DIALOGUE
Sophie: Bon, les voilà ! Papa, maman, je vous présente Thomas. Thomas, voici mes parents : mon père Michel et ma mère Catherine.
Thomas: Bonsoir monsieur, bonsoir madame. Euh… enchanté de faire votre connaissance. Sophie m’a beaucoup parlé de vous.
Michel: Bonsoir Thomas.
Catherine: Elle a raison. Donnez-moi votre manteau, Thomas.
Michel: Une start-up ? Hm… Et c’est stable comme travail, ça ?
Sophie: Papa !
Sophie: Papa ! On sort ensemble depuis huit mois seulement !
Thomas: Non mais… euh… on y pense, bien sûr.

DIALOGUE
Sophie: Well, here they are! Dad, Mum, I’d like you to meet Thomas. Thomas, these are my parents: my father Michel and my mother Catherine.
Thomas: Good evening, sir, good evening, ma’am. Um… pleased to meet you. Sophie has told me a lot about you.
Michel: Good evening, Thomas. So you’re the famous Thomas our daughter has been going on about for months!
Catherine: Michel ! *laughs* Excuse my husband, Thomas. We’re delighted to finally meet you. Please come in!
Thomas: Thank you very much. Here, I brought something… *hands over a bouquet and a bottle* Some flowers for ma’am and a small bottle of Bordeaux.
Catherine: Oh, how kind of you! They’re beautiful. Aren’t they, Michel?
Michel: Hm, some Bordeaux… Ah, a 2018 Saint-Julien. Not bad at all. Do you know much about wine?
Thomas: Uh, well… a little. My father introduced me to it a bit, you see…
Sophie: Dad, don’t start your interrogation just yet! At least let him take off his jacket.
Catherine: She’s right. Give me your coat, Thomas. So, you work in IT, is that right?
Thomas: Exactly, I’m a web developer at a start-up. Nothing very… uh… prestigious, but I really enjoy it.
Michel: A start-up? Hm… Is that kind of work stable?
Sophie: Dad! Thomas, don’t mind him. He asks the same question of all my friends.
Thomas: No, no, it’s normal for him to be concerned. Listen, sir, I understand your concerns. It’s true the sector is a bit… volatile, but our company is doing well.
Catherine: Come on, let’s sit down! The roast is going to be overcooked. Thomas, you like lamb, I hope?
Thomas: I love it! But… uh… I probably should have warned you… I’m a bit allergic to nuts.
Catherine: Oh no! My gratin has pine nuts in it! Darn it!
Sophie: Mom, it’s not a big deal! Thomas, are pine nuts okay?
Thomas: Yes yes, pine nuts are fine. It’s mainly almonds and hazelnuts that give me trouble.
Michel: Well, that’s complicated! And our daughter – no allergies, at least? *laughs*
Sophie: Dad! You’re impossible!
Thomas: *laughing* No, Sophie is doing very well, sir. She is… she is wonderful.
Catherine: Ah, look at that! He’s blushing! That’s cute. Well, help yourself, Thomas, don’t hesitate.
Thomas: Thank you, ma’am. Mmm, it smells delicious! Do you often cook like this?
Catherine: Oh, I like to cook up nice little dishes. Did Sophie tell you I was a cooking teacher?
Thomas: Uh… no! Well, that explains everything! Sophie hadn’t told me…
Sophie: Yes, I did tell you! You weren’t listening, as usual!
Michel: Ha ha! Already a lovers’ quarrel! That rings a bell, Catherine…
Thomas: Oh no, we’re not really arguing… well… uh… you know how it is…
Catherine: Of course! And your parents, Thomas? Do they live far away?
Thomas: In Lyon. My father is a doctor and my mother… well, she was a lawyer but she retired last year.
Michel: Ah, a doctor! And what does he specialize in?
Thomas: Cardiology. He would have liked me to take up the torch but… uh… blood and I don’t mix!
Catherine: *laughs* To each their own! What’s important is to feel fulfilled in what you do.
Sophie: Exactly! And Thomas loves his work. He could spend entire nights in front of his computer.
Thomas: Sophie is exaggerating a bit… but it’s true that when I’m passionate about a project, I sometimes lose track of time.
Michel: And… uh… do you both have any plans?
Sophie: Dad! We’ve only been dating for eight months!
Thomas: No, but… uh… we’re thinking about it, of course. Well… we’ll see… in time…
Catherine: Come on, Michel, leave them alone! They’ve got time. Here, Thomas, help yourself to some more gratin.
Thomas: With pleasure! It’s really delicious. Sophie is lucky to have grown up with cooking like this.
Sophie: Oh, I didn’t inherit Mom’s culinary talent, alas!
Thomas: That’s not true! Your carbonara is perfect!
Michel: Pasta! Ah, young people these days… Back in my day, we at least learned the basics!
Catherine: You only knew how to make fried eggs when we met, too!
Sophie: Ah! Dad caught in the act! You see, Thomas, don’t worry, you’ll ace the exam!
Thomas: *relieved* Phew! I admit I was a bit stressed…
Michel: Well, you seem like a decent young man. And besides… if you make our Sophie happy, that’s the main thing.
Thomas: Thank you, sir. That’s… that’s exactly my intention.
Catherine: Well, who wants dessert? I made an apple pie!
Sophie: With almonds?
Catherine: Oh dear! I almost forgot! No, no, plain! Thank goodness you’re here, my darling!
Thomas: *laughs* Well, in the end, it might be me who introduces you to nut-free desserts!
