Thomas : Bonjour Madame Dubois.
Thomas : Hein ? Il y a une fuite au deuxième ? Personne m’a rien dit !
Tu l’as pas eu ?
Mme Dubois : Depuis quinze jours minimum !
Thomas : Bon d’accord, d’accord…
Thomas : Ça a l’air… chronophage.
Thomas : Bon… *prend une grande inspiration* Allez, je me lance ! Où est-ce que je dois signer ?
Claire : Vraiment ?
Claire : *souriante* Merci Thomas !
English translation
In the courtyard of a Parisian apartment building, Claire, a resident for five years, pins up a poster to recruit volunteers for the co-ownership council. Her neighbour Thomas goes downstairs to fetch his mail and notices the announcement, while Mrs Dubois, the concierge, steps out of her lodge to join them.
DIALOGUE
Claire : There, I hope it’ll attract some people… *adjusts the poster on the noticeboard*
Thomas : Hi Claire! What are you putting up there? *moves closer to read*
Claire : Oh hi Thomas! Well, we’re looking for new members for the co-ownership council. There are only three of us left and… um, let’s say we’re having trouble getting organized.
Thomas : Oh really? But you seemed to be running things well before, didn’t you?
Claire : Yeah, well… *sighs* The problem is that Mr. Lefèvre resigned after the big argument about the façade work.
Mme Dubois : *coming out of the concierge’s lodge* Hello everyone! I hear you talking about the co-ownership council… Ah, finally someone taking action! I’ve been saying for months that we need to renew the team.
Thomas : Hello Mrs. Dubois. It’s true that the last general meetings were… how to put it… tense.
Claire : Tense, that’s the word! *laughs nervously* Between those who want to renovate everything and those who don’t want to spend anything… We’re getting nowhere!
Mrs. Dubois : And there’s also the problem of the bicycles in the courtyard, the noise from the third floor, the water leak on the second floor…
Thomas : What? There’s a leak on the second floor? Nobody told me anything!
Claire : Uh… yes, we slipped a note into all the mailboxes last week. You didn’t get it?
Thomas : Nope! *checks his mailbox* Oh drat, it’s overflowing… I haven’t picked up my mail since… uh… *counts on his fingers*
Mrs. Dubois : It’s been at least fifteen days! I never see any of you come downstairs, you young people.
Thomas : All right, all right… *tears open an envelope* Oh, what’s this? “Emergency council meeting”? But that was last night!
Claire : Yeah, exactly. It was just the two of us. Mrs. Petit and me. A total fiasco!
Thomas : Ah… sorry. But actually, what exactly does being on the council involve?
Claire : Well, we meet once a month to discuss problems with the building, prepare the general meetings, and handle estimates for repairs…
Mrs. Dubois : And above all, we listen to the co-owners’ complaints! *laughs* Believe me, there’s no shortage of them!
Thomas : That sounds… time-consuming. How much time does it take per month?
Claire : Honestly? Between the meetings, phone calls to the contractors, the paperwork… uh… maybe ten hours a month?
Thomas : Ten hours?! But you’re volunteers, I imagine?
Claire : Completely unpaid, yes. Well, we get a small reduction on the service charges, but it’s symbolic.
Mrs. Dubois : The real advantage is that we can really improve life in the building! Look, since Claire has been here, we’ve finally had the intercom repaired.
Thomas : That’s true, that was convenient! No need to go downstairs every time… So, how many people are you looking for?
Claire : Ideally three or four. So we’d have a committee of six or seven members. That way, we can better divide up the tasks.
Thomas : Hmm… *hesitates* What if we ever argue with the other members? Because, well, Mr. Lefèvre stormed out, didn’t he?
Mrs. Dubois : Oh my, what a story! He absolutely insisted on having the whole façade redone this year. Fifty thousand euros! Can you imagine?
Claire : The problem is he wouldn’t listen to others. On a committee, you have to be able to negotiate, to find compromises…
Thomas : Yeah, I see… And the other co-owners, do they take part in the decisions?
Claire : Of course! We only make proposals. It’s the general meeting that votes. We’re more like… um… how to put it… coordinators.
Thomas : *looks at the poster again* “Join a dynamic team”… Now that’s marketing! *smiles*
Claire : *blushes slightly* So what? You’ve got to motivate the troops! And we even have fun sometimes. Right, Mrs. Dubois?
Mrs. Dubois : Oh yes! The time we organised the neighbourhood get-together was lovely! Even Mr. Grumpy from the fifth floor came downstairs.
Thomas : Mr. Grumpy? *laughs* That’s not his real name, I hope?
Claire : No, it’s Mr. Moreau. But… let’s say he’s not much into socializing.
Thomas : Ah, I know who that is! The one who complains about the noise when we vacuum after 7 p.m.?
Mrs. Dubois : Exactly! But on the council, we’re able to handle those kinds of situations. We find solutions so that everyone is happy.
Thomas : Okay… *takes a deep breath* Here goes! Where do I sign?
Claire : Really? That’s great! Um… well actually, you have to come to a meeting first, to see how it goes.
Thomas : Ah… and when’s the next one?
Claire : *checks her phone* Next Thursday, 8:30 p.m., at Mrs. Petit’s on the fourth floor. Does that work for you?
Thomas : Perfect! By the way, can I bring cookies? My girlfriend makes excellent ones…
Mrs. Dubois : *applauds* That’s the spirit we need! With cookies, the meetings are going to be a lot more fun!
Claire : *smiling* Thank you, Thomas! You’ll see, we make a great team. And who knows? Maybe we’ll find more volunteers this week!
Thomas : I hope so! Well, I’m off to pick up all this mail… See you Thursday then!
Claire : See you Thursday! And thanks again!
