DIALOGUE
Thomas : Bon alors, on s’y met ?
Julie : Tu as raison.
Thomas : Chouette alors ! Donc on fait quoi ? On reste locataires toute notre vie ?
Julie : Ah super !
Julie : Mmh, ça me va. Et pour les vacances cet été ? On avait prévu l’Espagne…
Thomas : Euh… Julie ? On vient de dire qu’on économisait ! Les sushis, c’est 40 euros !
Julie : Ah oui, mince !
English translation
Thomas and Julie, a couple who have been married for five years, are sitting down on a Sunday afternoon in their living room to take stock of their plans for the future. They have financial documents and their planners in front of them, ready to seriously plan the coming years of their life together.
DIALOGUE
Thomas : All right, shall we get started? I’ve pulled out all our bank statements and… uh, honestly, it’s now or never to face up to things.
Julie : You’re right. We’ve been postponing this conversation for months! So, where do we start? Buying the house or having a baby?
Thomas : Well, exactly – they’re linked, aren’t they? If we want to have a child within the next two years, we need to have a bigger place first.
Julie : Oh, wait! I thought we could stay in the apartment for another year or two, even with a baby. It would save us quite a bit…
Thomas : What? But we’ve already talked about it! In 50 square metres with a kid crying at night? And the neighbours will hate us!
Julie : Listen, let’s be realistic for two minutes. If we buy now, we’ll have to tighten our belts for at least ten years. Do you really want us to live like monks?
Thomas : Great then! So what do we do? Stay renters our whole lives? My mother will tell me again that we’re throwing money out the window…
Julie : Oh, your mother! Let her say what she wants. It’s our life, not hers! And anyway, have you worked out how much a mortgage would cost us per month?
Thomas : Uh… well, if we put down €20,000 as a down payment, that would be about €1,200 a month for a decent three-room apartment.
Julie : And where are we supposed to get that €20,000 from? From our Livret A that holds the whopping sum of… €8,000?
Thomas : Okay, fine, I admit I haven’t worked everything out. But my parents could help us, couldn’t they?
Julie : Oh great! So we’re going to be dependent on your parents? And what about me in all this – what will happen to me? I have my pride too!
Thomas : No, that’s not what I meant! Come on, calm down… Maybe we could consider a family loan that we’d repay?
Julie : Mmm, why not… But let’s get back to the matter at hand. The most urgent thing is still deciding whether we really want to have a child right now.
Thomas : Well yes, I’m ready! And you, are you still hesitating?
Julie : It’s not that I’m hesitating… but with my promotion possibly coming next year, it’d be silly to ruin everything, wouldn’t it?
Thomas : Oh really? You didn’t tell me about that! Is it true your boss promised you something?
Julie : Let’s say she made it clear to me that if I kept this up, there would very likely be a promotion. It would almost double my salary!
Thomas : Oh wow! That changes everything! If you earn twice as much, we can afford to buy AND have a baby!
Julie : Yes, but… what if it doesn’t work? What if she pulls that “actually, we don’t have the budget anymore” on me?
Thomas : Listen, let’s do it this way: we’ll give ourselves six months to see if your promotion comes through. In the meantime, we’ll save as much as possible.
Julie : Okay, but concretely, how do we save? Go out less? Eat only pasta?
Thomas : Oh no, let’s not be ridiculous! But we can stop going away for a weekend every month, and eat out less often…
Julie : Mmh, that works for me. And what about our summer vacation? We had planned to go to Spain…
Thomas : Well… maybe we could go for something a bit… uh… more affordable? Like camping in France?
Julie : Well, why not! That could be nice, actually. More authentic than our luxury hotels!
Thomas : Perfect! So let’s recap: we’ll save for six months, we’ll see about your promotion, and then we’ll talk again about the baby and buying a home.
Julie : Exactly! And if the situation hasn’t changed in six months, we’ll reconsider everything from scratch.
Thomas : Come on, let’s shake on it! Deal?
Julie : It’s a deal! But promise me we’ll check in regularly, okay? Not suddenly in six months’ time!
Thomas : Promise! Once a month we’ll go over our finances and see where we stand. Is that OK with you?
Julie : Perfect! Well, now that we’ve sorted out the future of humanity, shall we have sushi delivered?
Thomas : Uh… Julie? We just said we’re saving! Sushi is 40 euros!
Julie : Oh right, drat! Well… pasta then? The savings start tonight!
Thomas : There you go! And I’m the one doing the cooking! That’s part of the savings plan too!
