Negotiating the time of day with an “early bird” and a “night owl”

On pourrait y aller samedi, dès l’ouverture ?
Lucie : Mais enfin Thomas, pourquoi tu te couches si tard ?
Thomas : Attends, attends !
Thomas : Ben normal quoi !
Lucie : Euh, pratiquement oui ! À 6h30 je suis debout, à 7h je suis prête. C’est efficace !
Thomas : Tu me fais peur là… Bon, alors si on dit 11h, tu m’appelles à 9h30 maximum. Ça marche ?
Lucie : D’accord, marché conclu ! Mais… ah zut ! J’viens de me rappeler, samedi j’ai cours de yoga à 10h30…
Thomas : Ah ben bravo !
Thomas : Attends, dimanche matin…
Thomas : Chouette ! Bon ben à dimanche alors, ma petite marmotte matinale !
Lucie : À dimanche, mon cher oiseau de nuit !

Lucie, a student who is a morning person and always gets up at dawn, wants to organize an outing with her friend Thomas, a true night owl who hates getting up early. They try to find a time that suits their completely opposite daily rhythms so they can visit an exhibition together.

DIALOGUE

Lucie : Hey Thomas! Tell me, would you like to go see the Monet exhibition this weekend?
Thomas : Oh yeah, totally! I’ve heard about it, apparently it’s awesome. When were you thinking?
Lucie : Well, you know me, I’m more of a morning person. Could we go on Saturday at opening? Say 9 a.m., for example?
Thomas : Uh… 9 a.m. on a Saturday? You must be joking! At 9 on weekends I’m still snoring like a log!
Lucie : Come on, make an effort! It’s the best time, there are fewer people and the light is perfect for seeing the paintings.
Thomas : Lucie, you know very well that I’m not functional before noon on weekends. Last night I went to bed at 3 a.m.!
Lucie : Oh come on, Thomas, why do you go to bed so late? That’s not good for your health!
Thomas : Huh? But I was with some friends, we were watching movies… Time flies! Listen, can’t we go in the afternoon instead?
Lucie : The afternoon? But it’ll be packed! And besides, I start getting tired after 3 p.m.
Thomas : You’re tired at 3 p.m.? But that’s when I start to come alive! We’re really not compatible with each other!
Lucie : Yes, yes, we can find a compromise! How about 11 a.m.? It’s already a big effort for me to push it back…
Thomas : Mmh… 11 a.m… Well, listen, I can try to make an effort. But you have to call me to wake me up, okay!
Lucie : No problem! I’ll call you at 10 a.m. so you’ll have time to…
Thomas : Wait, wait! 10 a.m.? That only gives me an hour! I need at least an hour and a half to fully wake up.
Lucie : An hour and a half? But what do you do for all that time?
Thomas : Well, normal stuff! Shower, a relaxed breakfast, coffee… I’m not a robot! Do you bounce out of bed like a spring?
Lucie : Uh, pretty much! At 6:30 a.m. I’m up, by 7 a.m. I’m ready. It’s efficient!
Thomas : You’re scaring me… Okay, so if we say 11 a.m., you call me at 9:30 a.m. at the latest. Does that work?
Lucie : Okay, deal! But… oh no! I just remembered, on Saturday I have a yoga class at 10:30 a.m….
Thomas : Oh, great! See? We can’t go in the morning! What about Sunday, then?
Lucie : Sunday… yeah, why not. But on Sunday night I like to go to bed early so I can start the week feeling fresh.
Thomas : OK, so Sunday morning, same deal? Is 11 a.m. still good for you?
Lucie : Perfect! And this time, no yoga class getting in the way. I’ll call you at 9:30 a.m. sharp!
Thomas : Wait, Sunday morning… But there’s the championship final on Sunday night! I’ll probably go to bed even later than usual on Saturday night…
Lucie : Thomas! Are you doing that on purpose or what? Fine, last proposal: we go on Sunday at noon. Period!
Thomas : At noon? But that’s lunchtime! I’ll be starving!
Lucie : Well, we’ll eat after the visit! There’s a nice little restaurant just next to the museum.
Thomas : Mm… okay, but then we’ll take our time to eat, right? No rushed meals!
Lucie : Got it! So let’s recap: Sunday at noon in front of the museum. And you’ll be awake, I hope?
Thomas : I promise! You won’t be tired already?
Lucie : No, no, noon is still acceptable! Come on, let’s go for our cultural outing!
Thomas : Great! Alright, see you on Sunday then, my little morning sleepyhead!
Lucie : See you on Sunday, my dear night owl!
