On va s’débrouiller.
Thomas : Euh… laisse-moi voir.
Léa : Papa a raison maman.
Sophie : File vite alors !
Je file me préparer !
Sophie : Cette gamine alors…
English translation
It’s Wednesday evening and Sophie returns home from work tired. She finds her husband Thomas in the kitchen, already preparing dinner for the whole family. Their daughter Léa, 16, has just arrived home from high school and they must organize the evening meal while taking everyone’s constraints into account.
DIALOGUE
Sophie : Good evening, my darling! Mmm, it smells delicious in here! What are you making?
Thomas : Hey, sweetheart! Well, I started a zucchini gratin. I thought that with the salad and yesterday’s ham…
Léa : Hi Mum! Dad, uh… I have a little problem. I completely forgot to tell you that Manon is coming for dinner tonight so we can work together on our history presentation.
Sophie : Really? Tonight? But, Léa, you could have told us earlier!
Thomas : Wait, wait… When is your friend arriving?
Léa : In about half an hour or so. Sorry, I really didn’t think… We can add another place setting, right?
Sophie : Of course we can, but the problem is we won’t have enough with just the gratin. And I was hoping to sit back and relax…
Thomas : Okay, don’t panic! We’ll manage. Léa, can you set the table for four? And bring out the glasses too.
Léa : Okay, Dad. By the way, Manon doesn’t eat ham, she’s a vegetarian.
Sophie : Oh great! And you’re telling us that now! Thomas, what do we have in the fridge?
Thomas : Uh… let me see. We still have eggs, cheese, uh… tomatoes. Oh, and I think there’s still some pasta in the cupboard.
Sophie : How about we make herbed scrambled eggs as well? With a tomato salad?
Léa : Good idea, Mom! Manon loves that. Can I help you prepare it?
Thomas : Yeah, that’ll be perfect. Sophie, will you take care of the eggs? I’ll finish the gratin and prepare the salad.
Sophie : Okay, but first I’m going to go change. I can’t stand this dress! Léa, can you take out the eggs and the butter?
Léa : No problem! Uh… what are we drinking tonight? Water?
Thomas : I was going to open a bottle of Côtes-du-Rhône, but with your friend… Maybe water and apple juice, right?
Sophie : Perfect! Okay, I’ll be back in five minutes. Léa, remember to clear up your mess on the living room table before she gets here!
Léa : Mom! It’s not a mess, it’s my schoolwork! But fine, OK, I’ll tidy up.
Thomas : By the way, girls, what time are we eating? Because I’ve got the match at 9:30 p.m….
Sophie : Thomas! Tonight we’re having someone over!
Thomas : So what? She’s just a friend of Léa’s, not the Queen of England! And anyway, the match starts late…
Léa : Dad’s right, Mom. Can we eat around 7:30 p.m.? That way afterwards we can go up to work in my room.
Sophie : Alright, alright… But Thomas, you turn off the TV during dinner, okay!
Thomas : I promise! Okay, Léa, can you pass me the olive oil? And put the vinaigrette on the table too.
Léa : Which one? The mustard one or the shallot one?
Sophie : The mustard one – it’s more traditional. Oh, and don’t forget the bread! Is there any left from lunch?
Thomas : Yeah, but it’s a bit hard. I’ll put it in the toaster.
Léa : Great! I love toast with scrambled eggs! Manon is going to love it.
Sophie : Well then, this little impromptu dinner is going to be nice after all! Thomas, can you bring out the cheese too?
Thomas : Of course! Camembert and goat cheese okay?
Léa : Oh my! She’s arriving in ten minutes and I haven’t even had time to redo my hair!
Sophie : Hurry up then! We’re finishing up here. And next time, let us know ahead of time, okay?
Thomas : Come on, it’ll all be fine! The important thing is that we’re all together. Even if it’s a bit of a mess…
Léa : Thanks Dad, thanks Mom! You’re awesome! I’m off to get ready!
Sophie : That girl, huh… Luckily we adapt easily in this house!
Thomas : That’s what makes life interesting, my dear! Alright, dinner in fifteen minutes?
