number, the larger the aperture. I know, it’s a bit counterintuitive at first!
Sophie : Darn it! This is complicated… And what’s this? *She presses a button by accident*
Marc : Ah! You’ve just triggered the flash! Don’t panic, it’s not a big deal.
Sophie : Oops! Sorry! I didn’t mean to!
Marc : Don’t worry, it happens all the time. Oh, that reminds me: we need to talk about ISO settings too.
Sophie : ISO? Another technical thing?
Marc : Yes and no. It’s the sensitivity of your sensor to light. ISO 100 for outdoors in full sun, ISO 800 or higher in a dark place.
Sophie : What if I get it wrong?
Marc : Well, your photos will either be too dark, too bright, or have grain… digital noise, basically.
Sophie : Grain? Like in old photos?
Marc : Exactly! But in digital it’s called noise. Shall we do a practical test now?
Sophie : Uh, okay… But wait! How do I view my photos afterwards?
Marc : Ah yes, I almost forgot! This button with the little arrow – that’s to review your photos. And that one is to delete them if you don’t like them.
Sophie : Perfect! Well, can I try now?
Marc : Go ahead! But first, look in the viewfinder… What do you see?
Sophie : Uh… it’s all black!
Marc : Ah! *He laughs* You’ve forgotten to remove the lens cap!
Sophie : Oh my! What a beginner! *She blushes*
Marc : Heh, it happens to the best of us! Even to me sometimes… Alright, now try photographing that plant over there.
Sophie : Okay… I aim, I press… Oh! It’s all blurry!
Marc : That’s normal, the autofocus didn’t have time to focus. You need to half-press first, wait for the “beep”, then press fully.
Sophie : Ah! Nobody told me that! Shall we try again?
Marc : Of course! Take your time… Half-press… Do you hear the beep?
Sophie : Yes! And now?
Marc : Now press fully. There you go! Look at your photo on the screen.
Sophie : Wow! It’s sharp! It’s magic!
Marc : Bravo! You see, it’s not so complicated after all. With a bit of practice, all these settings will become automatic.
Sophie : Thank you so much! I have a feeling I’m going to love this hobby! Shall we continue with more exercises?
Marc : With pleasure! Next time we’ll cover composition and the rule of thirds. Sound good?
Sophie : Perfect! I can’t wait to learn all that!
