The Impact of Shift Work on Nutrition

Tu as l’air… fatigué, non ?
Marc: Salut Julie !
Julie: Bon, on va s’y mettre sérieusement alors !
Ils vont me dire : “Encore ton régime !”
Marc: Chouette ! Merci Julie, tu me sauves la vie ! Bon, on commande quoi maintenant ?

DIALOGUE

Julie: Hi Marc! It’s great to see you, it’s been a while! You look… tired, don’t you?
Marc: Hi Julie! Uh… yeah, it’s the night shift, you know. I’m completely out of sync at the moment.
Julie: Oh right, that’s true-you work nights now. And what about food, how do you manage?
Marc: Well, actually… it’s a disaster! I eat anything, anytime. Sandwiches from the vending machine, reheated meals…
Julie: Oh dear! And what time do you end up eating?
Marc: Hold on, it’s complicated… I start my shift at 9 p.m., so I eat around 7 p.m. before I leave. Then around 2 a.m. I have a food break at the hospital.
Julie: And in the morning when you get home?
Marc: Uh… I often snack on something and then go straight to bed. It’s not great, is it?
Julie: Marc, seriously, that’s worrying! You know that working shifts completely messes up your metabolism?
Marc: Yeah, I suspected as much… I’ve even gained weight these past few months. Darn, look at this! *he shows his belly*
Julie: Okay, let’s get serious then! First, tell me: what exactly do you eat during your shift?
Marc: Well… often potato chips, chocolate bars, coffee, a lot of coffee… And you, what do you recommend?
Julie: First thing: you need to plan your meals! Your body needs regularity, even with shift work.
Marc: Plan? But Julie, between emergencies, patients… I don’t always have time to cook!
Julie: Exactly! That’s why you need to prepare in advance. Meal prep – are you familiar with it?
Marc: Meal prep? Uh… no, never heard of it. What’s that?
Julie: You prepare all your meals over the weekend, put them in containers, and that’s it! Just reheat.
Marc: Oh! That could work… But what could I prepare that will keep well?
Julie: Sautéed vegetables, brown rice, protein… Avoid processed foods, they’re packed with sugar and salt.
Marc: Hm, yeah… And what about snacks? Because at night, I often get cravings.
Julie: Okay, watch out! Nighttime cravings are tricky. Your body is looking for quick energy, but…
Marc: But what?
Julie: But that just messes up your rhythm even more! Instead, have some nuts, dried fruit, a yogurt…
Marc: Okay… Oh, I just thought of something! There’s another problem: my colleagues often order pizzas or kebabs around 3 a.m.
Julie: Oh man! That’s tempting, isn’t it?
Marc: Totally! And it’s kind of social too, you know… I don’t want to come off as that annoying guy munching on his little seeds.
Julie: I get it, the social aspect is important. But Marc, your health comes first! Could you suggest ordering healthier options sometimes?
Marc: Meh… not sure that’ll go down well with my colleagues. They’ll tell me, “There you go again with your diet!”
Julie: Listen, you’re definitely not the only one with this problem! Healthcare workers – many of you struggle with eating.
Marc: It’s true… Sarah, my colleague, she’s always saying she gets heartburn because of her shifts.
Julie: Exactly! And the coffee – how many cups do you drink per night?
Marc: Uh… well, several… maybe five or six cups? To get through it!
Julie: Marc! Six coffees! You’re going to overload your nervous system! And it’ll keep you from sleeping well afterward.
Marc: Well, yeah, but how am I supposed to stay awake otherwise? My patients are counting on me!
Julie: I know… Try gradually replacing them with energizing herbal teas, green tea…
Marc: Energizing herbal teas? Do those really exist or are you making them up?
Julie: *laughs* I’m not making it up! Ginseng, guarana… And a better diet will naturally give you more energy.
Marc: Okay, I’ll try… Could you help me make a shopping list and a few meal plans?
Julie: Of course! We’ll do that this weekend if you want. And we’ll cook your first meal preps together!
Marc: Awesome! Thanks, Julie – you’re saving my life! So, what should we order now? No pizza, promise!
Julie: *laughs* Come on, for once we can treat ourselves! But on Sunday we’ll get serious about it!
