Thomas : Haha ! Tu as remarqué ?
Thomas : Tu vas voir, tu vas vite t’habituer !
English translation
It’s the start of the school year in a final-year class at Lycée Voltaire in Lyon. Léa, a new student who has just moved from Marseille, is looking for her place in this new school. During the break, she meets Thomas, a friendly classmate who notices she looks a little lost.
DIALOGUE
Thomas: Hi! You’re new, right? I saw you this morning in philosophy class – you seemed a bit… uh, how should I put it… lost?
Léa : Ah, hi! Yes, that’s it… I’ve just moved here from Marseille and honestly, this high school is huge! I’ve already gone to the wrong classroom three times this morning.
Thomas: Oh, really? From Marseille! Nice! I’m Thomas, by the way. And you?
Léa : Léa. Nice to meet you! You’re in the same class as me, right? In the final-year science stream?
Thomas : Exactly! So, what brings you to our beautiful Lyon region?
Léa : Well, my dad got transferred for work. We didn’t really have a choice, you know… And honestly, leaving all my friends in my final year isn’t ideal!
Thomas : I understand… It must be hard to start over. But hey, Lyon’s not so bad! And people are nice here.
Léa : I hope so! In any case, the teachers seem… uh… how to say… pretty strict?
Thomas : Haha! Have you noticed? Especially Mrs Dubois, the maths teacher. She’s formidable! But she’s just demanding. In the end, we progress quickly with her.
Léa : Ah darn! Maths isn’t really my strong suit… In Marseille, I had a really cool teacher who explained things well.
Thomas : Hey, if you want, I can give you my notes from the previous lessons? That might help you catch up.
Léa : Seriously? That would be great! But… uh… are you sure? We barely know each other…
Thomas : Yeah, no problem! We’re in the same boat with the bac coming up, right? We have to help each other.
Léa : That’s really kind of you! By the way, what’s your specialization?
Thomas : Maths and physics. And you?
Léa : Same here! Well, anyway… I’m trying! And after the bac, what do you want to do?
Thomas : Engineering school, if I get the grades… Otherwise, science faculty. And you?
Léa : I’m still torn between medicine and… Wait, who’s that girl over there staring at us weirdly?
Thomas : Uh… Which one? Oh! It’s Camille. Why?
Léa : She doesn’t seem to like me… She’s been staring at me for a while now with a rather unfriendly look.
Thomas : Ah… uh… Well, to be honest… Camille and I were… how to put it… close last year. But it’s over now!
Léa : Oh dear! I hope I won’t cause any trouble by talking to you!
Thomas : No! Don’t worry about that. Camille will get used to it. Can’t Camille and I still be friends?
Léa : Yes, of course! Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry…
Thomas : You’re not nosy at all! On the contrary, it’s only natural to ask questions. So, do you want me to show you around the high school? That way you won’t get lost anymore!
Léa : I’d love to! And maybe you could introduce me to some of the other people in the class?
Thomas : Of course! Hey, speaking of which, here come Marc and Julie. They’re super cool!
Léa : Perfect! I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about this new school year, but in the end…
Thomas : You’ll see, you’ll get used to it quickly! And if you have any questions or problems, don’t hesitate to ask me, okay?
Léa : Thank you so much, Thomas! It’s really kind of you to welcome me like that. I have a feeling this year might turn out well after all!
Thomas : I’m sure! Come on, I’ll show you where the library is. It’s the perfect place to study in peace!
