Planning a daily study routine

Marie : Ah bon ? Tu pourrais me donner des conseils ?
Tu as raison, autant en profiter.
Thomas : Exactement !
Ça me paraît peu, non ?
Thomas : Détrompe-toi !
Thomas : Euh… là tu me poses une colle !
Marie : Hahaha !
Thomas : Ah ben mince alors !
Bon, on commence dès demain ?
Marie : Banco !
Thomas : De rien ! À nous les langues étrangères !

Marie and Thomas are roommates and are both learning foreign languages. That evening, they discuss their learning methods in their living room and try to organize their daily routine to be more effective in their language studies.

DIALOGUE

Marie : Hey Thomas, I feel like I’m stagnating in Spanish lately. How do you manage to stay motivated with your Italian?
Thomas : Uh… well, it’s not always easy, I admit. But I try to organize a daily schedule. You know, a little every day rather than big sessions on the weekend.
Marie : Oh really? Could you give me some advice? Because right now I’m learning in a totally haphazard way!
Thomas : Of course! So in the morning at breakfast, I spend 20 minutes on vocabulary flashcards. It gently wakes up your brain, right!
Marie : Oh, that’s clever! And then?
Thomas : Well, on my commute I listen to podcasts in Italian. That’s great because it helps me get used to different accents.
Marie : Great! I waste my time scrolling through Instagram on the subway… You’re right, I should make the most of it.
Thomas : Exactly! And you, have you ever tried mobile apps? Like Duolingo or Babbel?
Marie : Yes, I downloaded Duolingo but… uh… let’s say my streak fell apart after a week!
Thomas : Ah, the famous streak! I had trouble at first too. The trick is to set a specific time each day.
Marie : Mmh, what time of day are you thinking of?
Thomas : I do it just before dinner. That way, if I forget, I still have another chance in the evening before I go to bed.
Marie : Not a bad idea! And what about grammar? That’s really my weak point in Spanish…
Thomas : I have to admit I’ve found a method that works really well. You take one grammar rule per week, no more.
Marie : Only one rule per week? That seems too few, doesn’t it?
Thomas : Not at all! You study it on Monday, you do exercises on Tuesday and Wednesday, and for the rest of the week you try to use it in sentences.
Marie : Ah, I see the idea! Rather than learning everything all at once and then forgetting it afterwards…
Thomas : There you go! And on Sunday, a quick review of all the rules from the week. It’s spaced repetition, a highly effective technique!
Marie : Darn, I should’ve thought of that earlier! And what about pronunciation? Because I feel like I have a French accent so thick you could cut it with a knife…
Thomas : Uh… you’re stumping me there! I’m bad with the Italian accent too. But I’ve started recording myself.
Marie : Re… record yourself? You mean with your phone?
Thomas : Yeah! I read texts aloud and record myself. Then I compare with native speakers on YouTube. It’s… pretty humiliating at first!
Marie : Hahaha! I can totally picture you! But that’s a great idea. We could even correct each other!
Thomas : Hey, good idea! We could have conversation sessions. Like 30 minutes in Spanish, 30 minutes in Italian?
Marie : Totally! But… uh… there’s a small problem. My Italian is practically non-existent…
Thomas : Oh, darn! What if we did sessions where we explain to each other what we learned during the day? In French, but using examples in our target languages?
Marie : Great idea! It would force us to review and synthesize. After dinner, does that work for you?
Thomas : Perfect! Okay, and what about reading? Because I tend to choose things that are too difficult and I get discouraged…
Marie : Ah, I’ve got the solution for that! Children’s books first, then young adult novels. No shame in that – it’s smart!
Thomas : Not bad! And online newspapers?
Marie : Good idea too! We could set ourselves a goal: one short article a day. What do you think?
Thomas : I love it! Okay, let’s recap our schedule then. Morning: flashcards at breakfast…
Marie : Commute: podcasts or articles on the phone…
Thomas : Before dinner: mobile app for grammar or vocabulary…
Marie : And after dinner: our mutual review session!
Thomas : Perfect! And on weekends, shall we have a movie night in the original language?
Marie : Great! With subtitles in the language we’re learning, not in French!
Thomas : Deal! So, shall we start tomorrow?
Marie : You bet! Thanks, Thomas – I’ve regained my motivation because of you!
Thomas : You’re welcome! Here’s to foreign languages!
