Planning a New Year’s Eve party

Bon, euh… on a dit combien d’invités déjà ?
Sophie : T’as raison…
Thomas : Euh, Sophie ? On avait dit budget raisonnable, tu te souviens ?
Thomas : Exactement ! Chacun apporte quelque chose. Une auberge espagnole, quoi ! Ça sera plus sympa et moins cher.
Sophie : Chouette, bonne idée ! Et pour l’animation ? J’avais pensé engager un DJ…
Thomas : Un DJ ? Mais enfin, Sophie ! On a déjà ma chaîne hi-fi !
Sophie : Hmm… T’as peut-être raison.
On chuchote à minuit ?
Thomas : Haha ! Pas bête ! Bon, récapitulons : auberge espagnole, déco simple, ma playlist, champagne à minuit… Ça me va !
Time’s Up, cartes…
Sophie : Oh oui !

DIALOGUE

Sophie : So, Thomas, shall we go over our New Year’s Eve plans? I can’t wait to organize everything!
Thomas : Yeah, totally! Well, um… how many guests did we say again? Around fifteen?
Sophie : Well, actually, I have a bit of a problem… I’ve already spoken to my colleagues and they’re all really enthusiastic. We might end up being closer to twenty-five!
Thomas : Oh? But wait, my apartment is only 60 square meters! We’re going to be packed like sardines!
Sophie : Oh, that’s true… Darn! I hadn’t thought of that. What if we rented a community hall?
Thomas : A hall? Are you kidding? It’s going to cost us an arm! And besides, the atmosphere won’t be the same, will it?
Sophie : You’re right… So, what about the menu then? I was thinking of something quite classy: smoked salmon, foie gras, champagne…
Thomas : Uh, Sophie ? We agreed on a reasonable budget, remember? With all that, we’re going to blow the budget!
Sophie : Oh dear, that’s true! Well then, what shall we do? A laid-back, no-frills party?
Thomas : Exactly! Everyone brings something. A potluck, you know! It’ll be nicer and cheaper.
Sophie : Great, good idea! And for the entertainment? I was thinking of hiring a DJ…
Thomas : A DJ? Come on, Sophie! We’ve already got my hi-fi system! And Marc, you know, Julie’s boyfriend, has loads of great playlists.
Sophie : Mm… if you say so. Right, and the decorations? I’ve already looked into it: gold garlands, silver balloons…
Thomas : Hold on, hold on! We’re not putting on the Oscars here! A few candles, some streamers, and that’s it!
Sophie : Are you seriously going to do it on the cheap or what? It’s New Year’s Eve, Thomas! It deserves to be celebrated properly!
Thomas : Yeah, but doing it properly doesn’t mean going broke! The important thing is that we have a good evening with friends.
Sophie : Hmm… You might be right. Okay, at least for the drinks, can we make an effort? Some good champagne for midnight?
Thomas : I’m with you on that! A decent bottle of champagne, and some sparkling wine for the rest of the evening. Sound good?
Sophie : Perfect! Oh, I almost forgot! My sister told me she’d like to come with her new boyfriend…
Thomas : Uh… your sister? The one who always makes a scene when she’s had a few drinks?
Sophie : Come on, Thomas! She’s changed! And besides, she’s family… I can’t leave her all alone on New Year’s Eve!
Thomas : Okay, fine… But you’ll keep an eye on her, won’t you? Last year at Pierre’s she caused quite a scene!
Sophie : I promise! Oh, and another thing… My upstairs neighbor is already complaining about the noise. He’s threatening to call the cops if we make too much of a racket.
Thomas : Oh great! So how are we supposed to have a blast then? Whisper at midnight?
Sophie : Well, no, but maybe we could let him know nicely? Invite him to come and have a drink?
Thomas : Your neighbor? But he’s at least seventy years old! He’s going to kill the vibe with our friends!
Sophie : Or we could give him a bottle of wine and some earplugs! What do you think?
Thomas : Haha! Not a bad idea! Okay, let’s recap: potluck, simple decorations, my playlist, champagne at midnight… That works for me!
Sophie : And I’ll take care of the invitations on WhatsApp. Shall we say 8 p.m. for drinks?
Thomas : Perfect! By the way, have you thought about games to liven things up? Time’s Up, cards…
Sophie : Oh yes! And we could do a 2000s-themed music quiz! It’s going to be awesome!
Thomas : Now that’s an excellent idea! Well then, we’re all set. Can’t wait for the 31st!
Sophie : I can’t wait! This party is going to be memorable!
Thomas : And it’s within budget, too! Okay, shall we meet tomorrow to do the shopping?
Sophie : Let’s go! See you tomorrow, chief organizer!
