Small talk at the table: work, hobbies, origin

Marie : Ah d’accord ! Ça a l’air… technique !
Thomas : Pas mal, oui…
Tu joues depuis longtemps ?
Thomas : Depuis gamin, ouais. Au fait, tu es d’où à l’origine ? Ton accent me dit quelque chose…
Marie : Bonne oreille !
Marie : Ah bon ? Tu parles portugais alors ?
Thomas : Un peu, avec ma grand-mère surtout. Elle refuse de parler français, cette têtue !
Marie : C’est mignon ! Moi mes grands-parents étaient…
Serveur : Excusez-moi, monsieur Santos ?
Thomas : Euh… oui ?
Marie : Tiens donc… Et pourquoi tu m’as menti ?
Thomas : T’as raison, excuse-moi.
Marie : Ah bon ? En 2024 ? Vraiment ?
Thomas : Hélas oui… Certains clients sont encore… disons… vieux jeu.
Marie : C’est dingue ! Bon, on repart à zéro ?
Allez, on y va ?
Thomas : C’est parti ! Cette soirée commence vraiment bien finalement…

DIALOGUE

Please provide the French dialogue you would like translated.
Marie : So, tell me… what exactly do you do? On your profile, you only wrote “private sector”.
Thomas : Uh, well… it’s a bit complicated to explain. I’m a consultant in… how to put it… corporate tax optimization.
Marie : Oh, okay! That sounds… technical! I’m a primary school teacher, much simpler, right!
Thomas : Primary school teacher? Nice! What grade do you teach?
Marie : I teach CP-CE1, the 6-7-year-olds. It’s exhausting but I love it! And you, do you travel a lot for your job?
Thomas : Not bad, yeah… Mostly in Switzerland and Luxembourg. So, apart from school, what do you do to relax?
Marie : I have a bit of an odd passion… I fence! And you?
Thomas : Fencing? Seriously? Wow! I’m more traditional: Sunday morning football with friends.
Marie : Ah, a footballer! Have you been playing for a long time?
Thomas : Since I was a kid, yeah. By the way, where are you originally from? Your accent sounds familiar…
Marie : Good ear! I was born in Toulouse, but I grew up in Bordeaux. And you?
Thomas : Born-and-bred Parisian! Well… my parents arrived from Portugal in the 1980s.
Marie : Oh? So you speak Portuguese then?
Thomas : A little, mostly with my grandmother. She refuses to speak French, that stubborn woman!
Marie : That’s sweet! As for me, my grandparents were…
Waiter : Excuse me, Mr. Santos?
Thomas : Uh… yes?
Waiter : Your bank card isn’t going through, there’s a problem…
Marie : Santos? But you told me your name was Thomas Martin!
Thomas : Well… uh… it’s complicated. Santos is my real name, but professionally I go by Martin.
Marie : Well… why did you lie to me?
Thomas : I didn’t lie! It’s just that… darn, how can I explain…
Marie : Listen, Thomas or Santos, I don’t care about your name, but don’t start our relationship off with secrets!
Thomas : You’re right, I’m sorry. Actually, in my line of work, having a foreign-sounding name isn’t always easy…
Marie : Oh really? In 2024? Seriously?
Thomas : Alas, yes… Some clients are still… let’s say… old-fashioned.
Marie : That’s crazy! Okay, shall we start over? I’m Marie Dubois, 28, a primary school teacher and a fencer!
Thomas : Thomas Santos, 30, tax consultant and weekend footballer!
Marie : There, that’s better! By the way, about the bill, no worries, we’ll split it!
Thomas : No, no, I insist! I’ll pay in cash.
Marie : All right then, but next time, it’s on me!
Thomas : Next time? So I didn’t scare you off with my stories about my name?
Marie : Not at all! On the contrary, I like people who have stories to tell!
Thomas : Perfect! How about we go for a drink somewhere else? I’d like to know more about that passion for fencing!
Marie : With pleasure! But be warned, I could talk about it for hours!
Thomas : I’ve got all the time! And I promise, no more secrets!
Marie : It’s a deal! Shall we go?
Thomas : Let’s go! This evening is really starting off well after all…
