Summary: what healthy balance means to me

Tu sais, après mon burn-out l’année dernière…
Camille : Oui, je me souviens.
Thomas : Tiens, ça me rappelle quelque chose !
Thomas : Hein, tu plaisantes ? Sarah et Julien sont super compétents ! Il faut leur faire confiance.
Camille : Tu as raison…
Camille : Une heure ? Moi je me lève déjà à 6h30…
Thomas : Alors lève-toi à 5h30 ! Non, je rigole… Mais quinze minutes, c’est déjà bien !
Camille : Et niveau relations sociales ?
Parfois je me laisse déborder.
Camille : Tu me donnes vraiment envie de changer mes habitudes…
Camille : Haha, t’as raison !
Bon, on y retourne ?
Thomas : Parfait ! Et appelle ta sœur pour vous rattraper. La famille, c’est sacré !

DIALOGUE

Camille : Ah, Thomas! You seem more relaxed lately. How do you manage all that?
Thomas : Hi Camille! Well, I’ve finally realized what really matters to me. You know, after my burnout last year…
Camille : Yes, I remember. It made me think about it too, actually.
Thomas : Now, I set clear boundaries. No more emails after 7 p.m.! And you, how are you doing with your work-life balance?
Camille : Uh… it’s complicated. I have trouble saying no to my boss. Just yesterday, he asked me to stay until 9 p.m. to finish the Martin file.
Thomas : Oh really? But weren’t you supposed to be going to the theatre with your sister?
Camille : Yes, exactly! I had to cancel… again. She’s starting to get fed up, and I don’t blame her.
Thomas : Oh, that reminds me! I used to sacrifice everything for work. My girlfriend used to tell me I had become a zombie.
Camille : And what made it click for you?
Thomas : Well, when I realized I no longer had any time for my passions. No more sports, no more reading, no more nights out… Even my weekends were being swallowed up by work!
Camille : That’s exactly my situation! My yoga class, my friends… everything comes after work.
Thomas : For me now, a healthy balance is, first and foremost, sticking to my hours. I work efficiently from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., period.
Camille : Yeah, but our boss doesn’t really accept that…
Thomas : Wait, you have to talk to him! At first, he sulked, that’s true. But when he saw that I was more productive, less stressed…
Camille : Really? He changed his mind?
Thomas : Totally! And I also learned to delegate. Before, I wanted to control everything.
Camille : Ah, that’s my big problem! I always tell myself that no one will do it as well as I do.
Thomas : What, are you kidding? Sarah and Julien are really competent! You have to trust them.
Camille : You’re right… But tell me, concretely, what’s your ideal balance?
Thomas : Well, for starters, I work out three times a week. That’s non-negotiable! It clears my head.
Camille : Great! I used to love running…
Thomas : And I also keep my evenings and weekends for my private life. Cinema, restaurants, walks… Real life, you know!
Camille : That must be nice… Even on Sundays, I think about Monday.
Thomas : Oh come on, you need to disconnect! You could start by turning off your work phone in the evenings?
Camille : Uh… I’ve thought about it, but I’m afraid of missing something urgent.
Thomas : Urgent on a Sunday evening? Come on, be honest! How many real emergencies have you had in the last six months?
Camille : Well… none, actually. You’ve got a point!
Thomas : And what about vacation time? Do you at least take yours?
Camille : That’s the problem! I still have fifteen days left to take before the end of the year…
Thomas : Darn! Fifteen days? But you absolutely have to take them! Me, I plan my vacations at the start of the year.
Camille : How do you manage to really switch off on vacation?
Thomas : Golden rule: I leave my laptop at the office and go to a different region! There’s no way I’d be tempted to work.
Camille : Clever! So, any other tips for everyday life?
Thomas : Yes! I set aside an hour in the morning for myself. A relaxed breakfast, reading the paper… It gets the day off to a good start.
Camille : An hour? Me, I already get up at 6:30…
Thomas : So get up at 5:30! No, I’m kidding… But fifteen minutes is already pretty good!
Camille : And what about your social life? Are you able to keep up your friendships?
Thomas : Ah, that’s essential! I see my friends at least once a week. Even if it’s just to grab a drink.
Camille : My friends… uh… we mostly see each other on WhatsApp now. It’s sad, isn’t it?
Thomas : Exactly! Friendship needs to be nurtured. Hey, why don’t you suggest a brunch this weekend?
Camille : Good idea! So, you never have relapses? You never fall back into your old ways?
Thomas : Yes, of course! Sometimes I get overwhelmed. But now I notice it sooner and I correct it.
Camille : You’re really making me want to change my habits…
Thomas : The hardest part is getting started! But once you get a taste of it, you can’t go back.
Camille : Okay, where should I start, do you think?
Thomas : Set yourself a cutoff time tonight. 7 PM, for example. And stick to it!
Camille : Okay! And what if the boss isn’t happy?
Thomas : You calmly explain to your boss that you want to be more efficient. And, at worst, there are other companies!
Camille : Haha, you’re right! Thanks, Thomas – this conversation did me good.
Thomas : You’re welcome! And don’t forget: work is important, but health and happiness are vital!
Camille : Message received! So, shall we get back to it? But I promise, tonight I’ll turn everything off at 7 PM!
Thomas : Perfect! And call your sister to catch up. Family is sacred!
