Lucas : Ou alors quoi ?
Emma : Ou alors on pourrait directement demander à Maxime ! Comme ça, au moins, on serait fixés.
Lucas : Tu veux l’accuser en face ? Emma, réfléchis deux secondes ! Et si c’était juste des ragots ?
Emma : Zut… tu as raison.
Lucas : Alors là, on avisera.
Ça m’a paru bizarre…
Lucas : Emma ! Tu recommences ! Il est peut-être juste malade, hein !
Emma : Euh… oui, tu as raison. Bon, je vais aller voir Sarah maintenant. On se retrouve après les cours ?
Lucas : OK !
Emma : Promis ! Merci Lucas, tu m’as évité de faire une bêtise…
Lucas : De rien ! C’est ça les amis, non ? Allez, à tout à l’heure !
Emma : À tout à l’heure ! Et… euh… Lucas ?
Lucas : Oui ?
Emma : Si jamais tu croises Maxime, tu lui dis rien, hein ? Pas un mot sur notre conversation !
Lucas : Bien sûr que non ! On va d’abord tirer ça au clair. Fais-moi confiance !
English translation
The scene takes place in the high school courtyard during the lunch break. Emma and Lucas, two friends in their senior year, are talking near the benches. Emma has just heard rumors about their classmate Maxime and is unsure how to react. Lucas, more thoughtful, tries to help her make the right decision.
DIALOGUE
Emma : Lucas, I have to tell you! You don’t know what I heard about Maxime this morning?
Lucas : Uh… no, what? What’s going on this time?
Emma : Well, get this – Chloé told me she saw Maxime coming out of the principal’s office last night, looking completely panicked!
Lucas : Oh? And?
Emma : So? Don’t you get it! Apparently he cheated on last week’s math test. Sarah heard him say it to someone on the phone.
Lucas : Wait, wait… Chloé saw Maxime coming out of the principal’s office, right? And Sarah heard him on the phone? That all seems a bit… confusing.
Emma : No, listen! Besides, do you remember how weird he was during the test? He kept looking to the right the whole time.
Lucas : Emma, honestly… don’t you think you’re getting a bit carried away?
Emma : What do you mean I’m getting carried away? I’m not the one making it up! Everyone’s already talking about it.
Lucas : Exactly! Everyone’s talking about it, but nobody knows anything concrete. Don’t you think that’s suspicious?
Emma : Yeah… Still, there might be some truth to it. And besides, if he did cheat, it’s not fair to us!
Lucas : Okay, but even if that were true, what business is it of ours? It’s his business, isn’t it?
Emma : His business? Lucas, we’re in the same class! If the teachers find out there’s cheating, they’ll all be watching us like criminals!
Lucas : Okay, fine, I understand your point… But tell me, exactly what are you planning to do?
Emma : Well, I don’t really know… Maybe we should talk to Mrs. Durand about it? Or…
Lucas : Or what?
Emma : Or we could just ask Maxime directly! That way, at least, we’d know for sure.
Lucas : You want to confront him? Emma, think for two seconds! What if it’s just rumors?
Emma : Darn… you’re right. But it drives me crazy not knowing!
Lucas : Listen, I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we go check our sources first?
Emma : What do you mean?
Lucas : Well, you could ask Sarah again exactly what she heard. And I can talk to Chloé to find out if she’s sure about what she saw.
Emma : Hey, not a bad idea! At least we’ll have a clearer picture.
Lucas : Exactly! And above all, let’s avoid spreading things that might be false.
Emma : Okay… But what if we find out it’s true?
Lucas : We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. But personally, I think we should talk to Maxime first, give him a chance to explain himself.
Emma : Yeah… After all, it’s true that he’s always been decent to us. It’d be awful to throw him under the bus without being sure.
Lucas : There! And besides, imagine we’re completely wrong… Could you picture yourself explaining it to him afterwards?
Emma : Oh dear, no! I’d die of embarrassment! Okay, fine, we’ll do it your way.
Lucas : Perfect! By the way, did you see him today, Maxime?
Emma : Actually, no! He wasn’t in French class this morning. That seemed strange…
Lucas : Emma! There you go again! He might just be sick, you know!
Emma : Uh… yes, you’re right. Okay, I’m going to go see Sarah now. Shall we meet up after class?
Lucas : OK! And above all, keep it to yourself until then, okay?
Emma : I promise! Thanks, Lucas – you saved me from doing something stupid…
Lucas : You’re welcome! That’s what friends are for, right? Alright, see you later!
Emma : See you later! And… uh… Lucas?
Lucas : Yes?
Emma : If you happen to run into Maxime, don’t say anything to him, okay? Not a word about our conversation!
Lucas : Of course not! We’ll get to the bottom of this first. Trust me!
